Asaram Bapu calls critics 'barking dogs', adds to gangraped girl's humiliation, then 'apologises'

New Delhi Day after letting loose extremely derogatory remarks against Delhi gangraped victim who died after days of waging a courageous fight against the horrific injuries she suffered during the crime, Asaram Bapu ratcheted up his insensitive tirade against her by refusing to apologise and in fact went much further to call all critics and the media 'barking dogs' for raising a controversy over his 'innocuous' comments.

At a rally where hundreds of his supporters were gathered, Asaram Bapu said that when an 'elephant walks (gestures at himself), first one dog starts barking, then others around him and finally the whole neighborhood's dogs join in the bedlam. They thereby benefit by getting some attention themselves. Now, if the elephant runs behind the dogs, then their (dogs) value increases and that of the elephant comes down'.

"They can say what they like. I don't care. I still maintain why should I run behind the dogs," Asaram added.

Asaram Bapu holds girl responsible for Delhi gangrape, says 'spare' the rapists, slams media

Asaram was at the centre of a controversy yesterday after he suggested that the 23-year-old gangrape victim was equally responsible for the ghastly crime and said the girl could have called her assailants brothers and begged them to stop.

"Now what did I say wrong. A man approached me and said my wife fights with me. So I said you can't clap with one hand. So what's wrong with that. Now, this comment was joined with another comment," he said trying to underplay the controversy.

"Does an elephant give importance to dogs by reacting?" he said, adding, "let people infer what they want."

Asaram later told reporters his remarks about the gangrape victim were misconstrued by his critics and the media.

The spiritual leader claimed if his speech was understood in the proper context people would be respecting him for his comments in the Delhi gangrape case.

Asaram said through the years he has achieved a high status and commanded respect in society as a result of which he had attracted many critics.

Asaram also said he did not intend to harm anybody and that he wished the well-being of all.

Asaram Bapu does not apologise, but says did not denigrate gangraped girl

Pandharpur-Jammu-New Delhi: Spiritual leader Asaram Bapu on Tuesday downplayed his remark against the Delhi gangrape victim, and claimed that the media had distorted his statement.

"What can I do if somebody telecast my statements after distorting it? I heard (the media saying) it will be filled with admiration for you (media) if you telecast my 15 minutes discourse. I don't want to get into this controversy," he told the media in Pandharpur.

He went on to say ask as to how can he say bad things about a girl who met such a sad end, that it was not her fault, that she was the one who was wronged.

In a queer manner of revoking his words, Asaram said that he would 'apologise a thousand times' if there was a valid reason for doing so, but since there were none, 'what can be done'.

Meanwhile, Congress leader Karan Singh termed Asaram Bapu''s remark as unfortunate.

"The real meaning of the word 'guru' (spiritual leader) is one, who dispels darkness. You can judge by yourself whether he is spreading darkness or dispelling it. Every 'guru' is not bad. There are good gurus also. Such comments like the one by Asaram Bapu are unfortunate," he told the media in Jammu.

National Commission for Women (NCW) chairperson Mamata Sharma on her part said that the spiritual leader''s comments were insensitive toward girls.

"The comments that have been made are insensitive toward girls of the country. The people of this country are already agitated after such a heinous crime," she told the media in New Delhi.

Asaram Bapu earlier landed himself in a controversy over his remark that the December 16 Delhi gang rape victim was as guilty as those responsible for the barbaric sexual assault on her.

"Only 5-6 people are not the culprits. The victim daughter is as guilty as her rapists... She should have called the culprits brothers and begged before them to stop... This could have saved her dignity and life. Can one hand clap? I don''t think so," he said.

The self-proclaimed godman further said that he is against harsher punishments for the accused, as the law could be misutilised.

"We have often seen such laws are made to be misutilised... Dowry harassment law is the biggest example," he said.

The spiritual guru''s remark comes at a time when the entire nation is mourning the death of the 23-year-old brave heart who died in a Singapore hospital 13 days later after the heinous crime.

The victim, a physiotherapy student, was brutally raped and assaulted in a moving bus on the night of December 16, 2012. She died of her injuries on December 29, 2012 in the multi-specialty Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore.

