According to the police, the locals in Varkala near here were looking for a youth, “a black man”, allegedly involved in a theft in the district. But when they saw the 22-year-old youth early on Monday morning, they caught hold of him and spread the word that the “fugitive black man” has been caught.
Amir was then tied to an electric post and painted black to give an impression that he is the “black man”. He was also forcibly made to wear a black shawl.
The police was informed later that a youth has been nabbed with tools used for theft. When the police reached the spot, the mob did not allow them to leave with the youth. Later after senior police officers intervened, they agreed. But this did not stop the police from booking Amir on charges of attempt to theft. He was later remanded in judicial custody.
“He had not committed any crime. Amir was a migrant worker. He became a victim of the “black man” threat,” said Varkala Police Inspector S Shaji.
He said the youth might have landed in trouble because he did not know Malayalam and so could not have been in a position to answer the questions of the locals.
The Inspector said a case has also been registered against 50 persons on charges of disrupting the official duty of police.
“We do not know whether the youth himself carried the tools and keys or the mob planted them on him. He was not involved any criminal activity,’’ the police said.

what heppend in Kerela is oftenly seen in verious parts of this country of ours perhaps we have lost our culture of ATITHI DEO BHAW, AND REGULERLY breking the hurts of our own brothers.
SHAME AND DISGRACE to all those who talk about secularism and democracy in Mafia ruled india. If this would have happened in the Punjab, the entire media and every second indian would have blamed rise of Sikh militancy in Punjab. From daily Media reports it can be proved who are anti secular and anti indians. I read Indian Express since decades and I hope the Editoral board and management maintains its independent journalism as it did in the past and bring such issues regularly to the knowledge of their readers
ALTHOUGH IT IS UNFORTUNATE, KERALA IS WITNESSING A SERIES OF ANTI SOCIAL ACTIVITIES, CRIMES AND THEFTS FROM THE NON-KERALA MIGRANTS, WHO ARE LANDING IN HUNDREDS IN THE RAILWAY STATIONS OF KERALA IN SEARCH OF GOOD FORTUNES. AS THEY PUT IT, THEY ARE GETTING RS.500/- FOR A MODEST 8 HOUR WORK IN KERALA, WHILE BACK AT THEIR HOME STATE, THEY GET HARDLY 150 RS. PER DAY, DESPITE BONE BREAKING EFFORTS. MORE INCOME IS OFTEN DRIVING THEM TO PLEASURES TO CROSS THEIR LIMITS TO COMMIT THEFT, KIDNAP GIRLS AND OTHER ANTI SOCIAL ACTIVITIES MAINLY BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT VIEWED WITH SUSPICISION BUT RATHER TRUSTED MORE AND RESPECTED FOR THEIR QUIET WORK. THIS IS ON THE INCREASE IN KERALA AS WORKERS FROM WEST BENGAL, BIHAR, UP, ASSAM ARE LANDING AND FINDING KERALA A SAFE HEAVEN. MOST OF THEM CLAIMING TO BE FROM THESE STATES ARE ORIGINALLY FROM BANGLADESH, WHICH EVEN THE AUTHORITIES IN KERALA DO NOT KNOW OR REALIZE. LET THEM WORK AND EARN MODESTLY THAN INVOLVING IN LAW AND ORDER ISSUES. GOOD FOR THEM.
Keralites were the first and largest group of migrants to other parts of the country. It does not become of a Keralite to speak ill of other migrants in search of a livelihood. Any Indian has the right to go to any part of India. And morality is not a preserve of any group of people.
For your knowledge in 60s, 70s trains full of Keralites were comming regularly to Bombay seeking jobs. I have accomodated many in my own Flat in Kurla. As an Indian every indian has right to live, work and move in any part of the country. I remember no taxi or Rickshaw driver in Tamil Nadu and Kerala was willing to take me as I deliberately spoke with them in our national language - Hindi. Anti social and Anti indians are those who do not tolerate, accept and respect co- existance of their own Country men and women.
Yes, there has been a lot of immigrants from kerala who have settled outside the state and even more may be outside india. Sorry to say this, but if you haven%u2019t noticed keralites are the most preferred employers (atleast amoung all the immigrants) in most places in and outside the country. When I say outside, I especially meant the middle east. You may argue that its just because they are the most in number (of indians) there, but that is not the only reason. And please donot compare kerala and tamil nadu, which generally is the attitude of many who just refer all these south Indians as just %u2018madrasis%u2019. To say the fact, Tamilians don%u2019t like to use any other language other than their own mother tongue and are even a bit repulsive towards anyone and everyone who doesn%u2019t use it. However, we keralites are more tolerant and acceptable of others%u2019 culture and practices. We ( most of us) are open to movies and music from all the south indian languages, english and even hindi. I have myself heard from many of my north indian colleagues saying that we people are more mingling and more cooperative than many other south Indians that they know. The experience that you had in kerala is just a rare one, I would say. And now, this tolerance and cooperative mentality of the average malayalee%u2019s is what that is being taken advantage of. Where else, have you seen such a boom in immigrant workers, where there isn%u2019t much of an infrastructure development in itself? This incident that has been reported is just a manifestation of the frustration that the people have against the crimes that are on a rise after the inflow of these illiterate immigrants especially from the north eastern part of india and bihar. Just to make myself clear, (not that I support what the people have done in varkala) we believe in communal harmony and social tolerance ( of all castes and cultures ) and we don%u2019t protest unless it is absolutely necessary .
Uncivilized people of Kerala. Must force them to apologize them from innocent Amir.
