Candy Brar is Miss North India

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
CHANDIGARH, Sept 19: There was glitz and glamour at the Chandigarh Press Club as large crowds had gathered at the venue for Mr and Miss India North 1999 contest. The audience had started pouring in much before the show actually started, an hour behind schedule, but people had patience and no regrets to witness the ramp coming alive on the grand evening that was to decide the best out of the total of 55 contestants which included 35 males and 20 females.

The stage was decked up for the show and the spirits soared high as Shivani and Pallab Bose, the hostess and host for the show, made an enthusiastic start by introducing the judges. The judges were Anil Puri, chief photo journalist with Punjab Kesari; Sunil Bansal, a photographer; Gautam Singla, a model; Ravi Mann, a fashion photographer; Vinod, a jeweller; Jaspreet Dhillon, a fashion designer; Vandana Sharma; Kiran Dua, a businessman and Rupinder Batth.

The show started with the ethnic wear round and the 35 male models made the appearance first in designer wear. It was followed by a similar round for females who displayed exquisitely designed traditional clothes.

This was followed by the physique round in which 25 macho men and shortlised girls took to the stage. The girls were clad in short fluorescent dresses which added colour to the show. On the basis of this round 17 male finalists were shortlisted who were asked the common question -- What according to them made Chandigarh a City Beautiful? Most of them could not give a satisfactory answer and many gave the audience a reason to have a hearty laugh. One of them even described Chandigarh as the most beautiful "country". In the same round for the females, 12 of them were shortlisted and were asked -- Why were they taking part in the contest? All of them managed to tackle the query well and won a large applause from the audience.

The final round had eight males and females vying for the title and all of them were asked different questions. Though all tried to give their best but many failed to impress the audience with their baseless answers but again the girls faired better as compared to the boys. The show was organised by Fashion Revealers Event Management Company.

Mr India North 1999 title went to Vikas Mittal, the first runner up was Rajan Gulati while the second runners up was Vicky Khanna. In the female category the Miss North India title went to Candy Brar while the first runners up was Khushboo Kochhar and the second runners up was Naina Rana.
