Cops who caught gangrape accused set to be rewarded for ‘good work’

New Delhi The team of police officers who probed the December 16 gangrape incident are in line for a reward for their “exemplary performance”. Though the police force had faced a lot of flak from various quarters after the 23-year-old paramedic student was tortured and gangraped on a moving chartered bus, senior police officers believe that the investigating team did “good work”.

Delhi Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar said that rewards “will come” for police officers who had “probed the gangrape case” and caught the accused soon after the incident.

South Delhi police personnel caught the first of the six accused within 18 hours of the incident. In less than a week, all the accused, including a juvenile, had been apprehended.

Till now, the Delhi Police has spent 83 per cent of the funds meant for “cash rewards” to personnel as incentives for boosting their confidence.

“The Delhi Police kept a fund of Rs 66 crore for 2012-2013 for giving rewards to personnel doing ‘good work’. Of this, Rs 50 crore has been distributed among policemen,” Kumar said.

Cash rewards used to be categorised as a separate fund, till a few years ago. “However, most grants for this purpose now come under ‘special security’ fund and ‘other charges’, which may also be used for miscellaneous tasks such as purchasing buffer vehicles, etc. As for cash rewards, it varies in different districts and departments. Some districts may not give rewards at all,” a senior officer told Newsline.

Elaborating on the need and importance of such incentives, the officer said the reward sum is important for constable and sub-inspector rank personnel, who fall under “low salary” grades. “The salary of constables and sub-inspectors is not too high. Even a small sum means a lot to them. All middle-class people know that even a little extra money helps in managing the monthly expenses,” the officer said.

Apart from cash rewards, the Delhi Police also hands out other incentives.

In 2012, more than 2,000 personnel were promoted. Of these, 120 sub-inspectors had been promoted to inspector, 554 assistant sub-inspectors (ASI) had been promoted as SIs, 183 head constables had been promoted as ASIs and 1,253 constables had been promoted to head constable.

Five policemen received President’s police medals and 34 personnel received police medals for meritorious service in 2012. At least 125 policemen — 104 of them constabulary — received Asadharan Karya Puruskar in the same period.

Where i the delhi polie personnel, whom we used to see all around the roads by umesh on 22 Jan 2013

Mr Neeraj Kumar, Where i the delhi polie personnel, whom we used to see all around the roads immediately after the delhi brutual gang rape and the protests thereafter. On every one KM, we, the delhiests used to see atleast 1 or 2 delhi police personnel? Where did they come from then, and where have they disappeared now? Does Neeraj kumar think that delhi is the safest place for delhi people or the women in particular now, after the delhi gang accused were caught by the delhi police? It is rediculous to reward the delhi police personnel who arrested the accused. By doing so, the Police Commissioner is encouraging the delhi police personnel for not doing their jobs. If an arrest of an accused criminal is going to fetch reward for the delhi police personnel, what is ther job otherwise Mr Kumar, what are they being paid for? Ridiculous is your view of jocking with the delhi public.

Neeraj Kumar underlined the opinion of Delhi people by Umesh on 22 Jan 2013

In Delhi, people have a strong belief that too because of the policy of Delhi police that the salary the police personnel is drawing is for wearing the uniform, if you want them to work, you have to pay them seperately. Neeraj Kumar emphasised the feeings of the delhi people by appreciating the polie personnel who probed and arrested the delhi gang rape victims. It is right that they did a good job, but then, what is their job otherwise, and secondly, what about the punishments for the policemen, who let the bus pass while they were patroling in the Gypsies? Has Neeraj Kumar got any answer for that? The police force is being paid by the money being pid by the tax payers... and they are soppose to do what they did, it was not a favour to the delhiests nor to delhi as a while. First get the erraneous police personnel penalised and punished first and then you think about awzrding or rewarding the people personnel who just did their job for which they are getting paid for. Or else you tell

Why, why, why? by RKM on 22 Jan 2013

Why should the police be given special rewards for doing what they were hired and already paid to do?
