Post the sentence, police had to resort to tear gas shelling because protesters started pelting stones and crude bombs inside the court premises.
Special CBI Judge Vinod Kumar, who last week had convicted the Chautalas and 53 others, including two IAS officers, for corruption in a teachers' recruitment scam and other charges, today handed them varying jail terms.
78-year-old Chautala senior, a four-time former Chief Minister, and his son 51-year-old Ajay Chautala are both sitting MLAs and could stand disqualified from contesting the assembly elections next year if their conviction is not stayed by a higher court.
Under the Representation of the People Act, a person convicted of any offence and sentenced to more than two years imprisonment shall be disqualified from the date of conviction and for a further period of six years after his release.
Unfazed by the violence outside, the judge read out the order of sentencing as Chautala's supporters thronged the court complex threw stones and crude bombs and clashed with police who resorted to lathi charge and use of tear gas in a bid to restore order.
The senior Chautala was not present in the court because of his hospitalisation after being taken into custody last week, his son and all the other convicts were present in the court.
Apart from the Chautalas, the court has awarded ten years imprisonment to Sanjiv Kumar, the then Director of Primary Education, Chautala's former Officer on Special Duty Vidya Dhar, both IAS officers, and political advisor to the then Haryana CM Sher Singh Badshami, curently a sitting MLA.
All the 55 convicts have been convicted and sentenced under sections 120B(criminal conspiracy) , 418(cheating), 467(forgery), 471 (using forged documents as genuine) of the IPC and sections 13 (1) (d) and 13 (2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
Apart from the five main accused, four others including a woman have been awarded 10 years jail term, one has been given five years and the rest 45 given four years sentence.
Earlier in the morning, much before the court was to pronounce the sentence, hundreds of supporters of Indian National Lok Dal today clashed with police which used batons and teargas to control them outside the court where barricades were set up to prevent them from entering.
The supporters hurled bottles filled with flammable spirits into the court complex but none was injured.
The supporters had gathered outside the complex in the early hours and clashed with police after it prevented them from entering the court complex. The police used batons and teargas to control the supporters.
Security has been tightened around the complex and entry has been restricted in the court. The court work was also affected and lawyers faced problems getting in.
On January 16, the court had held 78-year-old Om Prakash Chautala, his son Ajay Chautala and 53 others guilty of illegally recruiting 3,206 junior basic trained (JBT) teachers in the state in 2000.
Apart from the five main accused, the four others who were sentenced to 10 years imprisonment are Durga Dutt Pradhan, Bani Singh, Daya Saini and Madan Lal Kalra.
Five years imprisonment was handed down to Pushkar Mal Verma.
Earlier in the day, District Judge S K Sarvaria, several judges and senior police officers went around the court complex to inspect security and to see what can be done to manage the welling crowd outside the Rohini court.
The court on January 16, while convicting all the 55 accused in the case of illegal recruitment of 3,206 junior basic trained teachers, had held Chautala senior as the "main conspirator".
The court had relied on the testimony of Sanjiv Kumar who initially was a whistle blower but in the CBI probe that followed he was found to be involved in the scam.
The CBI had filed its charge sheet in a Delhi court after its probe established that a conspiracy on making second lists was hatched at Haryana Bhawan here by calling the chairpersons and members of the district-level selection committees of 18 districts.
They were also called at a guest house in Chandigarh, where the modalities were worked out, it had said.
The court had said that first IAS officer R P Chander (CBI witness), who was the then Director of Primary Education, had given a proposal for declaring the results of successful candidates in April 2000, but he was transferred on the next day itself.
Subsequently, IAS officer Rajni Shekri Sibal (CBI witness), was brought in at Chander's place and she was asked by accused Badshami and Vidya Dhar to change the award lists in the presence of Ajay Chautala, it had said.

I cannot understand why Indians are supporting a person so clearaly convicted of polluting the system and corruption. It is a rare case that happens in India that anyone in power is convicted. And now this opposition. I would have thought the public would support the move to cleanse the system!! Can anyone make sense of this to me?
Good TO see corrupt Politicians Brought to justice But regret to note that this seems like selective action for political gain As many cases are pending against politicians without progress in investigation or court orders!!