Her male friend, who was accompanying her that day, was also assaulted by the accused and both of them were thrown out of the bus.

Distracted from the real issue at hand by Megha on 12 Jan 2013

These comments are absurd. Instead of focusing on the issue at hand, we're arguing about what Asaram Bapu said. The real issue is the safety of women and justice for the girl who passed away before her time. At the end of the day, these news channels are putting the girls family in more pain than they already are in. GO OUT THERE AND FIGHT FOR JUSTICE. We do not need to divert our attentions to things that are being said. Those things do not matter. At the moment the only thing that matters is that we get justice for this girl as soon as possible. Women cannot be subjected to such horror. Sexual Assault and abuse is the biggest violation to any women. Let's fight to end the ABUSE and stop fighting about issues ("Barking Dogs") that hold absolutely no importance in our lives. Remember ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. Let's fight to make India a better and safer place for women to live in. R.I.P to the beautiful girl who lost her life to a heinous crime. To the accusers may your soul rot in HELLL!!

Followers of Asaram Bapu persuade young people to come and listen to asaram and then get them hooked to involve themselves with their ashram activities. Once these people gets a little involved they are told to visit ashram once a month, once you go once a month you are persuaded to visit ashram once a week, then every day , then at the end they teach you the world is no good your life will be saved if you live in ashram as sewadaar and serve ashram needs for the betterment of your ancestors. Hindus people are so religious that they fall in the trap of anything in the name of religion even the asaram bapu scam. by the time these people realize what happened to them they have already lost their money to asaram , as gift, given up their family, career and everything what a person lives for so they can serve asaram bapu. Asaram Bapu inner circle of people who were once fresher then recruit more people and then they recruit more, and this is why asaram bapu today has millions of followers as fanatics. I have had a nice conversation with one of the follower of asaram bapu for about 2 hours, and i realized there is no difference in naxals fanaticism, or sharp shooters who work for gangs, or terrorist, or Palestinian who kills themselves as human bomb in the name of religion. Fanaticism is something they are good at and they have manipulated emotional, vulnerable people to come and join their group and then use them to advance their organization. Followers or sadaks are made to belive they are serving god while serving fraudsters asaram bapu. Asaram bapu was kicked out from the Saint's ashram where he was once involved. Because his guru was a nice human being he was preaching spirituality for the betterment of human being and society but asaram bapu started calling himself as god in his ashram and was involved in funds missing. Asaram realized he could make this a business and just by speaking in front of public some religious shaloks and scripts form gita or other religious books , people will follow him as their leader he did what any one else would have done, he saw it as na opportunity and made it a business, then he needed some people to promote him so he started recruiting young kids in the range of 18-25 who were a little depressed , he used religious talks and successfully manipulated hundreds of kids to join his group. from 1991-1996 there were hundreds of parents used to come to his ashram with a story that asaram has taken their kid but asaram was smart he only manipulated people who were over 18 and have them speak that they left their parent at their own will. Asaram bapu

Humiliation? by Tilottama on 10 Jan 2013

It's one thing to constantly cover someone who is making senseless statements but how can you be holier-than-thou when you talk of the "gang-raped girl's humiliation" Indian Express? I see no ideological difference between you and this baba person!

Moral and Ethical responsibility of the Media by Vineet Kohli on 10 Jan 2013

The media ought to have shown the complete sermon related to the victim instead of showing half and distorted facts to the public. The saint prayed for the departed soul peace and even offered support to the victims family. It is immoral and unethical on part of the media to conceal the positive side of the comments.

Enough.. by Shagun on 10 Jan 2013

Well, Okay. That was too much for someone's statement. Asaram bapu is a part of democracy. His statement cannot be used by media as BREAKING NEWS. For all the comments I have read, I suppose that no one believes in him. And this is for the mediapersons. If you have to give coverage, give fully. I myself have watched his whole statements and they do not definately potray what you are potraying. Do not act as fire breakers - act as torch bearers...

