Okerie, Bagan punished for "misconduct"

Saibal Bose
CALCUTTA, April 10: Chima Okerie, the man-of-the-tournament of the second Philips National League, will not be considered for any awards in the next edition of the coveted tournament. League champions Mohun Bagan have been fined Rs 50,000 for ``misconduct in National League and misbehavior during prize distribution''.

This decision was taken by the executive body of the All India Football Federation at its Calcutta meeting today. Nigerian Okerie has been penalised for showing disrespect towards the West Bengal governor Raghunath Reddy during the prize distribution ceremony for the National League after the Super Cup match on March 29.

Okerie and the rest of the Bagan players had walked off the field at the Salt Lake Stadium when the prizes were being distributed. Okerie appeared to receive his award from the governor only after repeated requests over the public address system. Even the other Bagan players took their time in coming out of the dressing room to receive their awards.Clarifying on the``misconduct'' angle, an AIFF spokesman said that Bagan had gathered the minimum number of ``fairplay'' points during the National League and had collected lot of yellow cards. Okerie is currently out of India and is set to turn out for Bagan in the next season also.
