BJP backs Gadkari after ‘clean chit’, but cracks remain

New Delhi For the second time in less than two weeks, the top brass of the BJP backed beleaguered party president Nitin Gadkari Tuesday and said they had accepted an internal audit that cleared him of any wrongdoing in business, keeping alive his hopes of a second term in the post.

But this time, the vote of confidence was not unanimous as some influential leaders, including veteran L K Advani, did not appear to endorse Gadkari, who was also faced with fresh dissent.

Gadkari secured the backing of his party leaders at a meeting during which RSS ideologue S Gurumurthy presented an internal audit which cleared Gadkari of any “legal and moral wrongdoing” in the business dealings of a firm linked to him. Gadkari, however, was not present at the meeting as he was the subject of discussion.

“The meeting accepted the presentation of Shri Gurumurthy that there was no legal or moral wrongdoing by Nitin Gadkari,” BJP deputy leader in the Rajya Sabha, Ravi Shankar Prasad, said. The meeting was attended by members of the party’s core group and general secretaries.

Based on Gurumurthy’s findings, the party asserted that “Gadkari has no direct or indirect interest in the 18 investment companies which have invested in the Purti group”. Party sources, however, said it now depends on Gadkari’s ability to check the dissent against him to manage a second term as Tuesday’s meeting cleared him of moral and political compulsions.

“When we express our party’s trust on the issue of his integrity, he becomes eligible for a second term. When we have no problem today, how can we object tomorrow? After today’s declaration he is not handicapped by this issue. He has been unshackled by the recent allegations and becomes free to bid for a second term as he was free before this controversy erupted,” said a leader present at the meeting.

Yet, Gadkari is likely to find the going tough as BJP leaders evaded giving a direct reply when asked if Advani endorsed the declaration. Advani skipped the party meeting even though he was in the capital. “We do not know what his mood is,” said another senior leader.

Prasad, who read out the joint statement issued by Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley after the meeting, only said that Advani was not present because Gurumurthy had met him earlier in the day and explained the facts of the case.

Tuesday’s meeting was called after criticism from the party’s Rajya Sabha MP Ram Jethmalani, who claimed to have the support of senior leaders Yashwant Sinha and Jaswant Singh. This in turn had the blessings of Advani, some party leaders claimed.

In what appeared like a pre-emptive move, a party resolution appealed to all its leaders and workers to desist from airing their views on this issue as it can “hurt the image of the party”.

On his part, Gadkari treaded cautiously Tuesday to avoid ruffling any more feathers. He called on Swaraj and Jaitley at their houses to personally explain his case. Later in the afternoon, he also issued a press statement to “regret” his remarks that appeared equating Swami Vivekananda with underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, hoping to soothe tempers in the Sangh Parivar that found his comparison in bad taste.

Gadkari’s moves came after Jethmalani mounted fresh pressure against him saying that he, along with Jaswant Singh, Yashwant Sinha and Shatrughan Sinha, felt that “resignation of the party president is imminently called for” in the wake of the controversy surrounding his business deals. He also said he had written a letter to Advani pressing his demand and suggested that they even contemplated resigning from the party.

Gurumurthy, in this context, met Jethmalani to share his findings over the allegations after which the disgruntled leader asked him for supporting documents to be satisfied.

Gurumurthy, in his presentation, is learnt to have made three broad points that suggested the alleged 18 shell companies invested in Purti group “do not belong” to Gadkari and were also not fictitious because they have been in existence before. Gurumurthy is learnt to have said these companies belonged to a Nagpur company. As for the presence of Gadkari’s personal aides on the boards of these companies, the party was told that they were made directors as a “personal guarantee” for the loans these companies secured for investing in Purti group.

Gadkari a Liability by pRADEEP on 07 Nov 2012

Gadkari is a liability for BJP. If they are willing to carry him forward, it clearly shows the party's share of his ill doing. They have to back him as his investment of ill gotten money is beneficial to BJP

Missed Opportunity by Varin on 07 Nov 2012

Whether Mr.Gadkari is involved in any wrong doing or not, that will come out eventually. But at this time BJP has missed an opportunity to nail the congress which is neck deep in corruption. How BJP can expose Congress when they themselves stand on the same padestal. Gadkari's offering himself for any probe followed by resigning from the presidentship would have enhanced BJP's image in the eyes of the public but unfortunately BJP has missed the golden opportunity. Nevertheless if BJP has decided to Commit HARAKIRI, who can stop it.

