CPM: Mamata has created Frankenstein with Gorkhaland Territorial Administration

Kolkata The Opposition on Tuesday decried the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM) for raising the Gorkhaland demand before Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee at a government programme, with the CPM accusing the Trinamool Congress of having created a ‘Frankenstein’.

“We had repeatedly told her during signing of the agreement for the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration that the Chief Minister has created a Frankenstein in the GJM over which she will not have any control,” Leader of the Opposition Surja Kanta Mishra said.

Mishra, a senior CPM leader, also alleged that the Trinamool Congress-Gorkha Janmukti Morcha nexus was evident during the GTA elections when the TMC withdrew its candidates.

Left Front chairman Biman Bose said the tripartite agreement that led to the creation of the GTA had actually sowed the seeds of unrest in the hills.

Mocking at Banerjee’s oft-repeated remark “Darjeeling is smiling”, Bose said that on various occasions she had made the statement, but today she could realise from her own experience that it was not smiling.

“We had earlier said when the tripartite agreement was signed that though the GJM had agreed to the GTA, their final goal is Gorkhaland. The GTA agreement itself has sowed the seeds of problems,” Bose observed.

State Congress chief Pradip Bhattacharya, termed Tuesday incident of a section of GJM workers raising slogans for Gorkhaland as “unfortunate”

“The demand for a separate state could not be accepted,” he said and suggested that all political parties and the Centre look for a permanent solution to the Darjeeling problem within the constitutional framework.

Congress leader and Union minister Deepa Dasmunsi said, “ Mere scolding will not serve to bring a permanent solution to the hill problem. The sentiment of the people in the hills should be honoured while finding a permanent solution,” she said.

Green survey report of Haldia likely in 45 days: PCB

Kolkata: The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has engaged an independent agency to conduct an environmental survey in Haldia and other areas where a blanket ban has been imposed on setting up new industrial units on pollution grounds. Speaking on the sidelines of Indian Foundry Congress seminar in Kolkata on Tuesday, P B Rastogi, director with the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF), said they are expecting to receive the report from the agency by the middle of March. “After which the ministry will decide on whether to lift the moratorium,” said Rastogi. The ban on setting up of new industrial units, which was in force till March, 2012, and later extended as the levels of pollution at Haldia and other places like Asansol were very high with the comprehensive environmental pollution index (CEPI) exceeding 70. “If the CEPI was found to be 70 or less in the report, then the ban at Haldia and other places will be lifted. Otherwise it will remain in force,” he added.
