Before Modi can fulfil dream, JDU sets terms

Ravish Tiwari

Posted: Dec 21, 2012 at 0132 hrs IST

New Delhi With Narendra Modi’s third consecutive victory adding to the clamour within the BJP to nominate him as party’s prime ministerial candidate, BJP’s ally JDU on Thursday said the saffron party will have to keep in mind their “sentiments” on this issue unless it has decided to go it alone in the next Lok Sabha elections.

“If the BJP decides to contest the 2014 Lok Sabha elections alone, it can decide its candidate singlehandedly. But if it wants to contest elections in alliance, it will have to keep the sentiments of its allies in mind,” JDU leader in Rajya Sabha Shivanand Tiwari told The Indian Express in response to queries. “As of yesterday, the BJP leaders have been maintaining that they have several capable leaders (as the PM candidate). No single leader has been pointed out to us. And we are under the impression that it will be decided within the NDA partners and not the BJP alone,” Tiwari said.

Asked what those JDU “sentiments” were, Tiwari said, “What we have to say on this issue, we have already communicated to the BJP. First, we have said that NDA’s prime minister candidate should be announced before the Lok Sabha elections the way it had done in case of Vajpayee and even Advani. Second, BJP being the largest party in the alliance, we are in agreement of a BJP leader being named the candidate. Thirdly, we expect that the candidate should be a person who can take all sections of society along given the diverse social composition of Indian society.”

Asked whether :secular credentials” were an essential part of the candidate’s description, Tiwari said, “Please do not put words into my mouth. Nitishji has publicly said what he had to say on it. This (secular credentials) too is part of it.”

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s reluctance to acknowledge Modi’s supremacy within the NDA is no secret. He had prevailed on the BJP leaders to keep Modi off the BJP campaign during Bihar assembly elections in 2010. Given Bihar’s 40 Lok Sabha seats, JDU’s conditions will be a spanner in Modi’s supporters’ effort to get him nominated as the NDA’s PM candidate for 2014.

MANDATE FOR GOOD GOVERNANCE by R. VIJAYAKUMAR on 21 Dec 2012

It is a mandate for good Governance from electorate of Gujarat. It should be respected. If the good governance is extended to PAN India it is good for the country. It is to be decided by Mr.Modi and the BJP Party. Unnecessary media hype is not required.

Modi's victory by A poor Indian on 21 Dec 2012

The Gujarat election result is really admirable, but it should be noted that it is not a vote for Modi or BJP or so, each vote BJP got now is the drop of blood oozing out of the poor common man's heart. He(the common man)really wants somebody to get elected and rule the country who can do something good to him. He is really fed up and is under the pressure or heavy taxes, caste and family politics, corruption to make keep the present rulers alive to stash looted money in tax heavens. All the above should come to an end. Time is running out, pl. start thinking for a proper decision which should come out in another 15 month's time.

modi can lead the nation by arjun on 21 Dec 2012

it is tragical in indian polity that a person of highest calibre with longer and farthest vision has to prove his credentials to leaders of political parties who has narrow and shallow base of their own. countrymen knows the credentials of mayawati, mulayam singh, lalu parashad yadav and ram vilas paswan the so called seculars and messiahs of downtrodden. why narender modi should not lead the country...he is perfect person to take india at world leadings nation level given him 10 years to lead the country.

WINING WITH DISTINCTION by SMNAHAR on 21 Dec 2012

No doubt 3 times in a row is not a new thing but three times with two third majority surely is as pass with distintion and so the calibre of the leader should be recognised by one and all.The most important of all his development agenda, and support from all section of public is unique

winning 3 times for PM candidature. by devadasan on 21 Dec 2012

Party has not put the new formula that winning 3 times for PM candidature, It is media creation only.

NOT IN THE FIRST TIME by L.C.PRASAD on 21 Dec 2012

Winning Three Times in a Row is not new in India. Please do not forget CPI(M) had ruled W.Bengal continuously more than 30 yrs. In Indian Democracy it is a Magic. It does't represent the peoples real verdict.

Not in the first time... by harsh on 21 Dec 2012

It doesnt represent the peoples real verdict ??? Then what does ?? If elections with 72% voter turnout doesnt reflect the peoples real verdict, what does ??? Elections are the supreme decision making forum in a democracy and Modi has done it fair and square. At least have the courage to respect him and the peoples verdict.

SINGLE STATE PARTY CANNOT DICTATE TERMS by P C SHARMA RTI on 21 Dec 2012

Modi is suitable candidate for PM & the same should be decided by his party. The single state dominated party has nothing to dictate her term. If we would like to keep democracy alive, there should be two party system so that the country should be run smoothly. By dictating terms the regional parties are blackmailing, which should be avoided. Due to which the appeasement chapter is repeating again and again by the main party. P C SHARMA RTI & SOCIAL ACTIVIST
