Ghaziabad Nearly 100 people blocked NH-24 on Tuesday morning, after a statue of Dr B R Ambedkar was found desecrated and displaced from its spot in Ghaziabad’s Siddharth Nagar area.

After officials of the district administration and police were informed about the incident, another Ambedkar statue was installed in its place immediately.

Police said while investigations were on, no case has been registered so far.

Praveen Kumar, a local resident who filed the complaint at the Vijay Nagar police station, said, “The statue was there when I returned home last night around 9.30 pm. At 5 am, I was told by others that it had been damaged. The left shoulder and the left foot of the statue had been chipped away, probably using a hammer. It was removed from its stand and thrown into a ditch. Police were called and officer assured us that they would investigate the matter in detail.”

Officials of the local administration said the incident had been noted and the damaged statue was replaced in an hour after the complaint was filed.

“There was an statue of Ambedkar which was meant to be installed in Mata Rani Park nearby. This statue has been placed here for the time being,” officials said.

Police said while investigations were on, no case has been registered so far.

“The statue was close to NH-24, on the construction site for the Noida Extension-Ghaziabad Link Road. A letter had been sent by the local authorities to shift the statue to another location as the construction activity was weakening its foundation. It is possible that the statue fell because of this. However, looking at the damage on the statue, we are not ruling out foul play yet,” a police officer said.
