In an RTI response to Lucknow-based student Aishwarya Parashar, the Home Ministry has told her that no action was taken on her plea to the President to declare Mahatma Gandhi as 'Father of the Nation' because Article 18 (1) of the Constitution does not permit any titles except education and military ones.
Aishwarya had filed number of RTI petitions seeking details about Gandhi and the reasons of referring him as Father of the Nation. In response, she was told that no such title has been accorded to Gandhi.
Driven by a patriot zeal, Class VI student Aishwarya wrote to the then President Pratibha Patil and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to issue a notification declaring Mahatma Gandhi as 'Father of the Nation'.
Aishwarya had filed an RTI petition seeking to know the action taken on her plea by the President and the Prime Minister.
The application was transferred to the Home Ministry with instructions to explain the action taken on her plea. In its response, the Home Ministry told Aishwarya the above mentioned reason why the title of 'Father of the Nation' cannot be accorded to Gandhi.

M.K. Gandhi was a Hindu leader and he believed varnashramadharma which is against the constitution and the will of every casteless people. First, will all Hindus accept him as the "father"? This is ridiculous! Legally and morally, any such title to the caste-ridden Gandhi should be deleted from the text books.
I think this is correct decision of Home Ministry as India is Bharat Mata.........So she should not have a father like humanbeing....India is Bharat Mata...............
Mahatma Gandhi was called always the Father of Nation... even before Constitution was formed. No idea why this girl got a doubt. The government cant declare anything of that kind now...
After all, we know that it the the Britishers who built India by uniting 500 plus kingdoms. So, the queen should be be called Mother of India. Gandhi just took over power to Aryans from Europeans. Indians are still under foreign rule.
There are so many priority issues before President of India. Such time wasting petitions will have no meaning. Let Honorable President clear the priority petitions like mercy petitions to hard core criminals including Azmal Kasab.
Raj,I disagree, it is important that our children learn that they can question anything under the sun. Before her, were you aware that MG can't be the Father of the Nation. We have blindly followed what we were taught, she has not. Salutes to her
I agree with Krishnan. Action by the young girl indicates her zeal for questioning. She also comes out as a person with initiative who is not afraid to take action on whatever she considers important. We need to het such spirit inculcated among young. Kudos to Aishwarya and her family which supported her.
