Digvijay slams BJP, says it wants 100% retail FDI when in power, otherwise not

Raghogarh Taking on the BJP for criticising the UPA government's decision of FDI in retail and fuel price hike, Congress general secretary Digvijay Singh charged the opposition with adopting double standards over issues when in power and outside it.

"When the BJP is in power, it wants 100 per cent FDI, but when it comes to Opposition, it opposes this," Singh told reporters here last evening.

Similarly, the BJP prices petroleum as per market needs when in power and opposes the same when in Opposition, he said.

The FDI is being opposed only by those who are in favour of middlemen, Digvijay said while claiming that the Centre's move would help both farmers and consumers.

"A state government which does not want FDI is free to do so," he said while calling it strange that Left parties were opposing FDI as it has been effected in China for last 10 years.

Doubting the credibility of the CAG, he said former CAG T N Chaturvedi had questioned the quality and manner of purchase of Bofors guns, successfully used in the Kargil war.

Chaturvedi later contested elections on a BJP ticket and went on to become a Governor, Singh said.

The Congress general secretary alleged that after present CAG Vinod Rai had been honoured by some foreign media, he started describing as wrong the 2G and coal block allocations.

However, he did not elaborate on the statement.

He said it was strange that the CAG had not looked into coal block allocations during the NDA rule and alleged that the CAG report had been "leaked" to the media even before it was presented in Parliament.

If such a thing happens with the budget, the Finance Minister has to resign, he quipped.

The UPA government was ready for any discussion in Parliament but the BJP did not want the House to run, he said, adding that all political parties must allow Parliament and Assemblies to function, as obstructing their business was not good in a democracy.

Meanwhile, with Assembly elections due in Gujarat later this year, Digvijay described Chief Minister Narendra Modi as a "regional leader" while terming Congress's Rahul Gandhi as a "national leader". The Congress leaders in Gujarat are enough to take on Modi, he added.

On the recent Jal Satyagraha in Madhya Pradesh, Singh said the state government should have accepted the demands earlier, instead of allowing it to go on 17 days.

Prices of super markets by S.N.Iyer on 17 Sep 2012

It is rather disturbing that the farmers are not being paid by the big supermarket owners! In Bangalore my experience has been that the Govt Coop which sells veggies supposedly at "no profit, no loss" basis is 20-25% higher than most supermarkets!

Digvijay Singh may be right about BJP. But that does not explain his rationale for allowing handing over the control of retail trade. Not even the prime minister has explained the rationale. Is maintaining supply chains such an expensive and technologically difficult thing that it needs foreign capital? Can the Congress secretary inform us when the Congress Working Committee or AICC discussed the issue? What will his government do if he hands over 60% of the country's economy to foreign capital? How much of capital formation shifts to the Wall Street. Ultimately when does he propose to out source the running of parliament and the defense of the country.

FDI and East India Company by Ashok on 17 Sep 2012

If you read history, East India could come inntothe Country, because we were hopeless , in terms of tactics, and Technology in War. They were able to defeat 50000 soldiers with a mere 2000 soldiers. The English were also able to influence Chinese to grant them special trading terms following the Opium Wars, INspite of this they are not afraid of Walmarts.WE seems to be having a defeatists attitude. When Sanjay Gandhi forced the entry of Maruti-there was a hu and cry. With their entry,we are now the hub of Automobile. Do not be afraid, we will learn and declare war on the western societies, as the Chinese done.

DOUBLE STANDARD OF BJP by Pradeep on 17 Sep 2012

BJP is party of opportunits. Their men do corruption, kill innocents in the name of religion, they have some justificatin always. Please understand the requirement of Global economy. Understand that Indians are allowed to open anything in US or Europe or Middle East or South East Asia and why not we allow others also invest in India. If you are so self centered and lack vision, the Central govt is giving you the option to each State within India either go or the Global market situation or be IGNORANT of what is happening around the world and be UNDER DEVELOPED(allowing to be looted by a chain of middle Men, giving less to the Farmers and manufacturers, thereby having continued unemployment and poverty).

Modern East India Companies. by N.R.Singh on 17 Sep 2012

Everybody knows what one East India Company did to India. This time they will be coming in hordes. The then rulers of India were naive and simple and hence could not counter the mechanization of the East India Company. This time around they will find ready collaborators and companions in crime of looting and subjugating India.

The Return of the Empire by sur pars on 17 Sep 2012

FDI is a backdoor for the return of Colonisations and slavery for India's peoples who are easily divisable on relgious, caste, etc. Indians get ready to be enlsaved again by the EAST INDIA COMPANY now returning as WALMART and MOSANTO who will buy out Indian companies from their owners at double the share prices and then treble the prices of the products later and also ensuring most food and manufacturing done where it is cheapest etc in China and USA for agriculture.

FDI wont be beneficial to Farmers at all ....recent examples by Swap on 17 Sep 2012

Yesterday i was at Daund Taluka(Pune) meeting some of the farmers there and i cam to know from them this fact : TATA , Reliance and Pantaloons had setup their offices in Daund to procure vegies . Sent their agents who charged 10% to farmers for sale of their goods to these companies . Farmers were happy that their produce was sold immediately except for the 10% commission . Payments were not made to the farmers for long time and finally when farmers demanded for money they were told they can instead take electronic gadgets from these companies , which would be exchanged for cash later . Finally all farmers stopped giving to these companies after having huge losses . So when foreign companies come to India few things will happen : They will reduce the cost of commodities by exploiting the farmers as i have told ,they may give loans (for GM crops n pesticides) as well to farmers and when debt is unpaid they will confiscate farmers lands (with support from government) .
