New Delhi Four men were arrested for allegedly raping and brutally assaulting a 23-year-old girl in a moving bus with police today saying that it will invoke attempt to murder charge against them and seek a fast-track trial for speedy justice. The bus driver Ram Singh, who along with six others, allegedly gangraped the para-medical student on Sunday night, was today remanded in police custody for five days in by a Delhi court to allow his custodial interrogation.

The police told Metropolitan Magistrate Namrita Aggarwal that the other three arrested culprits, Ram Singh's brother Mukesh, Vinay Sharma, an assistant gym instructor, and Pawan Gupta, a fruit seller, will be produced in court tomorrow.

Doctors at the Safdarjung Hospital, where the victim is being treated, said she had responded to the doctor's call and raised her hands in the morning and even read something which the doctors wrote on a paper.

Delhi Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar told reporters that the girl was in a "serious condition" but was doing

better than yesterday.

Dr B D Athani, Medical Superintendent of Safdarjung Hospital, said, "Her condition is better than yesterday. Her conscious level is much better than yesterday's. She underwent a surgery on Sunday."

The victim's male friend, an engineer who objected the men making lewd remarks at the victim, was also beaten up during the incident, which led to widespread outrage in Parliament and outside and demand for death penalty for rapists.

Investigators said that they will seek a fast-track trial for speedy justice in the case as well as write a proposal to Union Home Ministry seeking laws for invoking death penalty for rapists.

The Police Commissioner said the driver of the chartered bus, which was not legally permitted to run on normal routes, his brother and two more people had been arrested, while a massive manhunt has been launched to nab the remaining two accused. He said the accused were on a "joyride".

"Disturbed" over the gang-rape, the Delhi High Court assured women lawyers that it was looking into the "brazen" incident following a plea for a court-monitored probe.

Meanwhile, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit asked Chief Justice of Delhi High Court Justice Darmar Murugesan to immediately make functional five Special Fast Track Courts to try cases of assult on women, as approved by the Delhi government.

The Chief Minister, in a letter to the CJ, urged him to take "urgent" action in making the fast track courts functional.

While Ram Singh, Sharma and Gupta were arrested from the capital, Mukesh was nabbed from Rajasthan and had been brought to the capital, the Police Commissioner said, terming the incident as "most reprehensible".

The girl, who had come to Delhi from Dehradun for her internship, and her friend had boarded the bus at Munirka to go to Dwarka.

While Neeraj Kumar said two men were still absconding in connection with the incident, police later in court said three persons were absconding and they need to send teams to Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan to nab them.

"Ram Singh, who was not driving the vehicle that night, shouted that the bus was going to Dwarka and asked the couple to get into it. Once the bus started moving, they started misbehaving with the girl. Her male friend who protested and tried to save the girl was severely beaten up. The girl also tried hard to protect him," Kumar said.

But she was raped allegedly by Singh and other occupants of the vehicle which was being driven by Mukesh at the time of the incident. The duo were then brutally assaulted and dumped near Mahipalpur flyover, he said.

Kumar said the Delhi Police will seek a fast-track trial in this case on a day-to-day basis so that the accused given justice as soon as possible.

To a question, Kumar said the maximum punishment for this crime was life sentence, but as far as the demands for death sentence for such crimes are concerned, the Delhi Police will send a proposal in this regard to the government.

The city police chief said the bus, which was primarily a school bus, was being used for commercial purposes illegally by the driver.

On the sequence of events, Kumar said the men had allegedly looted a carpenter Ramadhar, whom they offered transport from R K Puram to IIT Gate, at around 8:30 pm, just before they reached Munirka from where they picked up the victim and her friend.

"The men in the bus started asking the them why they were travelling in the night and what they were up to. The male friend told them why should they be bothered. Then they picked up a fight and the boy was hit on his head. The girl also fought with them to save her friend but was hit.

"Then they were enraged and dragged the girl to backseat where they sexually assaulted her," Kumar said.

After assaulting them and dumping them, Ram Singh took to the wheels and then dropped the other five at their houses before parking the vehicle at his owner's place in Noida where he washed the bus in a bid to destroy evidence.

The next day, Monday, he drove back the bus to R K Puram but landed in the police net as investigators were waiting for him after tracking the bus. "The bus was cleaned. But we have got enough forensic evidence like nail scratchings, DNA, hair and lot of other things," Kumar said.

