Kolkata, February 7 Come June and the city is most likely to witness the children of the ‘Cuban Five’ — Cuban nationals who are under detention in US prisons for the last decade on charges of espionage — participate in a rally.

Cuban envoy to India, Miguel Angel Ramirez, told The Indian Express during a recent visit to the city.

The children will be taking part in the rally as part of their worldwide tour to garner support for their fathers’ release.

A Havana-based group called Solidarity of which the Cuban Communist Party is also a member is trying to bring the children to Kolkata.

“The Solidarity group is trying to get in touch with various groups of Kolkata to organise the visit. They will also approach the CPM,” Ramirez said. The CPM, however, said that they have not heard of such a visit. State Minister for Tourism and Small-scale and Medium Industries Manab Mukherjee said: “But they are most welcome to Kolkata.”

The five Cuban nationals, who were arrested in Miami by US security personnel in Miami on September 12, 1998, are: Gerardo Hernandez, Antonio Guerrero, Ramon Labanino, Fernando Gonsalez and Rene Gonsalez.
