As Mamata exits, Mulayam spells it out: We'll support UPA

Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav says his party will support UPA government to keep communal forces away.

New Delhi In a big relief to Congress on a day Trinamool Congress pulls out of UPA, Samajwadi Party today pledged to continue support to the government as it "does not want to let communal forces to come to power".

"Our support is clear. We will not let communal forces come to power. That is why I am supporting. I am not in UPA. But we are supporting so that communal forces do not go ahead," he told reporters.

Yadav's statement has come as a big relief to the UPA, whose support in the Lok Sabha came down from 273 to 254 after Trinamool decided to pull out of the government and withdraw its support.

With the outside support of SP (22) and BSP (21), the coalition will continue to have the backing of over 300 MPs in the 545-member Lok Sabha. For a simple majority, government needs the support of at least 273 MPs.

Answering a question on whether SP will be withdrawing support to UPA, Yadav said, "why will we take the support back? We have to keep communal forces away from power. But we are not in UPA."

His remarks came a day after he shared dais with leaders of Left, JD(S), BJD and TDP at an anti-government protest during a nationwide bandh against FDI in retail and hike in diesel prices. However, he refused to share the stage with BJP leaders at a nearby protest venue where Left leaders Sitaram Yechury and A B Bardhan were also present.

Asked if he was in favour of mid-term elections, Yadav shot back, "where is the question of mid-term polls? Ask Congress about this, what they want and whether they want it or (they want to) run the government."

When suggested that it is said he will be responsible if mid-term poll takes place, Yadav said, "it does not depend on us. This is government's responsibility."

Questioned whether the government is in minority, he said it will be clear in the Lok Sabha.

Asked about government issuing notification of FDI soon after the protests, he said his job is to inform people and his party was not with UPA on this.

"We will keep opposing FDI and diesel price hike. We will oppose this in Lok Sabha also as it will hurt five crore people in the country," he said.

Yadav said it was "meaningless talk" when asked whether his party will join the central government.

To a question when will his party take a final decision on the issue of support, he said their meetings keep happening and they keep discussing national issues. "We take decisions and follow it. We are already supporting the UPA," he said.

When pointed out that a senior CPI(M) leader has suggested that he lead the Third Front, he said such a front will be formed only after next elections.

He said the leader of such a front will be decided later.

Asked whether he was in touch with Congress leaders, he said, "we are talking to all the parties."

To a question whether UPA is in trouble or not, he shot back, "please put this question to the Prime Minister. This is not my job."

Psedo-secular Mulayam by kewal krishan on 22 Sep 2012

How can Mulayam talk of Secularism when he goes all out to please only Muslims? Congress to whom he supports, can also not be described as secular as congress killed thousands of Sikhs in 1984 and always seeks alliance wish communal party MUSLIM LEAGUE. Mulayam cannot be termed as trust worthy as has betrayed the Nation on several occasions. recently he has also betrayed Mamta.why he is not being shown his true image by media is also suspicious in nature.

Congress created this situation by Dr.Srinivasan on 21 Sep 2012

Long long ago the British took the cotton from India and spun it at Manchester and sold the same to India at hefty profits!!!!! One of the reasons why we burnt them !!!!! Congress party was the one which championed the cause of Indians . Over the decades much water has flown down the bridge --- congress is instrumental in bringing the same FDI in another form .Ishwar ki leela hai na? All the good people and honest ones have left congress leaving it with corrupt ones .Congress should introspect. Is Mulayam a better alternative for Mamata who is non corrupt and straight forward. Does the nation need all corrupt ones as leaders? We had earlier warned MMS not to take in tainted people he ignored them .

The name of the game is treachery by An Indian on 21 Sep 2012

This is an eye opener to Left parties, AIADMK,BJD and likes. Believe Mulayam, you will be conveniently stabbed from back. See the tall leader of UP. The next PM could be Mulayam's wife, another candidate from Mulayam's family, who is neither an MLA or MP now. Mayavathi is another case.Shameless

BJP can tie the bell by Body_Of_Truth on 21 Sep 2012

BJP should handover UP to leaders like UmaBharti and Varun Gandhi and then they can seek for their lost glory in UP. When a commong men can understand this fact then why these so called political pundits of BJP are ignoring this fact. Sometime, it is better to let go things from your hand for your own benefit. IF they win UP they will be able to form gov or else they will have rely on Mulayam singh, Mayawati, shibusuren etc.... I really wish BJP wakes up and does right thing. Let Narendra modi rule this country for 5 years and we all will witness the turnarouns of Indian economy.

