Dalit forum starts parallel English school

Kochi The Dalit Human Rights Movement (DHRM) in Kerala, which has been exhorting Dalits to shun Hindu religion and embrace Buddhism, has floated a parallel English school for children. Started on an experimental basis, the move is significant as DHRM wants to demonstrate the Dalit identity without the tag of the Hindu society.

Titled Home School, 4-year-old children, eligible for LKG class, would sit in their homes, where DHRM cadre would go frequently to take lessons. The outfit has selected 42 students from south Kerala, who will not go to regular schools, but will attend the classes imparted by DHRM cadres at their homes. They would be given general education for next three years.

The initiative was launched in Thiruvananthapuram last week. The students were given textbooks with each one’s photo on the front cover and their parent’s on the back.

“Dalit children were found wanting in English education. Many are neglected and insulted in mainstream schools. We decided to start a new school system exclusively for Dalits. Buddhist teachings would get special thrust in the higher classes in the coming years,’’ said Elakamon Vinod, DHRM leader in charge of the school project. DHRM state committee member K Saji said it has been a difficult task to convince parents about this parallel education system. The home school would be shifted from houses to a common centre next year. “We want our children grow with a Dalit perspective,” he said.

Started in 2007 as a regrouping of Dalit workers in various political parties, DHRM has been campaigning against caste system. Its followers have stopped going to temples and Ambedkar is being worshipped in homes.

The organisation came to limelight after its workers were arrested on charges of a murder at Varkala near Thiruvananthapuram in 2009.

burn them by Communal Award on 17 Oct 2012

300 million SC/ST people must always carry petrol sachets till they get back their Independent nation awarded to them by British in 1932 Round Table Conference. Pour petrol on your persecutors/their parents/ their children/their grand children/their supporters/their houses/their properties and burn them alive.

How? by P. Illango on 17 Oct 2012

This forum has been branded a terrorist organisation by the Kerala Government. I hardly see how this can be allowed to set up any sort of a school.

Re: Dalit forum starts special school by SHANKAR on 17 Oct 2012

Yeah good. This is the result of not knowing understanding our own culture which has been neglected by successive governments. Thes dalits are free to worship Ambedkar or anybody just do not claim reservation benefits. As you are now enlightened you are in fact superior. This is also due to the influence of the Church. Slowly you can even claim a piece of land as a separate nation too. Jai hind!!! Anything can happen here....

Re:Change Religion by Chennai Indian on 17 Oct 2012

I think it would be better if they form their own religion based on their Pre-Aryan worship style .Because embracing others religion is not the solution to get out of Hindu colonization,I still surprised how so many different cultured people agreed to follow this Indus valley dominant religion. If you analyse the methods of worship and name of gods ,you can easily conclude that Hinduism is nothing but fusion of dravidans and Indus valley culture. Now the so called Dalits should start their own religion because they can never be part of mainstream Hinduism and they will be treated as different from the Mainstream Hindus only.So it is better to have different tag and still getting the same different treatment and in the process they have their originality no need to dilute and worship and follow indus valley cultures.
