Digvijaya Singh cautions against hawkish line on peace process with Pakistan

D K Singh

Posted: Jan 18, 2013 at 0031 hrs IST

Jaipur As the Congress prepares to address and respond to the public outrage over the recent brutal killing of Indian soldiers by Pakistani troops at its two-day Chintan Shivir starting in Jaipur on Friday, party general secretary Digvijaya Singh cautioned against taking a hawkish line on the peace process, stating that before taking any decision “geographical compulsion” should be borne in mind and also whether India wants “an enemy or a friendly neighbour”.

Slamming senior BJP leader Sushma Swaraj for her 10 heads-for-one head remark, Singh told The Indian Express, “It is unfortunate that some politicians are talking irresponsibly. Sushma Swaraj who is shadow PM of her party talks about 10 heads for one head. It may be good to be a hawk but a shadow PM should not make such irresponsible statements.”

He said whether peace talks should continue or not should be left to be decided by the government that is competent to deal with the issue and also to the defence forces.

“Geo-political situation has to be taken into account before we take any step. The PM has rightly said that there cannot be business as usual. It is a strong statement. Peace process was called off several times and resumed. It was a serious incident and it is highly condemnable but at the same time we cannot wish away our geographical compulsion. The issue is: Do we have an enemy or a friendly neighbour? Let all these issues be above divisive politics. In matters of national security, we should put up a united front and refrain from giving statements which reflect divisive politics,” said Singh.

Over the next two days, the Congress’ sub-committee on India and the World, headed by Anand Sharma, will elicit delegates’ views on foreign policy before harmonising them in its resolution on the subject.

Sources said while the document will comprehensively outline India’s foreign policy objectives, there would be special focus on the neighbourhood including Indo-Pak bilateral relations in the backdrop of Pakistan’s hostile action on the Line of Control, concerns about Afghanistan and Sino-Indian relations among others. The party document on India and the World is likely to underline how India has been constantly trying to engage Pakistan in the peace process and how “violent incidents” perpetrated by the neighbouring country could be “counter-productive”, said sources.

DS needs to study history by Prakash on 18 Jan 2013

DS is far away from the general public mood.He is not aware since he is out of touch of the Indian middle class and poor public. Also by now he should understqand that Pakistan will and can never be a friendly neighbour because it is a own declared Muslim state and not a secular state.DS should study history of India, of Muslim States and Islam as a religion before preaching others. The public perception of Congress party being a communal party is so strong that it will take many decades for them now to be back in power after the next election.Hinduism is the most secular religion and the Hindus don't tolerate communal preachings and actions in their society.

A Mere Indian by Satheesh on 18 Jan 2013

Peoples like Donky Singh does not have any value or respect for the 1.2 billion common Indian. They are always behind minority vote bank and appeasement. The Congress is directing all welfare schemes to the Minorities Only. Even the SC/ST people are sidelined, because still they are following Hindu/Indian culture. They are thinking protection and security needed only for their Madom and Prince. They are misusing the whole Government machinery includig Military facilities for this purpose. Remember We Indian/The Majority still sleeping, but we have left with No Other Way Only To Awake Before The CONGRESS Monster Finish the Very INDIA.

Irrelevant Comment Digvijay by Subodh on 18 Jan 2013

It is common knowledge that politician like Digvijay singh does not know what he is speaking.Out of 100 comments he made on different situations, 98% were irrelevant, useless and senseless. His, this latest comment just shows the bankruptcy of his mind. I advise home to read the Indian history from independence to present day carefully. He can keep on harking on geopolitical situations, but is he aware of half of the Kashmir gobbled by the Pakistanis, Kashmir problem, terrorism problem in India, Mumbai and sansad attack, serial bomb blasts, Kargil infiltration and dying of hundreds of Indian soldiers, disturbances at north- east Indian and numerous other incidences where hundreds of Indians men, women and kids were killed. It is surprising, he is still looking for his vote bank by talking softly for Pakistan and forgetting the wrath of whole country toward timidness and lack of strong will power shown time and again by leaders who are sitting on the top echelon.

Digvijaya Singh cautions against hawkish line on peace process with Pakistan by Syed Saulat Shere on 18 Jan 2013

I am certainly disappointed in your bloggers who show such demagoguery and such foul language in their opposition to Mr. Singh. And also, I am surprised why Indian Express allows such garbage to be published in this esteemed newspaper.

How to define pakistan as a friend by Veera on 18 Jan 2013

Friend and enemy are antonyms. Intent, attitude and affection decide if one is a friend or enemy. While chance should be given for anybody to mend his ways, the question of how many chances does pakistan deserve arises. Is it intelligent expect that somebody who is belligerent as usual will repent and reform? A change in attitude will determine if there will be a change in direction or not. There cannot be a change in direction if army remains the center of the relationship. The question is does Pakistan do this to China its friend?. How does it behave with Afganistan its weaker neighbor? How does pakistan react to ally being favourable to india and how how US deals by doling a few extras to keep Pakistan happy. In summary, there is no motivation for Pakistan in the near future to become India's friend. So it is better to contain the damage , draw clear rules for engagement and relation.

Nishan-e-Imtiaz by ASHWINI KUMAR on 18 Jan 2013

I think Digvijay Singh, Manish Tiwari and Mulayam Singh are in a tough competition aiming for Nishan-e-Imtiaz. They need to do one more thing for this, though - circumcision.

Beggar's wealth! by Prasad on 18 Jan 2013

Dear Mr DV Singh: Peace should always be brokered on equal grounds if not forced! A peace process through ignoring self-pride is like a beggar's wealth! It has no respect and is extremely temporary. That is the reason many netizens want Indian govt. to take a a very tough line after their beloved army persons were murdered and beheaded. Paki army has no respectable character - it's like a tribe - and very religious. The many incidents of beheading proves that. We have to open our eyes and respect citizens' justified feelings. We also should not at opposition political party statements in a biased manner. There is no clear way to distinguish if the issue is being politicized when they are echoing the citizens' voice. At least, finally, the PM spoke in stern voice. That's a ve development. Politicians like you should not frequently cross the line by issuing unnecessary statement which are against the people's voice. Doesn't the ruling party have any intellectual team to give guidance?

This person never talks anything sensible by rocky on 18 Jan 2013

I am really amazed how diggi is surviving in politics. I don't think anybody takes him seriously. I have never heard any serious comment from this person.

Digvijay Singh on our neighbours by Chetan S on 18 Jan 2013

We have been harping for peace but they keep back stabbing. How can you have such friends? Mr. Digvijay seems to talk what he only understands.... It is better to have a known enemy rather than an unfaithful friend ! Pakistan understands the language of cutting heads... so we too should answer them in the same language. I wonder if some one says something in Greek to a person who knows only Hindi... what would he understand and what would he reply......

The Congress has not learnt its lessons. We are weary of hearing his voice and his thoughts. Can the media stop covering his utterances.

Questions for Digvijay by JB on 18 Jan 2013

Mr. Digvijay Singh does not have the occasion to answer questions; he only engages in monologues. However one hopes he will address the following questions: what has his government been doing all these years and what has been the result? If a gruesome act like beheading of an Indian jawan takes place how would he term it: a friendly act, just an incident or a deliberate act of war to provoke and to incite and would he concede that the act is the result of or in spite of all that his government has been doing? He may also try to answer who could have committed this ghastly act if not the Pakistani soldier, or does he believe that border areas are left open by the Pakistani army for non state actors (who only he and his comrades believe, exist)to visit at will to commit any act of their choice?
