Cap on subsidised LPG will affect mid-day meal scheme: Mamata Banerjee

Mamata Banerjee called on her supporters to protest against the 'unethical and immoral' decision of the Central government.

Kolkata Accusing the Central government of not thinking about students while policy making, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday said the cap on subsidised LPG cylinders will badly hit the mid-day meal scheme.

"This is a very sensitive matter. The Central government has never thought of the fate of poor school children... There is a fear that these school children may have to go without food in schools due to enormous increase in price of non-subsidised LPG cylinder," Banerjee said in a post on Facebook.

Pointing out that the real impact of the restriction on subsidised LPG cylinders was unfolding now, she said, "Common people have been burdened with additional Rs 127 (exclusive of taxes) per cylinder. The price is likely to go up further in the coming months."

Calling her supporters to protest against the "unethical and immoral" decision, Banerjee said, "I'm told that more such unpleasant decisions are in the offing."

"Is it what the common people expect from reforms? In the name of reforms, 'loot chalche loot' (loot is going on). To suppress it, 'jhoot chalche jhoot' (lies are being spread)," she wrote.

gas by virodhi on 04 Oct 2012

If everyone works more intelligently then they will find solutions. Unfortunately India does not have LPG or petrol reserves that can be tapped for free. Necessity is the mother of invention. And how Mamata encourages invention will determine the fate of Bengalis. If there is someone else who can do a better job please step up and take over.

Mamtaji by Naresh Chand on 04 Oct 2012

I do not understand Mamta Banerjee, while she was Minister for Railways she used to live in Kolkata as result Railways were ignored & suffered. Now she is CM W. Bengal she keep herself busy in National politics, ignoring governance of state, still fighting communists to prove she more communist them CPM or CPI are. Why she instead congress call her party communist, Trinmoool communist Party.

Why should states by jyotsna on 04 Oct 2012

UPA Govt. when trapped in scams they are going for reforms to divert the attention from corruption, scandles etc.. If they think FDI in retail is really beneficial they should have gone much earlier few years ago.Going now they have really pushed us much behind. Govt. should be punished for that. a legal case should be started for working against Indian.

Decision in Haste by DSK on 04 Oct 2012

The centre Govt should have considered the following issues and the results should have been put into public domain before announcing the policy. 1. In lieu of the gas what fuel will be used for cooking. Wood, coal or some other fuel. Not many people in the urban or rural area's will use the expemsive gas in this inflationary economy? 2. What impact will the alternate fuels have on the environment? A environment impact stuidy should have been conducted. 3. How much forests will be cut for the food and the impact it will have on the green house gases. 4. How will the solid waste be disposed if coal is used? Where will the ash be dumped. 5. What measures are being taken to ensure that the ash does not flow in the agricultural land. 6. Which agency will monitor the compliance of the environmental law. The govt and industry spend so much money ,thereby increasing the costs on the product to protect environment so how is the subsidy not justified to protect the environment.

Chaddi Fool by Crystal on 04 Oct 2012

Ashvin, you appear to be a Chaddi RSS scoundrel. If the centre can subsidise 6 cyclinders, states can subsidise at least 3. They get sales tax revenues from sale of petro products

With automatic ORDERS assaulted the worst, no implementations shall ever work in our behalf being choosing of timings are wrong and full of loopholes. It is not the year 1991 when the said ORDER was manageable for us to derive a benefit.Ms.MAMATA is sitting upon a volcano with no cash available with Govt.to spend;what help we are extending to her;even through she had sacrificed her life from happening of an inevitable through her win in the Election for the good of the entire Country? We must understand that she is sitting at the null point of the balance and bound to embrace the System which might provide the Country some light at a much away distance.Let us not confuse ourselves to force everything to haywire everywhere.A spark with an ill will infused through securing of a self gain is enough to destroy the entire creation !

State should absorb it by Pradeep on 04 Oct 2012

Why cannot Mamata take good lessons from Congress ruled states and offer 3 more Gas cylinders to the poor. She can also make sure that good schemes like miday meal schme does not suffer by lifting the cealings for such schemes and provide additionally required cylinders from the State's fund.

Why should states absorb it? by Ashvin on 04 Oct 2012

You appear to be a Congi fool. Y shd states absorb it? Already Bengal is running a debt ridden government because of misrule of Left.. Now, because the UPA government has been incompetent, should states suffer?
