Lucknow Samajwadi Party’s Maharashtra unit president Abu Asim Azmi, who had alleged that Muslims were not safe under the SP rule in UP after he was denied permission to visit riot-affected Faizabad earlier this month, on Wednesday expressed satisfaction with the steps taken by the state government after a meeting with Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav.

“Akhilesh had called me and every issue was discussed. He explained the steps taken for the well-being of Muslims. I am convinced about his concern for the community, his intentions are clear,” said Azmi.

When reminded of his previous statement, Azmi replied: “I am satisfied after the discussion with the CM, but that does not absolve the government from the communal violence that took place. I will continue to raise my voice and point out shortcomings in future.”

“He assured me that he is very particular about communal riots and these will be stopped at any cost. He is making sincere efforts and I have full faith in him,” Azmi added.

Azmi said Akhilesh had informed him about the various relief measures undertaken for Muslims affected in the riots. “He apprised me that he had already cancelled the licence of the fair price shop dealer who was involved in the arson in Asthan village of Pratapgarh in June, as demanded by the local Muslims. The Gangster Act slapped on four Muslims will also be revoked,” Azmi said.

As for the Faizabad violence, Azmi said the Chief Minister had assured full compensation to those who suffered losses in the arson.

Azmi said Akhilesh also informed him about the “budgetary allocation for Muslims and various welfare schemes for them”.
