Lucknow, April 14 For the first time in the last several years, Ram Navami was celebrated in Ayodhya without any untoward incident. About ten lakh Hindu devotees took holy dip in the river Saryu on Monday and paid darshan to temples. Displaying religious harmony, local Muslims offered a helping hand to Hindu devotees.

Haji Asad Ahmad, the corporator of Ayodhya city board said, “We made arrangements for drinking water and first aid medicines at various places of the city to help devotees.” Aqeel Ahmad, a Muslim youth who was distributing packets of drinking water to devotees said, “These Hindu devotees who come to Ayodhya to celebrate Ram Navami are like my personal guests. I try to serve them to all possible extent”. “There was no untoward incident today. We had made all possible arrangements to ensure the security of devotees”, said SSP Faizabad RKS Rathore. Some rumors were spread by a section of media that extremists may attack this Ram Navami Mela, but it has been completed peacefully, he said.

In-charge of Mela security, SP city G.N. Khanna said, “We were alert because we had to receive more than ten lakh pilgrims in the biggest gathering of Hindu pilgrims here.” The security cordon extended to more than 200 km up to the Nepal border, Khanna said.

The birthday of Lord Rama is celebrated on the ninth day of waxing moon in the moth of Chaitra. At midday, when Lord Rama is supposed to have been born, a special prayer was performed today. Rathyatras of Ram, Seeta, Lakshman and Hanuman were held from many temples.
