In a shocking incident, a 23-year-old para-medical student travelling in a bus along with her male friend was allegedly gang-raped by four men inside the moving vehicle and they were thrown out after being brutally assaulted with an iron rod.
The victim, who hails from Uttarakhand and pursues the course in the hill state, is in a critical condition at the Safdarjung Hospital where she was rushed along with her friend late last night after the incident which sparked outrage.
Both the girl and her male friend, who had boarded the chartered bus with tinted glass windows from Munirka in south Delhi around 9.45 PM to Palam, were thrashed badly with an iron rod by the men after the two resisted before they were dumped on the road side near Mahipalpur flyover, police said today.
Police have identified four people, who allegedly raped the girl, and have already prepared sketches of two of them.
Police also released CCTV footage of the suspected bus with an appeal to the public to help them locate the vehicle.
Chhaya Sharma, Deputy Commissioner of Police, South, told reporters, that both the girl and boy had "put up a fight" with the men. The bus had tinted glass and was not in regular commercial service.
"When they boarded the bus, there were a few other men as well in the vehicle.... As of now, we can confirm the involvement of four men," she said.
She said police came to know of the incident after they were dumped near Mahipalpur flyover. They were rushed to AIIMS from where the girl was shifted to Safdarjung Hospital.
Though Sharma refused to discuss the condition of the girl, doctors at the Safdarjung Hospital said she was in a "critical state".
Doctors said the girl suffered head injuries and was seriously wounded in the face as well. She is being treated at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
The girl, who studies in a college in Dehra Dun, is in the capital for her internship.
Stung by accusations that over a decade of her rule has not made Delhi city safe for its women, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Monday promised a crackdown.
Though police said they have not yet identified the bus in which the incident took place, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said the permit of the bus has been cancelled by the Transport Department.
She also said necessary action would be taken to ensure such incidents don't happen in the future.
"I have been told by transport department that their licence has been cancelled. We will take all the necessary measures to ensure that such incidents don't happen," she said.
Condemning the incident, NCW chairperson Mamata Sharma said: "Such incidents are increasing in Delhi. Police and government should be really alert....We will get an inquiry done and will also enquire with police as to what action has been taken so far."
Describing the incident as 'shocking', Delhi Women and Child Development Minister Kiran Walia said that government would seriously work on installing CCTV cameras inside buses.
"This is shocking incident. I hope that the guilty are punished for the heinous crime," she said.
Accusing the government of handling the law and order matter "carelessly", BJP spokesperson Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said such incidents take place regularly but they are neither taken seriously by the Home Ministry nor by the police.
"This incident will be replaced with another incident after few days. I believe that Delhi's law and order and security issues are handled carelessly by the government," Naqvi said.
Senior BJP leader V.K. Malhotra on his part lashed out at the Congress Government over the untoward incident, and questioned as to why no action has been initiated so far.
"Delhi has once again been shamed. It is being repeatedly said now that Delhi has become the rape capital. When we used to talk about providing safety to the feminine gender, then it was said that women here are safe," said Malhotra.
"Sheila Dikshit is the Chief Minister, Sonia Gandhi is there in the Centre, Krishna Tirath is a Minister, there is National Commission, but despite all these cases of rape against the women are on the rise in Delhi. Nothing can be more ashamed than a case that the rape has been done in a moving bus. Why was action not initiated?" he asked.
Rape reaction: Delhi buses to come with CCTV cameras
In the wake of a widespread outrage over the gang rape and brutal assault of a 23-year-old para-medical student in a bus, Delhi government today said it would install CCTV cameras inside the buses to ensure safety of women passengers.
"This is a shocking incident. I hope that the guilty are punished for the heinous crime. The Delhi government would now seriously work on installing CCTV cameras inside the buses," Women and Child Welfare Minister Kiran Walia said.
The victim, who pursues the course in Uttarakhand and is in the capital for her internship, is in a "critical condition" at the Safdarjung Hospital where she was rushed late last night after the crime which sparked outrage.

Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said government would take all necessary steps to ensure that such incidents do not recur.
"I have been told by transport department that their licence has been cancelled. We will take all the necessary measures to ensure that such incidents don't happen," she said.
Delhi Transport department had planned to install CCTV cameras in all its buses long back but it is yet to be implemented.
Asked whether government was also planning to make it mandatory for installing CCTV cameras in private buses, an official in the Women and Child Welfare department said government was considering it.

