New Delhi After closing themselves to questions for a day, top BJP leaders on Wednesday came out in guarded defence of their party president, saying it was unfair to hold him guilty of alleged wrongdoings even before a probe.

But they stopped short of giving Nitin Gadkari a clean chit on allegations over the business dealings of his Purti Group, and L K Advani made the point that the president of the BJP must hold himself to a standard that is higher than the one it demands of its political opponents.

A BJP source aware of the disagreements within the party over a second presidential term for Gadkari summed up Wednesday’s reactions: “Nitinji ko mohlat mili hai, abhaydaan nahin [Nitinji has got time (to prove his innocence), not an assurance that he has nothing to fear].”

Advani was first off the blocks Wednesday morning, suggesting that the allegations against Gadkari were “about standards of business and not misuse of power or corruption”, and congratulating the BJP president for “voluntarily asking for an inquiry”.

“It is a fair and proper response,” Advani said in a press statement.

Later, Sushma Swaraj tweeted, “It is unjust and unfair to accept these allegations as true without a probe. We the members of BJP trust our president and stand firmly behind him.”

Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Arun Jaitley pointed out that Gadkari “has already taken correct steps to express his readiness to face a probe by any agency”.

These statements came after the RSS said it was up to the BJP to decide on the fate of Gadkari, who had looked set to become party president a second time before allegations about shell companies investing in his enterprises surfaced.

In their statements, Advani, Swaraj and Jaitley indicated that their support was only meant for “our president” against the UPA’s “strategy to paint the entire political class with the same brush to minimise and escape its unpardonable sins”.

They also hinted that their backing was subject to Gadkari clearing his name, with Advani underlining that the BJP president would have to be tested against a more stringent yardstick, befitting the requirements of a ‘party with a difference’.

“I am of the view that the BJP should be different and should not claim immunity on either the scale or nature of the allegations,” Advani said, reiterating what he had said at the party’s national council meeting last month.

“When it comes to even a hint of corruption within our own ranks, we must be even more intolerant and resolute than when we attack the same in our adversaries,” Advani had said then.

Party leaders said Gadkari has a task on his hand convincing senior leaders to back him before the process for the party presidential election begins late next month. BJP leaders are likely to be called to give their views at an RSS meeting in early November.

In his statement, Advani attacked the Congress, saying the allegations were “more to neutralise the unprecedented charges against the UPA”, and hoping that the ruling establishment “will not use its political hostility to the BJP to colour the inquiry”.

BJP is no exception by Kumar P Nair on 25 Oct 2012

The congress party leaders and their kith and kin in a way or other has amassed wealth by dubious ways. And to highlight the same BJP demanded their heads while it was boomeranged to their party chief they have nothing to say - hence no difference to both the entity in the political spectrum with the exception each party is engaged in some dubious weys and means of amassing wealth. AREN'T THEY ASHAMED FOR ADOPTING THIS DOUBLE STANDARDS. If the BJP want to win the confidence of the masses, the BJP chief has to be a role model by stepping down, for, in the ensuing elections they have some thing to claim rather than hiding behind the RSS. It's unfortunate to see RSS too backing the chief of BJP.

How BJP is a party with difference? by Yogi M. P. Singh on 25 Oct 2012

Senior leaders of BJP Party says that their party is party of difference. Initially I couldn't understand that what is a difference between BJP and other parties but now I have understood the difference . If we compare BJP with the congress ,then we observe that one is facing charges that son in-law of party president is indulged in the corruption but in case of BJP ITS two party presidents ,one caught red handed taking bribe on photo camera and other currently facing the charges made by a whistle blower.Charges are made first and investigation is latter process. These leaders even doesn't know the basic law of land. What is the need to know the law of land as they are above the law?

BJP self-examination by Deepak on 25 Oct 2012

If BJP feels that it is an internal matter, they should scrutinise the allegations themselves. It should not take more than a day as the media did not take long to disclose the facts. BJP is hiding behind the same justifications as the Congress that Gadkari should not resign without a probe, it is only a private business matter, it is not political or corruption matter, it is meant to divert attention from Congress scams and tar all with the same brush, Congress should act against its own party first, he has asked for a probe, etc. All these arguments hold no water and do not justify Gadkari's lapses.

PARTY WITH A DIFFERENCE? by shyam sundar on 25 Oct 2012

BJP has gone and painted itself with the same brush as it has been painting INC & other parties with. People in high places are expected to exhibit greater probity and ethics. They must not take shelter behind the argument %u201CINNOCENT UNTIL PROVEN GUILTY%u201D which INC and other parties are doing. Remember M.C.Chagla and Lal Bahadur Shastri? The fall-out will be on the election prospects of BJP. Nitin Gadkari should voluntarily step down from the high office and set an example, even at this late stage. The fundamental question is: %u201CARE PERSONS IN HIGH PLACES ABOVE LAW?%u201D A common citizen doesn%u2019t get this benefit!

All the same by veera on 25 Oct 2012
