RSP posts 9% growth in HR coils output

The Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) of Steel Authority of India Ltd has recorded nine per cent growth each in the production of hot rolled coils and galvanised sheets during the first quarter to June 30, 1999 compared to the corresponding period last year. According to RSP spokesperson, the plant achieved 189 per cent, 89 per cent, 82 per cent, 25 per cent and 17 per cent growth in production of tin plates, cold rolled sheets, cold rolled coils, spiral weld pipes, cold rolled non oriented (CRNO) steel and hot rolled plates respectively during the April-June this fiscal compared to the first three months of the last fiscal.

Assocham seminar on viable power plan

India's economic liberalisation efforts run the risk of being stymied if immediate steps are not initiated to implement a viable power plan to generate an additional 90,000 mw in the next ten years and triger a continuous cycle of improvements through new investments, product quality and fairpricing, according to the Assocham. The resources required to match the projected peak demand of 1.76 lakh mw up to 2011-12 are reckoned at Rs 4,00,000 crore. To formulate a time-bound, implementable programme of action, an Assocham- sponsored seminar, to be inaugurated by K C Pant, deputy chairman, Planning Commission on Thursday, will discuss the critical issues and impediments in the development of the power industry in India.

New gauge conversion rly line

Union home minister Lal Krishna Advani will lay the foundation stone for the gauge conversion of the Surendranagar-Bhavnagar-Dhola-Dhasa-Mahuva line with extension up to Pipavav from metre to broad gauge line on Thursday. The railway line is close to Pipavav and Jafrabad ports. It is also expected to cater to cement plants in the area. The main commodities moved in the area include salt, onion, deoiled cakes, limestones, chemicals.
