Kolkata, January 19 Addressing the first convocation of the St Xavier’s College in Kolkata after it was granted autonomy, Vice-President Hamid Ansari resorted to some tough talking on higher education in the country.

He was visiting his alma mater after 50 years on Friday. He expressed concern over the governance of the institutes of higher learning and described it as static.

Describing the education scenario as grim, he pointed out that the country has 350 universities and 17,700 colleges with 4.7 lakh teachers but the gross enrolment ratio is around 10 per cent.

Pro-Vice Chancellor of Calcutta University Suranjan Das, who presided over the function, talked about the partnership of excellence in education.

Ansari was the chief guest at the convocation and valedictory function of the 148-year-old St Xavier’s College where he studied from 1952-1955.

The college was granted autonomy in March 2006.
