A 12-year-old girl from Panvel and and her younger brother were found dead at Kasara Ghat along the Mumbai-Nashk highway on Tuesday morning. An Automated Teller Machine (ATM) card found in the girl’s pocket enabled the police to identify them within 12 hours.

According to Kasara police, some pilgrims returning to Mumbai from Shirdi saw the bodies of Janhvi Shah (12) and her brother Parag (10) lying alongside the highway near Latifwadi village and called police control room. Janhvi was wearing a red top and blue jeans, and Parag a striped t-shirt and jeans.

“We found an ATM card in Janhvi’s pocket along with a receipt for cash withdrawal. We contacted the bank that had issued the card and found it had been issued in the name of Nitin Shah. We obtained his contact details from the bank and contacted him, and he confirmed they were his children,” said assistant police inspector Vilas Shende of Kasara police station.

Preliminary medical examination revealed strangulation marks around throats of Janhvi and Parag.

The bodies were first sent to Thane civil hospital for post-mortem examination and then taken to JJ Hospital in Byculla on Tuesday night.

“We are waiting for post-mortem reports that will let us know the exact cause of death. Shah is grief-stricken and in no condition to give a statement at this point. The children’s uncle will soon be coming to the police station to give an initial statement,” Shende added late on Tuesday night.
