Surat Even as Narendra Modi took oath as the chief minister for the fourth term on Wednesday, two of his namesakes were watching the swearing-in ceremony live.

While one of them, Narendra Thakorbhai Modi (53), is a head constable in Surat police, the other, Narendra Atmaram Modi, is a history-sheeter who has been arrested in the past for bootlegging and gambling.

On Wednesday, Modi the constable was glued to his TV set. In police for the last 30 years, Modi is at present deployed as guard at Union Bank of India’s Station Road branch.

He was even deputed in police bandobast for the CM’s public meeting in Surat.

“Once I got a chance to meet Narendra Modi (Chief Minister). I was posted outside the house of late Kashiram Rana when he was an MP. The CM had come to meet Rana. After greeting the chief minister, Rana introduced me to him. I gave a salute and the CM smiled. The name has earned me great respect from colleagues,” Modi says. His wife says she is proud of “her Modi who is the chief minister of our home”.

Narendra Atmaram Modi, on the other hand, is a notorious gambler from Tarsadi village in Mangrol taluka of Surat district. His is a familiar name for Kosamba police, which had arrested him in prohibition and gambling cases.

A father of two kids, this Modi is also fond of the chief minister. “I never got a chance to meet him (the CM) personally, but my wishes are with him. Seeing his working style, I wish he becomes the prime minister of India one day,” he says before disconnecting the phone.
