Aditi, a first-year student of English (Hon) at South Kolkata Girls College, had gone for a joyride with her friends on Friday evening. Her family lodged a missing complaint with the police at Tiljala on the same night after she did not return home. On Saturday, the family and the police came to know from her friends that Aditi was at Ruby Hospital in a critical condition. The hospital authorities failed to say who brought Aditi to the hospital. They said that she was immediately admitted to the ICU as her condition was critical. According to doctors, Aditi was wet and had water in her stomach, which made it seem that she had drowned.
Aditi’s family has accused her friend, Gyanjeet Path, of killing her. According to them, she had left for a joyride with four of her friends, Gyanjeet being one of them. With no trace of Gyanjeet, the family said that he was behind Aditi’s “murder”. Her friends reportedly told the police that the vehicle in which Aditi, Gyanjeet and two of her friends were travelling met with an accident and she fell into a canal in Sonarpur where she reportedly drowned.
Aditi’s mother Sangeeta Ghatak, however, said that her daughter could swim and hence, could not have drowned. “How is it that her friends did not get hurt?” she said, adding that she got threat calls from Gyanjeet’s family asking her to withdraw the case.
When the police went to Gyanjeet’s house, they found it locked.
Officials at Tiljala police station said that they have forwarded the missing complaint to Sonarpur police station since the accident reportedly took place at Kheyada area there. “We are investigating the matter. Till now, no murder case has been lodged by the victim’s family,” said Sujit Chakraborty, Officer in-Charge of Tiljala police station.