Gadkari must go by A.R.VENKAT on 07 Nov 2012

That the one who was criticising Congress has found the same boomerang on him also. But what is peculiar is that Mr Jaitley who has many cases in his hands is now supporting in expectation of an long drawn case and money spinning. Also Sushma has plenty of money through Reddy brothers so she can crackle now. Also this joker Gurumurthy-does he know any calculations- how can he certify Gadkari's comapniies unless he is having an annual salary from there for CONSULTATIONS.Just as Ram Jethmalani did and now Advani moving away they all should move away but another joker has taken sanyaas -Modi of Gujarat who is silent. Also Yedi of Karnataka who has been fighting has become victorious but silent-like King Ashoka.Let us rid India of all these fascist partymen once for all.

BJP backs Gadkari after ‘clean chit’, but cracks remain by abbas ali on 07 Nov 2012

The BJP is already in the category of just another corrupt party. They want to close the stable doors after the horses have galloped away. To be fair to the BJP (and all other political parties) the spectre of Corporates and other lobbyists who pump money into political parties during elections are to be blamed; there is no such thing as a free lunch, they will demand their pound of flesh later on. As for the running expenses of political parties, they should use their own resources by legal means to fund the elections. Once they accept money in the form of 'donations', then the door is open for hanky panky and corruption running into billions of Rupees. The Election Commission of India should have the legal power to prosecute, fine, and file criminal cases in special fast track Courts against political parties, Corporates, individuals, and other entities indulging in such practices. This is a must if India is to clean itself of mass corruption which has eaten into its pillars.

If Congressmen? by s ramji on 07 Nov 2012

BJP is a great party. They accept that shell companies put money in Purti - they also claim gadgari had nothing to do with shell companies- they say the driver stands guarantee for loans? looks like either industrialists or financiers or black money holders are the drivers, chef, barber, astrologer of gadgari. only one honest question to BJP hope they will give a honest answer - if a congress man was in place of gadgari would BJP accept drivers can give personal guarantee for loans of companies and subscribe crores too capital of shell companies - the same jaitley, sushma, rudy, vonkiah would have shouted shame shame in all me media meets - today they have been told not to open their mouth answering any question on gad Gag.

Dhritraashtra Syndrome by Naren Joshi on 07 Nov 2012

It is ubfortunate that the party so accutely self-conscious about its 'chaal, charitra and chehraa' has fallen prey to what can only be described as ' Dhritraashtra Syndrome'. In a blatant rebuff to the high standards of probity in public life the party has chosen to hide behind the fig leaf of an 'internal audit' which clears their tainted chief of any 'legal moral wrong doings'.Will they take the same view of an 'internal audit' by A.Raja, Suresh Kalmadi, Dayanidhi Maran, Robert Vadra et al? Their leaders seem to totally blind to the great damage their recent shenanigans are doing to their image as a 'party with a difference'. May I remind them that while they act blind the voting public is wide awakke and is keenly following all their misdeeds?

The real face of BJP by Avinash Sharma on 07 Nov 2012

This is the real face of BJP, Gadkari is the most corrupt person by way of money laundering, black money and corruption and still gets a clean chit from his party. If BJP can be so corrupt being in opposition, what will happen if they come to power?, they will sell the country for their personal gains.

GADKARI by sadakchap on 07 Nov 2012

NOW that the top brass of BJP have given him a clean chit, Gadkari should quit-to maintain the highest traditions of the office. Top leaders of the BJP swear by Ramayan and Ram Janmabhoomi-there is an episode of AgniPareeksh by Sita. Gadkari would do well to emulate SitaMa and prove his innocence. JAI SHREE RAM!!!!!

BJP AND GADKARI by sadakchap on 07 Nov 2012

Now that the BJP honchos have given a clean chit to Gadkari, it is time for Gadkari to reciprocate it. Gaadkari must be familiar with Ramayana- just as Seeta underwent an AGNIPARIKSHA on being rescued from Ravan, Gadkari should resign his post as the President of BJP-to maintain the traditions of the highest office and also in accordance with Ramayana. This will add to his stature, though not, on the same intellectual level of Swami Vivekananda. JAI SHREE RAM!!!!!

no choice by geekay on 07 Nov 2012

what other choice do they have? To save face they have to put up a mask and say their money laundering leader is clean.
