  Mamata kicks off poll drive
Trinamul Congress leader Mamata Banerjee kicked off her first election campaign in Calcutta yesterday, announcing 10 candidates for ensuing Lok Sabha elections, but without making public her reported move for poll tie-ups with the BJP.
  No headway in Akali-BJP seat sharing talks
The Akali Dal has staked claim to three Lok Sabha seats outside Punjab as its talks with the alliance partner Bharatiya Janata Party on the sharing of seats in Punjab remained inconclusive.

Whisked corporators vote in LC polls and vanish again
Polling for the two seats from the local self government bodies to the State Legislative Council yesterday went off without a hitch even as there was a mad scramble among various political parties to recheck their positions and ensure victory of their candidates. There are three candidates in the fray for two seats. Two are being contested by the Sena and one by the Samajwadi Party supported by the Congress and other sundry parties in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).
Rajan Pillai imbroglio surfaces anew
"Biscuit King" Rajan Pillai may be no more, but the controversy which had enveloped him until his death in custody in Delhi over two years ago, has been given a new lease of life in Singapore. The local authorities nabbed one of his former associates, Antony Joseph, at Changi Airport on Friday. And on Saturday, a district court here charged him with 22 counts of criminal breach of trust.

Kerala clears Enron project
The CPM-led LDF Government has cleared the entry of US-based multinational, Enron Power Energy Corporation Inc into Kerala. Enron will set up the Rs 1,500-crore 513-MW power project, promoted by K P P Nambiar of BPL group, in Kannur -- the only mega private power project in the state which secured fuel allocation.

Favourites Australia rode on a gritty 52 by skipper Belinda Clark to carve out a comfortable five-wicket victory over a spirited New Zealand and regain the women's cricket World Cup at the Eden Gardens in Calcutta yesterday. Chasing New Zealand's modest score of 164, the Australians seemed to be in no hurry at all as their middle order batswomen Michelle Goszko (37) and Karen Fruin (24) chipped in with useful contributions to overhaul the target, reaching 165 for five in 47.4 overs.
