Gadkari won’t resign, but new term in doubt

New Delhi Unfazed by allegations of wrongdoings in his business dealings, Nitin Gadkari appears unlikely to tender his resignation as the BJP president. In fact, the BJP on Thursday indicated that he will continue to discharge his responsibility.

“All programmes will continue as per schedule,” BJP spokesperson Nirmala Sitharaman asserted on Thursday.

However, party sources admitted that the allegations may cast a shadow on his second term as the party president with the current term set to expire by the end of the year.

Even as the party is in the process of assessing the potential fallout of carrying on with a party president battling allegations of wrongdoings in the backdrop of BJP’s high-pitch anti-corruption campaign against the government, party leaders have decided to make a virtue out of Gadkari’s offer to face probe. This came to fore on Thursday during a rally in Himachal Pradesh where party leader Sushma Swaraj attacked the Congress alleging that the ruling party runs away from probe while Gadkari has volunteered for probe.

“When Congress leaders’ faces were blackened, they decided to malign us and accused our president. But he did not sit at home. He faced the media alone and replied to all charges made against him. He is the only leader to have volunteered for a probe into the allegations against him from any agency, even though these agencies are controlled by them (government)...He is confident that he will not be found guilty,” she said at a rally in Sundernagar.

However, party leaders admitted that the BJP will have to weigh the consequences of continuing with Gadkari as the next president leading the party to Lok Sabha elections where the party will go hammer and tongs against the Congress on the clutch of alleged corruption in the CWG, 2G, coal block allocations. Even if the party opinion goes against Gadkari, he is likely to be allowed to complete his current term. Gadkari’s hope lies in coming out clean in front of party top brass and bank on the internal rivalry among the Delhi-based leaders.

SHUSHMA TAMASHA by S RAMJI on 26 Oct 2012

Sushma says congress has made the allegations. i have been following of the reporting of the events and never found any congress leader making the charges. Its mostly the newschannels that have come out with all details and frauds committed by Gadgari. Why are newsmen not asking Sushma whether her driver, baker, cook, servant and astrologer are directors on companies promoted by her or her family members. we should ask this question to all BJP leaders- we will atleast know that these politicians have very powerful drivers???
