New Delhi Delhi Police today invoked murder charges against the six men allegedly involved in the gangrape of a 23-year-old girl in a moving bus after she died in a Singapore hospital and decided to file the charge sheet in court on January 3.

Police said it will be their endeavour to ensure the "harshest punishment in the book" for the culprits.

"We hope to file the chargesheet by January 3, 2013. Section 302 of IPC, which is the penal section for murder, has been added in the case," Dharmendra Kumar, Special Commissioner of Police (Law and Order), said.

He said a Special Public Prosecutor of eminence has been appointed to conduct the trial in a Fast Track Court on a day-to-day basis. "It will be our endeavour to ensure the harshest punishment in the book to the culprits," he said.

The autopsy of the victim was done by a Singaporean Medical Team and the report will be made available to investigators at the earliest.

"In this moment of national grief following the loss of a young and innocent life to a barbaric crime, we appeal to members of public to stay calm and maintain peace.

"We, in Delhi Police, as citizens of this country are equally saddened, if not more. Our sympathy goes out to the bereaved family," he said.

Police had initially booked the six men under sections 307 (attempt to murder), 201 (destruction of evidence), 365 (kidnapping or abducting), 376 (2)(g) (gang rape), 377 (unnatural offences), 394 (hurting in committing robbery) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code.

The girl had boarded the bus, thinking it to be a legitimate public carriage, from Munirka but was attacked and gang-raped even as her male friend accompanying her tried to protect her. He was also injured in the incident.

The arrested persons are driver Ram Singh, his brother Mukesh, Akshay Thakur, Pavan and Vinay. The sixth person apprehended claimed that he is a minor and police have sought the court's permission to get a bone test to ascertain his age.

i really fear that people would again be afraid to give birth to a female child after seeing this incident.and why should they even give birth?? just to see their daughters being raped..!! this is red light for the entire country.the govt. should take some actions ratherr than tweeting around about the fake grief. why arent they taking action??just because she wasn't their daughter or sister..??or they know dat this public protest and candlelight marches are for few days..!! a new year and a new beginning..1!! this is what they are thinknig..!!has anyone imagined the pain that she suffered when her intestines were being damaged by a rusted rod..?? we are even afraid to take a small injection. where she beared the pain of getting her intstines damaged. the girl is named totally correct "amanat"... i really wish that her soul rests in peace and the accused should be treated in the same way as she suffered...

Time has come for the Prime minister to declare a state of emergency and invoke 'Defence of India Act' for the protection of our mothers, sisters and daughters against gang-rapists or other violent attacks. He has the mandate to move the President of India to be a signatory. All parties opposiing this action be made public so that come election time people exercise their value judgement. In the mean time apply 'Kasab rules' to those involved in this death. Testosterone charged youth roaming our streets need to to be warned that ,summary, death Penalty awaits rapists

Gender violence endemic and widespread in India by Shalini on 29 Dec 2012

Pornography has nothing to do with centuries of systematic daily violence against Indian women in the small towns and villages of India. Physical and verbal harassment in our cities has also been tolerated for decades but only now that it has become more brazen and brutal with gangs of men roaming the streets like wild animals going hunting for the "kill" has the urban middle class awakened to the grave danger our women are in as they go about their daily business. It is not just Delhi but every area of the country where a predatory mindset against women has spilled out into streets. We need a national conversation to acknowledge this and talk about meaningful solutions .

Culprits should be given harshest punishment by Aj on 29 Dec 2012

Those responsible should be given the harshest punishment possible. Someone should start an online petition and gain support from millions of people online agreeing with this sentiment and submit it to the indian politicians and authorities in the hope that this will add to the pressure on them to bring best justice for this lovely angel who died. The best way to get any solace right now is to do our bit to improve the system.
