Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee questions imam allowance

Express news service

Former West Bengal chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee has questioned the Trinamool Congress government’s decision to grant an allowance to imams.

Kolkata Former West Bengal chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee on Sunday questioned the Trinamool Congress government’s decision to grant an allowance to imams, saying it would give the BJP an opportunity to reap political mileage in the state.

Addressing a CPM rally in Dum Dum, Bhattacharjee said: “Imams have been doing this jobs for ages. Why do we have to allocate money for them? Lakhs of Muslims are not getting jobs. I arranged for reservation for Muslim youths, but now that has been stopped. Now the BJP is saying that if you allot money for imams, why don’t you allocate money for Hindu priests in temples? It is bound to raise a communal bogey in the state and BJP will make the most of the communal divide.”

The BJP reacted sharply to Bhattacharjee’s comments. Rahul Sinha, state president of the BJP, said: “The BJP’s growth in the state is because of the misdeeds of TMC and CPM...both indulge in appeasement of minorities....”

Bhattacharjee also criticised the government for spending a lot of money on advertisements, especially printing the CM’s pictures on government advertisements while the state is reeling under a financial crisis.

Wage to Imman by Joseph on 14 Jan 2013

First immans, then priests and a share will be to the Politicians. What ever the money is spent by any government is not reaching 100% to the deserved persons and it is going to politicians only. Now this action is not a healthy one based on religion.

Vote Bank Politics by Mayank on 14 Jan 2013

All us know that, the next general elections are just a year away (2014). TMC, Congress, SP and left will try their best to impress the muslim voters of the country. I don't know how can Mamata Banerjee justify this act? West Bengal is so badly poverty ridden and she wants to give some stupid allowance to the IMAMS. Left is no less bad as they are using the name of BJP to stop this. BSP, SP, Congress, TMC, Left are the worst parties of this country. First they themselves use the reservation and caste based politics and then afterwards put all the blame on the BJP..... I reall appeal to all of you to kindly think before you vote.

Political Mileage by Pravin Jand on 14 Jan 2013

Great. So, allowance to Imams is not wrong in principle, but just because BJP will take political mileage. Mamata is not doing this for political mileage herself ? And reservation Buddhadas gave to muslims was not political mileage ? Whom are you trying to fool ?

stupid fools by bansi on 14 Jan 2013

it seems CPM AND TMC are not satisfied with partition of bengal .they want to give away a sizeable chunk of land to muslims to prove their secular credentials continue till you hand over remaining bengal to muslims on a platter

Right on by Saurabh Prakash on 14 Jan 2013

He is so right. The answer of all Congressmen to any issue is appeasement of Muslims. Mamta Banerji is a former Congresswoman and hence thinks no different. Not only has she started this allowance but even when a Muslim who is her party worker has teased a Hindu girl she is silent. Now the Aam Aadmi Party deserves a chance. If they fail then the BJP would deserve a chance of forming a government at the Center on its own strength before we can write them off. When on their own they will have to be more responsible when in a coalition. The Congress on the other hand has behaved irresponsibly very often and now in Rahul Gandhi they have a leader who cannot inspire anyone.

Fools in power by narayanan on 14 Jan 2013

Whether it is communists or Trinamul mob,the Bengal is destined to suffer. The legendary leader Jyothi Basu's long tenure as CM has caused irreparable damage to the state. As a result of 30 and odd years of communist rule Bengal went back in development and poverty rules the state. Millions of Bengali workers have migrated to south India in the recent past in search of a better living.Even Tamil nadu industrialists are employing them for a pittanceNow Bengali worker is the cheapest worker in India. The land of Rabindranath Tagore and Vivekananda. has become a beggar state.Mamatha is another demigod.Bengal is in between devil and deep sea.

Suicidal Bengali by Subhasis on 14 Jan 2013

We never want a dynamic person like Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee as a CM. It would always be Jyoti Basu or Mamta whose work would lead WB to destruction.