Imperialism and Coloniasm is coming to India again through FDI by Wlfred Tanti - Prospective Slave on 21 Sep 2012

As per various media reports, the Congress party looted the country and earned more than 5 lakhs crore through the 2G,Coalgate scam and many other scams. In addition to money power they have the key ally like govt machineries. In the UPA-2, perhaps TMC was the only party clean from any corruption charges for which they failed to stay with the corrupt alliance. So long, CBI and money power is there, there is no threat for UPA-2. The FDI will also huge generate black money for the ruling alliance, which will be helpful in 2014 general election and post election horse trading. Congress will never like to see Mulayam as PM. Secularism is the costliest thing in India and billion dollars scams can be coverd up with the power of secularism. Poverty, price hike, inflation can also be defeated with the weapon of secularism. Killing of 3000 sikhs in the hearth of Delhi is also a good example of secular act.History repeats itself - Imperialism and Coloniasm is coming to India again through FDI.

Mulayam as PM by G.Dwarakanath on 21 Sep 2012

Iam fully supporting the fact that Shri Mulaayam will not be PM as he lacks abilty to rule this vast country. He is a secularist due to political situation in UP as it may help him to catch minority votes. Now there is one alternative to him to train his son in politics as he seems to be having leadership qualities.

Who Dares will not Win by AS on 21 Sep 2012

It was expected from Mulayam , same is expected from other opportunist leaders like Mayawati , Every party knows that congress will not not come in power , so they are indirectly targeting BJP.

Who dares..... by Deepak Gupta on 21 Sep 2012

There is a difference between the "dare" & the "bare". Why Mulayam will withdraw support & bare himself. He knows that govt. won't fall even after his withdrawal. So why to shoot in the foot!!! He is wisely doing tom-tom so that he can take the credit in future elections saying that....look I had supported secular formation to keep this country out of communal hands. And one more thing.... Congress has more than anybody chance of remain in power after next elections....

Very Sad by Nargis on 21 Sep 2012

Do not play communal politics in it. U are cheating each community I will pray to Allah that in next election you will loss every seat

Honesty by Honesty on 21 Sep 2012

Like someone said, "Honesty is really expensive and dont expect it from cheap people" (like the ministers of UPA and mulayam)

Congress and Mulayum by Ramanasree on 21 Sep 2012

Really it is a big relief at this stage for the UPA and the nation; otherwise the UPA and the country would have landed in chaos. But after the incident the congress party should learn that it should know the reality that it does not have majority and needs to satisfy the ally partners before taking the decisions. It can not absolve from the responsibility of convincing the partners as a big brother and necessary manaa naa hai meaning make them to accept. Just like that Anand Sharma telling thrice I talked to her is not sufficient. Congress should not make their supporters to be outside. It has to bring them on board and make everybody a partner of the show and decision. Hope congress will improve their relations with its allies and continue the remaining two years of rule.

ANTY HINDUS by Sasi on 21 Sep 2012

As the BJP is portrayed as pro-Hindu (nationalist) political party, all pseudo secular parties are blaming is as anti minorities/communal. Instead of calling these parties as pseudo secular, the BJP must call them as ANTY-Hindus/National.

MULAYAM´S REAL GAME TO SUPPORT CORRUPTION OF UPA TO CONTINUE by SKonikkara on 21 Sep 2012

The people has no power or privileges after electing the greedy for power and money. Once the people given away the licence to govern, then people has no more power to subvert the govt or parliament which has been elected by them. Such a democracy prevailing since the British era must be changed. More to add the law and order should also be innovated time to time as the world and the Indian generation moves. It would be noticed to change the democratical law and system in the next gen election under which the people should have the power of change the govt., in such a critical juncture of now.As far as Mulayam and India concerned, he is open supporting the corruption of UPA and its uncleared scams with prerogative privileges for not prosecuting such organized crimes.

Nothing new by CA Pawan Kumar Sharma on 21 Sep 2012

Mulayam's greedy gimmicks to remain relevant. A known fact, he and his party has no ethics/morals. Only to fulfill self goal through back door transactions with the ruling alliance. He is least concerned for poor people. Neither diesel/LPG nor FDI is any issue for him. He wants big pie in the nation's loot, which he knows how to extract throgh arms twisting.

Mulayam the prophet of Secularisam by G.Dwarakanath on 21 Sep 2012

He is seems to be without any direction and planning as he do something and speaks in opposit. He is using religion as a source to divide the nation as his party is more dangerous than Congress. The problem in our people is that they are too silent to response.
