The incident happened in the afternoon in Sector 8, Panchkula, when Raveena Lal was driving the car and the boy came under it. The incident triggered protests by the parents and relatives of the boy, who has been identified as Sunny, of Rajiv colony.
The boy’s wailing mother and other relatives sat on a protest inside Sector-5 police station for hours and only after the police assured them action in the matter that they went to the government hospital in Sector 6, and took away the body for last rites.
Station House Officer, Sector 5, Panchkula, Ajay Singh said, “We have booked the woman for negligent driving. The case has been registered under sections 279 and 304 of the IPC.”
According to police officers, three boys were crossing the road around 1 pm, and one of them came under the vehicle. His neck was broken due to the incident. The boy bore injury marks on his limbs and head.
A team from the Haryana Forensic Science Laboratory visited the accident site and the police station, and took photographs of the Fiat car (HR 280001). The number plate of the car and its bonnet were dented and bloodmarks were found on the lower side of the car. Fearing that the vehicle might be damaged, the police had removed its number plate from the back before parking it at the police station.
The woman was arrested after the police received information about the accident from one of their security agents. According to police officers, after knocking down the boy, the woman stopped some distance away from the spot when she was hailed by people on seeing the boy lying dead. The woman subsequently shifted the boy to the local hospital where he was declared dead on arrival.
However, the woman told the police that she did not realise that the boy had died and had no idea that he came under her vehicle.
The victim’s grandfather, Jai Singh, said they wanted justice. “We should be compensated,” he said, adding that the father of the deceased boy was poor and worked as a contract labourer.