This is a good step to convict the under corruption and send them to jail,CBI/ govt. should use same yardstick for gadkari,Vadra, Mayawati, mulayam lalu and all other netas who have looted this country. Probably they wont be touched because they are toeing the line of the masters. What a shame the way power is misused and used selectively.
All corrupts to note that one day they will get similar treatment from judiciary. Kannon ke haath bahut lambe hote hain.
All over the nation every where be it Sales Tax,Exise Taxes, CBI,Contractors, every where and I mean every where !!!! Minister, bureaucrat even Nationalized Bank Employees. GOD KNOWS WHAT ARE THE FUTURE OF THIS POOR NATION BECAUSE OF THESE POLITICAL LOOTERS.
Great happening,Good ray of hope for people.May God help nationalist citizens to protect countrymen specially Hariyana's women from Kope of Khap also
He was junior when he committed the scam- and asked to serve jail sentence when he is a senior citizen, should be respected,10 yrs is too long a period to stay in 2x4 cell,he was given "Z" security, now all looting, breaking, who will bear the cost,Ghotala claims - he has no harm in going to jail for he was not alone, all my co partners has to come and will produce WHITE PAPER, to prove he is not guilty!!! UPA - TOE LINE BEING ELECTION YEAR -2014? come on sufficient you politicians hv looted this nation a lot cool your heals behind bars the nation sake as you have fought for the nation.wow!!!
JAIL TO CHAUTALA FAMILY AND 2 IAS OFFICERS WITH 54 OTHERS AND PUBLIC SUPPORT FOR THEM. People should celebrate the day as it is the turning point in the history of Indian politics. Now politicians will think twice whether to make money on sly or not. Instead these foolish people launch agitation to support these corrupt people. Yes we deserve such thieves only to rule as as it has been proved repeatedly by people themselves. Kalmadi was welcomed in Pune with fire crackers and distribution of sweets after he got the bail. So was the case with Karunanidhi family. Shame India shame , a big shame. I am very happy that such a judgement has come and there should be no provision of appeal in such cases as these corrupt people just file a appeal by spending few thousands only and again sleep peacefully for a decade.
Richest day for INDIAN JUDICIARY, and a historical lesson for those who play with their DUTIES.
Chautalas have got what they sow, was in fact dirtier. They not only made money misusing position as CM of senior one also used their mussal power to cuff off money from traders & factory owners. A case of Karnal is well known, in which industrialist had taken to shift his factory out off Haryana, but for the intervention of than PM matter was sorted out by paying smaller amount of money to Chautals. They only deserve this kind punishment or more. Delhi & Haryana Police should take all steps to prevent any trouble their supporters can make, as trailer has already been shown by goonda elements of that party. In fact OP & his sons have blackened their father & G. father Ch. Devi Lal name.
All such corrupt VIP's can be taught a lesson only by the indian judiciary . All pending cases should be taken up on afast track & be completed before the oncoming elections , so that next time we are able to get a clean govt .
What about 2G scam and bofors and black money stashed away. it has become habit of ruling class to pin down the opposition parties in case they do not toe their line of action. It happened at the time of election of president when hc gave clean chit to mayawati. With these incidents aam aadmi has no knowledge and no source to know the reality. there have been t housand of scams which have remained unresolved and only when elections near the same are used to critisize the opponents than resolving them in totality. In other words these are nothing but dramas enacted by political parties and when their turn comes they start enjoying powers. NOTHING NEW
You are right sir. They had used CBI several times as there weapon to wipe out opposition. CBI should be a independent body if we want to even begin on cleaning the political crap in this country.
Our politicians get elected with money/muzzle power, then loot as much as possible and when subjected to judicial scrutiny, they hire Goondas/hooligans to intimidate honest Judges.Shame on our democracy,is this what our freedom fighters dreamed? There is no room to show mercy on Choutalas,Raja,Kalmadi,Kannimodi and etc the list is long.Hope soon our prisons will be full of criminals among politicians.
i feel the sentence should be harsher. cheating poor people and the nation is a dirty crime
My ancestors will be proud, as I have lived up to the family name.
