Carry pepper spray, knives, chilli: Pune top cop to women

Pune Pune Police chief Gulabrao Pol wants women to carry knives, chilli powder or pepper spray and use them in self-defence if attacked.

Speaking at a meet organised to discuss security of women, he suggested that initial self-defence measures should be taken by women before they call for help. “Women should carry knives, chilli powder or spray and use them in defence themselves against any man who may harass them. There is a provision in law that says a woman can attack any culprit in self-defence. Women can injure the man... raise an alarm, and call police for help,” he said.

He told women not to be afraid of his force. “More than 10 per cent of the Pune police force is women. We would be deploying female cops at welcome desks of all police stations so women can easily approach police and register complaints,” Pol said.

A Sad Day! by Rohan on 03 Jan 2013

It is a sad day for India indeed when the police, who are in charge of law and order, have abdicated their responsibility and are asking the women citizens to take care of their life, limb and izzat. What are the citizens of the country paying taxes that pay the Police their salary for if they have to take care of themselves?

law and order by shyam on 03 Jan 2013

Wonderful advice. Hope all CPs and HMs all over India issue circular to that effect so that women are safe in India. In this regard it is high time that when irressistible evidence in existence the accused should be straight away executed and not wait for years to complete the formality. In this case all accused have been arrested, the victim is no more and only witness may turn hostile under special circumstances - the judiciary suo moto take up this case and ensure strict punishment - removing their organs and allow them to live -

I want Gun license. by Vinod on 03 Jan 2013

Give us common citizens right to carry guns. It is not fair that only criminals should be allowed to carry weapons, hurt common people with it and then instead spending rest of his life in jail. He enjoys life on bails . Give me gun and i will never look upon police to save me and my dignity.