Violates Constitutional mandate by Venugopal V.K. on 14 Jan 2013

Since part of the tax revenues of the State is now being "appropriated in payment of expenses for the promotion or maintenance of any particular religion or religious denomination" (quote from Art. 27 of the Constitution), WB Govt's move may fall foul of Constitution. Payment of allowance to Imams is clearly for maintenance of a particular religion and therefore tax payers' money cannot be used for that purpose. The solution is not even-handedness by paying similar allowances to Hindu Priests and Christian Padris as that will also be wrong. Why is the State funding what is purely a religious activity? I hope Kolkatta High Court will take suo motu cognizance of the decision and consider its Constitutional validity.

Three Idiots by Doctor on 14 Jan 2013

Three Idiots: Cngress, CPM, TMC are same variants of anti-national idiots. All CPM and TMC families were kicked out by muslims of bangladesh. Now they have not only allowed those terrorists to settle in India in crores, but also licked their feet for vote bank policy. Before shooting those muslims we must demolish those political stupids.

dirty vote bank politics by ravi on 14 Jan 2013

The so called secularist parties are trying to appease minority groups just for vote banks and if BJP does for hindus then it is communal. Shame on you, u people pay money for Huj and loot hindu temples. If we take example of Tirupati Balaji government takes 94% of funds and derails them to appease minorities. In my view every religion and their sentiments should be equally respected rather than playing same old dirty politics. Bharat mata ki jai

WHY WORRY ? by N.ASTI on 14 Jan 2013

Mr Buddadeb need not worry.BJP may take up the point, but will not continue. No one right from Modi(Highly defamed thro' allegations of polarisation)and BJP up to Congress, would and should worry for a divided society.Even Hindu priests would not like the issue to be taken-up as it would damage secular fabric. In case you are Hindu at least by birth,is your mind not indicative of Hindu-thinking at large?United we stand, divided we fall is practiced highly by the majority community for getting a good fall. They should learn something from our minority community brothers.Hats off to them for remaining united.

Imam Allowance by Tutu on 14 Jan 2013

Good and able as well as honest Budhababu is thrown out by Bengalis and bring TMC to power. In last 20 months , the result is before all of us about how the show is run in Bengal. All works are done in the dark of night - be it fixing of Trident light or fixing cut outs of " Symbol of Honesty " . Only work in day time by TMC goons, is to rape and molest our sisters and daughters and beating the opposition leaders and workers. Crores are rupees are provided to local clubs so that they can play cards ( gambling ) and drinks at night in club offices. And that is why crime rates has gone up sharply. The credit for loot and failure goes to her only as all decisions are her only. Bengal leads was and will be a tamasha at our cost. Due to wrong decision in last election, bengal is suffering and future will be very dark under Mamata.

Yes, you have said the truth. My personal opinion is also the same. Dark future ahead. I don't know where W.Bengal will reach after more 3 years of her ruling.

Idiots in Power by prabhjit on 14 Jan 2013

The bongs have gone bonkers,be it the CPM of TC both are playing with fire. The mullahs and imams/ other religious nuts are the most regressive elements of society and they are being awarded for their regressive influence on society just for vote bank politics. They are however following the congresses Devkant Baruah who said that so long as Ali and Kooli supported them the congress will never be out of power. Its time other sections of society bicotted these so called secular parties by voting enmass against them, leaving them with only the Alis and koolies and no seats in legislatures. This will drive some sense into them, the Gujjus have done it and are progressing- no roits/ lafda after 2002.

Mr. by A.G.GOKHALE on 14 Jan 2013

It is absoluteely illogical for state government to pay allowance to Imams. CM must understand that thisgives rise to communal divide. Has She converted religion?

Allowance by Patriot on 14 Jan 2013

There is nothing wrong in giving allowance to Imams as long as money is not taken from Hindu temples and provided Hindu temple priests are also provided with similar allowance

Idiotic by Raja on 14 Jan 2013

This is just just idiotic, opening up a Pandora's Box. Every religion and sect will start demanding the same and then shy you say you do not have money for developmental works.

Allowance by Tutu on 14 Jan 2013

Not taken from Hindu Temples but it is public money only unless it is loot by TMC goons