On Monday, almost all the accused went ahead with their daily job, he said

Tracking the bus helped investigators to crack the case soon, a senior police official said, adding the male friend gave them proper description about the bus and the seating arrangement.

"He told us that the colour of the vehicle was white and the word 'Yadav' was written on it. It was like a luxury bus. With the help of Transport Department records, we zeroed in on around 370 buses. Then we zeroed in on owners with surname Yadav and we found two.

"We went to first person who denied any involvement. Then we went to Dinesh Yadav. He told us that it could be his driver," he said.

The bus was spotted in Sector 3 of R K Puram yesterday afternoon and was impounded immediately. "The driver cleaned the bus but forensic examination revealed this was the bus in which the incident took place. The duo were dumped from the front gate of the bus," Kumar said.

To a question, Kumar said while the boy was hit by an iron rod, the girl was punched badly in her stomach.

The incident triggered outrage with students of Jawaharlal Nehru University staging a demonstration outside Vasant Kunj Police Station and blocking traffic.

horrible indians by bharatian on 11 Jan 2013

The brutal rap es on the roads of Delhi shows the rot that is India and the total corruption and the lawlessness that pervades North India. Corruption has become a way of life in India and most corrpt are the politicians and the policemen. The most horrific ra pe happened recently in the Delhi street was on 16 December 2012. Mohammad Afroz a 17 years and 8 month old muslim ra pist from UP inserted a wheel jack handle in to the va gine of a girl who boarded a bus along with her companion. Mohammad Afroz pulled out 95% of the intestines of the girl with his bare hands and rap ed the girl twice. The bus in which ra pe happened was a private bus of a south Delhi private school. The bus driver was a Bihari by name Ram Singh. On 16 December 2012 a 23 year old girl along with her 28 year old male friend got in to the bus thinking that it was a public transport. They were returning after watching a film in Delhi in the early evening. The girl was a physiotherapist intern. The only other passengers on the bus were five men who were friends of the driver. They brutally beaten up by the men in the bus with iron rods and the male friend became unconscious. The girl was pulled near to the drivers cabin and Mohammad Afroz inserted the wheel jack handle in to her private part. All the six men brutally ra ped her. The rapists were Mukesh Singh from Bihar and is the brother of driver Ram Singh. Others were Akshay Thakur , Vinay Sharma, an assistant gym instructor, Pawan Gupta, a fruit seller; Mohammad Afroz the 17 years and 8 month old muslim from UP who behaved like the Paki soldier who used a knife to slit the Bangladesi child so that he could ra pe her. After the beatings and ra pe ended, the attackers threw both the victims from the moving bus. Then the ra pists tried to drive the bus over the woman but she was pulled aside by her male friend. The road where they were dumped was the one leading to Delhi airport which is yards from where Badri Singh, the father of the girl who working as a loader at the airport. The bleeding naked duo were not helped by the passersby and the police arrived 45 minutes after some passersby called the police. Police argued for 30 mn among themselves as to whose jurisdiction the case will be, thereby wasting precious time. After the attack, the girl was taken to Safdarjang Hospital. She received multiple surgeries, and was placed on mechanical ventilation. On 26 December, she was moved to Singapore for further treatment, where she died on 29 December 2012. Septicaeimia was set in and the girl was certain to die. But the congress politicians shifted her to Singapore, a drama to stem the public protest. Bit dot ly/WytEHg

Shame on all you Indian men, you have proved to be savages and what about you women, hiding behind the name of tradition.Declare WAR - Women Against Rape. Protest against rape, teach your sons to respect women and your women to protect themselves, set up centres in schools, colleges, universities and workplaces to deal with bullies and corruption.

The punishment should be as severe as the crime committed. by sooutraged on 21 Dec 2012

I have never been a violent person but this level of brutality and senselessness calls for actions that are not ordinary. I am European and have also been a victim of a sexual assault when I was younger. I feel the sexual offenders should be treated with as much cruelty and brutality as the victims they attacked. Truly eye for an eye. Rape with an iron rod, torn intestines, critical condition - that should be enough to make the next potential offender think twice. Death penalty is too lenient, in my opinion. Suffering they inflict is far worse than just ending someone's life in a short, painless way. I really wish I could lay my hands on them.

