Church should take steps to arrest spread of AIDS
PRESS TRUST OF INDIA

THRISSUR, NOV 20: The Church should play an important role in creating awareness among the people about AIDS in order to prevent its spread, Mar Timotheus, Metropolitan and Patriarchal Delegate to India, has said.

It was high time the different denominations of Churches in India should create an awareness about AIDS to avoid the `impending mass deaths' due to the expected spread of the disease in the years to come, he said.

Presiding over the 60th birthday celebrations of Maraprem, Metropolitan of the Chaldean Syrian Church of the East (CSCE) in India headquartered here yesterday, Timotheus said the rate of escalation of AIDS in the US had declined considerably in the past three years following intensive awareness campaign initiated at various levels.

Hence, the church should come forward to make the people aware of the disease even in the grass root level to avoid escalation of the disease in the country, he added.

Inaugurating the function, Thrissur Mayor Jose Kattukaran lauded Mar Aprem's contributions for the growth and development of the CSCE especially in uniting the warring groups of faithful.

Besides being a good orator and humourist, Aprem, who was consecrated the Metropolitan of India in 1968 at the age of 28, had authored 60 books on a variety of subjects. He had also bagged the `Men of Achievement' award presented by the International Biological Centre, England, and `Medal of Merit' given by the Coptic Orthodox Church Centre.

Aprem, formerly George Mookan, was ordained Deacon in 1961 and a priest in 1965. He was also actively associated with several social organisations in the country and abroad aiming at the uplift of the weaker sections of the society.
