Bollywood demands justice for 23-year-old gangrape victim.

Mumbai Bollywood celebrities like Amitabh Bachchan, Shabana Azmi and Shekhar Kapur came forward to express their grief and anger over the death of 23-year-old Delhi gangrape victim in a Singapore hospital on Saturday, calling it a shameful day for the country.

The victim was taken to Mount Elizabeth Hospital in Singapore for further treatment after her condition deteriorated. She was earlier being treated at Delhi's Safdarjang Hospital after being brutally assaulted on the night of December 16 in South Delhi.

“'Amanat', 'Damini' just a name now... her body has passed away, but her soul shall shall forever stir our hearts!!!,” Amitabh Bachchan posted on Twitter.

His son Abhishek, who has a daughter with wife Aishwarya Rai, said, “I have always been a very proud Indian. Today, we should ALL be ashamed. Will it always take an innocents death for a nation to awake? This is not the country I grew up in as a child, this is not the country I want my daughter to know whilst she grows up!.”

Singer Lata Mangeshkar said, “Enough is enough. It is not the death of Nirbhay Damini but the death of humanity in our country. It is time for the government to wake up from its deep slumber and punish the criminals behind this heinous crime.”

Veteran actress Shabana Azmi, who has been very vocal on the issue, tweeted, “And SHE PASSES AWAY in S'pore RIP. Our impotence stares us in the face. May SHE become the wakeup call our country needs. We must soul search.

“Safety of women is a prerequisite of a civilised society. We do not want to be deified as goddesses we want equality we demand respect. It is time to reflect, to analyse, to soul search how each segment has been culpable and led to a mindset that makes man treat woman like property (sic).

“Her greatest betrayal is that we will forget. Political system's greatest hope is we will forget. Our only redemption is if we do not forget,” said filmmaker Shekhar Kapur.

Mahesh Bhatt: “Shut all temples where you pretend to worship the female form. Cry India! Your hands are drenched with the blood of your own daughters. Woman your silence will not protect you. Speak or be silenced forever. Rage.”

Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap said, “I am ashamed.. And sorry. And angry.”

Anupam Kher tweeted, “This is Death of Human Dignity, Death of Being an Indian, Death of Innocence and This is also Death of A System. India is Heart Broken. RIP. This is NOT the time to shut down Metros, India Gate or India. This is the time to Apologise, Say SORRY for letting People down.

“Why does someone need to be sacrificed to start a revolution? I hope her sacrifice is not in vain!,” said Ajay Devgn.

Farhan Akhtar wrote: “Numb. All political parties unwilling to take action against their own members who have insulted and degraded women with sexist comments. Question is if they can't keep their house clean, how can we expect them to clean society?”

Actor Boman Irani posted, “She was like a soldier of revolution. If forgotten, the shame on us is greater than the one's we accuse!”

“Our fighter lost the battle of life. Her only fault, she ventured out of the house at night, walking the streets of the national capital expecting to be safe. The day a woman can walk freely on the roads at night is when India will be truly independent. RIP democracy!,” tweeted Akshay Kumar.

“RIP to a brave girl who fought in a weak and paralysed country...shame on all of us!,” said Karan Johar.

Actress Bipasha Basu said, “Disheartened and disturbed! Rip the braveheart girl!

“Please don't let her tragic death be in vain. RIP Nirbhaya. This has been our country's most shameful moment. I hope we can atone for what has been done. If there is a time for a “band” a day of mourning than its today. Not only for this braveheart but also for all unsung victims of such heinous crimes,” tweeted Sonam Kapoor.

Actor Arjun Rampal tweeted, “Amanat has died and has left this country to hang its head down in shame. I sincerely do hope there will be redemption for her soul.

“RIP Damini, today is a dark day in our democracy. We should pledge not to let dust settle on this fight till the end,” said filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar.

Actor Riteish Deshmukh tweeted, “Just heard the braveheart girl is no more. True fighter. Sad it takes a tragedy for us to wake up. Prayers with the family.

“RIP dear one. I feel like a part of me died today,” actress Dia Mirza said.

Time To Wake-UP by mayur on 29 Dec 2012

Hello India, Please wake-up now at-least & clean your minds. Wash out all your cruel & dirty thoughts for others. Everybody, please start it from yourself first & then advise others. I also started it. If this happen with every Indian, then there will be no brutal crime like this happened. I really felt ashamed & heart-broken for this incident happened. I also felt sorry for her. This girl is really FIGHTER & MARTYER. I salute her & pray for her soul's rest.

Bollywood by Balu on 29 Dec 2012

The least Bollywood can do is to tone down violent scenes and vulgarity in the films made by it. In every college scene in any Bollywood film, boys in group are shown teasing and harassing girl students. In good city colleges, such thing rarely happens in reality. But some boys, especially from colleges in moffussil towns may be tempted to imitate film heroes.

Curbing rape by Dr B Sundara on 29 Dec 2012

Very sad indeed. She is gone, her sacrifice should be a turning point for a safer India for women. The rapists deserve no less a punishment than public hanging. The government must do everything required to stop these henious acts by men.No one should get away from severest possible punishment delivered quickly. There have been instances of foreigners being raped in India. Certainly the country's image is getting tarnished and India appears unsafe for women. It is time to act and stop these savage behaviour by men.The solution:1.Severe punishment within three months 2.Efficient and empathetic police force 3.All support to rape victims 4.Moral education at schools to respect women 5.Adult education to men through mass media 6. Training of women in self defence.7.Self protection by women themselves by whtever the means they consider appropriate

Her Memory will Last Forever by Seif A. Somalya on 29 Dec 2012

I and my wife and daughter were heart-broken when finally her body could fight no more. I hope the parliament enacts some tough laws on everything which will protect and enhance the life of a woman. First make it illegal to give or ask dowry above certain limits - the dowry system has systematically degraded the women to some form of chattels which need to have a price - women, my mother, my sister, my aunties, my nieces, my she-cousins are all priceless - they are not for bargain. Change now with tough institutional laws, and put surveillance cameras on all bust and taxi stands and have police patrols everywhere - on motor-bikes too ! Fire any law enforcement officer immediately if there is even perception of dereliction of duty.

Bollywood mourns victim by Varadhan Iyer Dombivli on 29 Dec 2012

India Lost another daughter and I feel from the bottom of my heart that I have lost my daughter. I request all the so called Hindi Film industry celebrities - who call themselves Bollywood, the word copied from Hollywood - come out in public together in protest for strict laws with political reforms, police reforms etc. Also I dont understand why some actors/actresses who are members of some political party, are not raising their voice-to dismiss certain politicians from their party who have made negative comments about women, for example Mulayam Singh Yadav, Abhijit Mukherjee etc ??

shame on the society by suseela on 29 Dec 2012

it is high time each segment of the society wakes up to some introspection and makes earnest resolutions to make our country a better place to live.wish the film industry projects woman in better light and do away with eroticism and absolute adult content.

Pray for Her by Erika Fernandes on 29 Dec 2012

I and my family deeply mourn for the girl who was gang raped in Delhi. We only wanted her to live and can't still believe that she is not alive. They should treat the criminals as if they have done crime to the country. This girl is our sister, our daughter and our family member. Please give her justice.