Utterly by NoraJ on 20 Dec 2012

I am not Indian but i came across this story on the YoungTurks channel. How can the police & government officials sit idly by when rape is so prevalent in Dehli?? What are they waiting for? How would they react if it was their daughter, sister, wife or mother? It sickens me to think of the dismal future of this traumatized woman. The scum of the earth, lowest of the lowest, pieces of trash who committed this heinous crime deserve the death penalty. Rape IS NOT ok!!! These pigs needs harsher sentences, & the law makers need to do their jobs for a change. They don't get paid to simply show up at work. Men, YOU need to stand up against this too, you need to protect the women in your society. It takes a real man to stand up for a woman & a feeble excuse of a man to rape a woman. Wake up!! Something has to change. Speak up! Fight! Contact your local governments! Make them do the job that YOU the citizens PAY them to do!!

Incompetent Police by Sunny on 18 Dec 2012

What a shameful incident. Delhi is unsafe and there is no doubt about it. Delhi police is the worst in the world. Go out in the evening and you will see people drinking alcohol in the open and sometimes you will see policemen joining them in uniform. Best way to stay alive is keep your head down. We pay taxes and believe in the government to provide us with basic security and public facilities. Delhi is a gunda raj and worse than any crime struck village in india. Feel ashamed to call it the capital of India. Why cant we make people like Kiran Bedi the police commissioner or even the chief minister. Enough of incompetent Shiela Dixit. The best she can do is cancel the permit of a bus. Come on, two lives are ruined here , not lost yet. I pray for speedy recovery of both the victims.

Rape incidences by Chandramohan Shinde on 18 Dec 2012

Our country is ruled by toothless and spineless people who do not have will to impose severe punishments for heinous crimes. Police force has lost confidence of common man. Justice system is famous in giving bail rather than justice. People have lost hopes that justice will be done QUICKLY. As usual the system will wait and hope that the things will be forgotten with passage of time. People like me cannot do more than to sympathise with the victim. It is frustrating !

DELHI RAPE by T.S.JAYARAMAN on 18 Dec 2012

It is a great shame to see and hear the incident that too in the national capital. The culprits should be brought to book and maximum punishment to be given. If it involves police enquiry, courts etc., it will take a decade for punishment to be given and again bail also will be allowed. What a shame. If this happens to a high level minister will anybody keep silent.Shame on us.

Rape should be dealt with iron hand by Anoop R on 18 Dec 2012

The law should be made stricter against such heinous crime , we should go for some special law and also speedy trial of cases in fast track court . If needed special bill should be passed to make culprits accountable and given harsher punishment , at least life imprisonment .

Change the laws and forms of punishment by KD on 18 Dec 2012

It appears that perpetrators of such henious crimes have lost the fear of conventional forms of punishment. Arguably we may want to bring back some of the methods used in medevial times. And widely publicise the same. No amount of policing will help. The punishment itself must act as a deterrant. These kind of assailants are inhuman and do not deserve humane forms of trials.

Human worm! by Premkumar on 18 Dec 2012

Nothing is gonna change, Public outcry will diminish in a day or two and the rape will continue. When a Chiefminister says that all you need is Rs.4 per day to live in India you know how much they care for you. For the rulers you are nothing more than a worm.

A common man is living in this country in miserable conditions. A handful rich and strong people are abusing the power. This country has no future because of total degradation of moral values.

Where are the so called human rights activists. Do they come out only to defend Kasab and Afzal Guru. It is because of these in-human's right's canvessaers that lawlessness and contempt for law of the society is going unchalleged because they all know that pseudeo intelligentia will be there to defend these soundrels. i am really pained and ashamed to be a citizen of this country .when incidents happen like this really whether we are worthy for the democratic form of governance is the thought which runs through an normal indian citizen my sincere and heartfelt apologies to the two victims who have undergone this immense trauma for no fault of theirs .Those brutal animals responsible have done what any civilized soceity will deter to do. They should be given a punish ment which will act as a deterent in future. i feel not only the individuals but their family and friends are also having their share of responsiblity in the creation of these monsters. so the media should take the courage once the the fir is in place to publish the the photos of the family maembers and friends of these animals who were responsible. so in future all will act with resposibility in creation of good citizens