Send Asaram Bapu to Pluto by Osman Karolia on 10 Jan 2013

I will do my bit to ensure the legacy of Jyoti Singh lives for a long time so that her death is not in vain. Asaram Bapu is a cheap coward attempting to gain attention through the suffering of Jyoti, it is precisely because of this type of attitude that these crimes take place! Rip Jyoti and Asaram you should be sent to Pluto as this world has no room for people with your barbaric attitude! Shame on you for using her death to get some attention

Scumbag asaram by Vini on 10 Jan 2013

When a 6 month old child or 2 year old little girl is raped by her father, brother, uncle ... She must beg them not to rape her and remind them how they are related to her. This will definitely stop the brutality.. as these fithy swines will suddenly become sane human beings. Asaram you and your kind who cheat gullible humans into believing in your vile and disgusting preachings are the scum of this earth and fall into the same category of rapists and murderers.

Scumbag Asaram by Pankaj Naik on 10 Jan 2013

Very true Sir, I have observed that all political and so called spiritual factions are just flaunting their own political agenda. None of these scum bags care for justice!!

FOCUS ON CORE ISSUE DONOT DIVERT INTO SUBJECTIVITY by pravin on 10 Jan 2013

RAPES ARE STILL HAPPENING IN INDIA, NATIONAL ANGER ON LAPSE OF GOVT ADMINISTRATION TO PREVENT THE SAME IS BEING DIVERTED ON SUBJECTIVE DISCUSSIONS. THERE COULD BE MANY MULTI-FOLD APPROACH TO SURVIVE A RAPE ASSAULT SOME BASED ON AGGRESSION, DIPLOMATIC APPROACH, DEFENSIVE ETC BASED ON SITUATION AND STAGE OF THE ATTACK. SOLUTION NEEDS TO BE COMPREHENSIVE OF MULTIPLE SOLUTIONS BASED ON SCIENTIFIC APPROACH, IT MAY BE PENAL LAWS, CRIME PREVENTION ACTIONS, CRIMINAL MINDSET, SOCIAL AWARENESS, MORAL EDUCATION, LIFESTYLE, SELF DEFENCE ETC. IT IS SAD THAT WE ARE LOOSING FOCUS ON THE CORE ISSUE OF NATIONAL SHAME AND DISCUSSING STATEMENTS RATHER THAN EVOLUTION OF CONCRETE SCIENTIFIC SOLUTION FROM GOVERNMENT AND APPROACH TO STOP THE CRIME IMMEDIATELY.

Asaram Bapu are you sure you speak the right words to say that the victim should recite a mantra to save herself. Why did you not say that the victim's boyfriend is just as guilty as her that he should also recite the mantra to save himself from being beaten up and also prevent those devils from raping the victim. Just because her boyfriend is alive and she is not you could just blurt these stupid remarks. Please read more about mantras and don't misuse the word "mantras" to make yourself look as though you are a religious man with the right teachings.

When India's heyday of independence couldnot inspire and resist Nathuram Godse to kill Mahatma Gandhi, how can we expect Asharam Bapu's verdict would have worked,if implemented by Nirbhay?

Has he gone mad or purely eccentric???he den must b changed to a girl, thrown in front of those barbarians...just 2 watch, how he comes out of dat gruesome situation only by mantras nd pleading...if he is suddenly surrounded by goons, will his mantras hlp him 2 save his life???or will the goons listen 2 his "abla" nd "bhai" speech..This type of screwd media frenzy ppl must b changd 2 a girl nd must b thrown in front of rapists...let the show bgin...total bulshit speakr...

WILL WE EVER LEARN??? by unni on 09 Jan 2013

No way that girl could have come out alive that night, no mantras no prayers could have saved the girl. The law of land being vulnerable has lead to these events.Believing in god/ religion should not make a person blind...Mind you people were blind and unconscious before and not any more. They have started to respond and react to such atrocities.....

He is not the only one.. ! by Shashikant on 09 Jan 2013

There are many fake and fraud gurus like this they are good bussines men. They use common people's beliefs and play with them. They servive by us and must be eliminated by us only. Every youth must prevent his/her sister, mother, father, brother, wife huband, sons, daughters from falling for these scavengers.

Nirasaram by Ajay Kumar on 09 Jan 2013

Asaram is a cunning fox, you are a fool. Because of people like you such demons flourish in our country. I doubt, if the person claiming being saved through spirituality, is really a woman. Shame on you.
