Chandigarh A day after three persons were arrested for allegedly assaulting a shopkeeper in Hisar when he tried to stop them from reportedly molesting a young woman, the “victim” on Tuesday appeared before a court claiming that the shopkeeper had intervened in her private affair.

The incident took place when the police produced the accused — Yogeshwar, Hardeep and Manjit — in court on Tuesday. The woman told the court that Yogeshwar was her fiance and they were having a argument when the shopkeeper, Abhinav Aggarwal, intervened and assaulted Yogeshwar. While claiming that despite her intervention, Aggarwal created an issue out of nothing, the woman demanded that action should be taken against the shopkeeper for assaulting Yogeshwar.

The case came to light as the media flashed CCTV footage that showed a group of youths thrashing Aggarwal. While speaking to the media, Aggarwal had alleged that he was beaten up when he tried to save a “molestation victim”.

While addressing mediapersons on Tuesday, Hisar SP Satheesh Balan said the case has taken a new twist as the the alleged victim had exonerated all the accused. “The police have also examined the CCTV footage, which narrates a different story from what was being projected till date,” he said.

“The victim today told the police that she had an argument with Yogeshwar. Both are about to get married in a few weeks and their families know each other. They had an argument near D N University and in the process, Yogeshwar snatched her phone. This scene was witnessed by Aggarwal, who mistook it as a molestation attempt and intervened,” ASI Harish Bhardwaj said.

He added: “He assaulted Yogeshwar and despite the victim asking him to leave, he did not stop. Yogeshwar called his friends and all three then assaulted Abhinav and even smashed the windowpanes of his house. Abhinav called the police and we registered a case on his complaint. When the three accused were arrested, the actual story emerged. Now, since the girl has also deposed before the court, we will take legal action against the shopkeeper.”

Shopkeeper trying to become hero by Ram on 09 Jan 2013

The shopkeeper here is the culprit. Without knowing the background, acting smart, he rushed to help the damsel-in-distress, so that like Indian hero-on-screen, he will first get good will and then sex from the woman. He gets the well deserved punishment.

Private quarrel on street ! by mohandas on 09 Jan 2013

Now ask for a law that no private quarrel onj the street ; otherwise poor men will be at the receving edge and there wont any one who molest and rape. Money can fly and also women can retrieve their pride by just saying that nothing took place and everything was private !

Leave the shopkeeper alone. by deepak on 09 Jan 2013

Over 74% rapes are false in India . by Ratika on 09 Jan 2013

Most Molestation and Rape cases in india are false , period .

74% false rape by ram on 09 Jan 2013

These are cheque bounce cases. The woman has consensual sex with the victim-man and then can file rape charges anytime later. So strange is the definition of rape.

they help create more molestation. by muralie dhara k on 09 Jan 2013

this girl instead of solving her problem in her house come out to street, how can one be sure what is there ? if the thing is truly molestation what would be her plight? Now who will care for those true victims? this is indecent behavior in public place by her and her so called fiance, they make many girls vulnerable for harassment. this tendency must be curbed. Under prevailing conditions in India the lover paradise on roads must be curtailed.

Strange case - I had a similar experience too by Giri on 09 Jan 2013

Hi Many years before I too went through a similar experience. In the road, a man and woman were having a heated argument and suddenly the man started slapping the lady though not injuring her dangerously. The lady was shouting back at him but did not seek help from onlookers. When I looked at them it appeared that they seem to know each other, but were indulging in a bad scene. I was in two minds and didn't intervene to stop the scuffle, because I too felt, 'what if the lady or man ask us not to intervene and mind my own business'. The pair left the place soon. Often I blame myself that I had turned a blind eye to a violent incident. But looking at this case, it appears that helping someone during a violent incident may be harmful to us too, where we may be blamed. But in such situations, the onlookers will not help the lady or the victim, but we may be blamed for being blind spectators. This is a case of violence against women in public and the subsequent reactions. Any comments?