MoneyMatters!! by Sharat on 18 Dec 2012

I am not saying all women wrong wearing what they used to now a days, but looks does matter. I haven't seen any men wearing something which helps them to show their innerpart but i do see women wearing cloth not to conceal but to show.....like...see i have bigger balls inside....joy ride. We like sweets, non-veg food, ice creams etc much compared to dal-roti because dal-roti is common, what we are taking since our childhood, but sweets is not common, that we take everyday. So i mean to say here is that we haven't seen a lady with bare body, so its facinates us when we see a lady in western wear. Dress code must be in play while we witness a rape or molestation. Half is visible, lets browse what is well inside. India is a developing country in each & everypart compared to western. Our mind is still in 18th century but we project the other way.

Are we not responsible for such heinous crimes? by srkk on 18 Dec 2012

Spate of such heinous crimes in NCR, is offshoot of many things including the following-Most of these chartered buses are operated by high and mighty of our society(read political leaders, political office bearers, MLA's MP's -ex and current from govt as well as opposition, and police officials). These goondas are very handy for them in times of need- using force for intimidation, during election etc. They know that they can walk free with the help of their lords, in case an honest law and order official dares to take on them. They do not have fear of the police and indulkge in such mis- adventures and inflict tremendous injury(physical and mental) to innocent persons in the society. If at all anyone is have this fear they are law abiding citizens. These crimes need to be stopped forthwith. As such Delhi has been falling rapidly in its various rating on many counts being conducted by world organisations and very soon it would be named crime capital of the world

Tit for tat by Rakesh Sharma on 18 Dec 2012

The arrested men should be publically stoned to death. Their intestines should also be damaged in the same way as they did it to the girl. Their hands should be chopped off along with the genitals which raped the girl and took away her modesty. A publically organised justice as stated above will prevent others to take similar crime.

IP code can punish the rapist...! by MK on 18 Dec 2012

I have doubt that IP code can punish the goons and antisocials. The law is at large loose and rapist, terrorists, cheaters, goons are having safe haven that is the reason it multiplies day and night like in India.

Can we shift national capital out of Delhi and leave behind Sheila by Udai Singh on 18 Dec 2012

'BarkhaDutt & Vir Sanghvi worship Sheila & Sonia. With such public figures what can we expect. Sheila will win one more election, such are the people of Delhi. Shame Can we shift national capital out of Delhi and leave behind Sheila & Sonia''

rapists/molesters should be hanged by red indian on 18 Dec 2012

Rapists/molesters should be hanged. Is congress govt sleeping? Why doesn't it amend the law to give death penalty to rapists/molesters. These are the rarest of rarest crimes. A girl who is raped is never the same again for the rest of her life. I think they will amend the law if a woman minister or their kin is gang raped???

CONSULTANT by HARIHAR IYER on 18 Dec 2012

Ref: Story on Delhi Gang Rape I'm ashamed of being an Indian which traditionally afforded a higher status to women as 'shakti' but repeatedly violated by men, across the country, to a commodity to quench their lust. The recent Delhi rape case is a classic one - gang raped in a moving bus, passing through multiple police barricades (which proudly advertises 'for you,' 'with you,' and 'always' in late evening by any standard. It's so common to be raped in Delhi with the Prime Minister (whose party is headed by a woman, if you like) and a separate Chief Minister, again a woman, that one could conveniently come out with a calendar to tick off - rape / no-rape / day. In my opinion, Delhi should be renamed as 3M capital representing - Muscle power, Moolah (money power), and Mardanghi (manhood) - culminating in rapes - choose the day and time of your pick. All the so-called 'culprits' will go scot-free in a week's time through an archaic, stone-age, corrupt legal process (invented by the British in 1800s) by depositing INR 5,000 (Pound Sterling 55)as bail amount. Given our legal system (I just have one head - how many times can I hang it down?), this case will go on for the next 15 years in the lower courts. By then the evidences will be 'doctored' and 'file lost' processes only to free the culprits honourably. The rhetoric of 'stern action' will not stop. It's for public consumption knowing fully well that public memory is short. But what about the individual who has suffered? Would the government be so lethargic, lackadaisical, and uncaring if the daughter or grand-daughter of the Prime Minister or Delhi Chief Minister were to be gang-raped? Jai Hind ! Incredible India ! Please visit India. It's a tourist's paradise.