kill this kind of bloodly animals............government should punish them severely......one innocient girls life should be replaced 6 bloodly animals.........................kill them....if u punish them severly or crime rate will icrease.................If THER IS NO SECURITY FOR INDIAN WOMEN MEANS.....THEY WILL MARRY OTHER NATION MENS AND MOVE AWAY TO SAUDHI,AMERICA ETC...............SAVE THE WOMAN....SAVE INDIA.........GIVE RESPECT TO WOMAN....
my opinion is not to throw the gang to the prison. because we have to kill the stupid cultural gang.not the government or police etc. we the people have to kill them in public road.first cut their hands first, then legs, ears, etc and kill them very cruely.
The victims should be punished very severely . Government should take a serious action soon so that no one else should even think of committing any crime like this.
Since we can't trust anyone anymore. Neither the Govt nor police...I suggest make all girls learn Karate. From school.Make it compulsary. There shld be no excuses entertained at all.All women should carry Pepper sprays with them at all times. When no one is there to save me..I shld learn to save myself. As I am the one who faces the trauma,I shld learn to attack back.

India is heading to a wrong direction. People lost their faith on political and judiciary systems. Powerful people are influencing everywhere and people are not getting any justice. I dont blame a single party, all parties are to be blamed for this situation. Rapes are happening all over the country & in all states, but, only a few are reported.. Fellow citizen - just think for a moment, where is our country is heading to? Is it too late to act?
First and foremost, I want to know why the police are hiding the criminals face, we deserve to see their faces, so everyone is aware of these evil men that roam around our country. Secondly, when the minor has committed a serious CRIME like this, I certainly do not agree on the age factor for him to be punished. He knew what he was doing, so I strongly suggest that in the rarest of rare case, this minor should not be tried in the juvenile court but be punished in the same manner as the other rapists.
Our country is independent since 1947, but we, the women are still fighting for our basic rights. I feel Really proud to be an Indian. What's the use for supreme scientific researches in this country, where every citizen don't even know what is humanity? We need strict and fast rules and punishments against such inhuman acts like rape. And we need Indian govt. to take steps to make sure that every grown up Indian at least understands what is humanity and what is brutality. I want an Indian child to be a good human being first, and then a doctor or a farmer or a scientist or a labourer.
Come on guys wake up now.We girls really cannot tallerate all thee things now.....wake up and please behavelike a human being..kal jab tumhare betiyan hongi tab kya chahoge tum log...jo lag aaj aisa sochte bhi hain ladkiyon k bare meoin meri dil se baddua hai us har insan k liye ki bhagwan us har insan ki biwiyon k sath ye karvaye tab unhe shayd ye pata chal jaye ki ye dard kya hota hai..or hamari govt. in ladko k sath kya karne vali hai....kuch nhi...par agar us justice ki seat pe baithne vale insam ko thodi si bhi sharam ho na to in logo ko fasi de dena....ya phir in kutto ko hum ladkiyon k beech fake dena...hum inhe batayenge ki rape kya hota hai....andv what is the true definition of rape....plz koi bhi ye na bhoole ki jab ek ladki bigadne pe atti hai na to sab bhool jati hai or uske dil ki courtesy bhi khatm ho jati hai....is se daro aisa na ho iss desh ki har ladki k dil ki courtesy khatm ho9n jaye....or ladke jinda na bachein.
It is indeed sad to see some ultra feminists and male chauvinists have used this horrible incidence to make a fight between the genders. Whenever there is such an horrific incidence the ultra feminists storm everywhere and shout their lungs out to make all the laws more and more barbaric and ultra feminist. Some even advocate mob lynching behaviour, killing/hanging without trial, importing words like male chauvinist pigs from US and stereotyping all men in that category. The same day two men were looted and killed in NCR by group of goons, but forget national debate, even the justice wont be served, why ? because they belonged to an infamous gender ? What about millions of men suffering abuse of draconian laws like 498a/dv in hands of vicious women and finding no recourse in law or any echo in public sentiment ..and are forced to commit suicide ? Let me see how they abuse me for this reality filled comment ....
YOUR entire post was a gender war. You're contradicting yourself & trying to use crimes against men to justify rape??? Don't confuse the issue, save your male superiority or "victim" rants for another day. We're here to talk about violence against WOMEN. If women won't stand up for women who will?? Closing your eyes to the pressing issue of rapes in Dehli will not make them disappear. Time to wake up & be more proactive. If you don't have anything substantial to write, save your spewing on gender wars for a more appropriate article.
There is another part of the story that is never mentioned in Indian media. There is a huge market in Bombay for luring and trapping females who are sold into brothels. These females are not natives of Bombay, but from other parts of India who fall into the trap. The civil administration is quite aware of this. Many years ago, a young girl from the South was tricked by a taxi driver and sold into the trade. However, she managed to inform her whereabouts to her family back home after a few months. When the family contacted the then Bombay City Civil Commissioner, he made enquiry and found the girl. However when the family was being taken to the place to take charge of the female, they were thus cautioned by the Commissioner: You will find other girls begging you to save them. You should not mind them. Simply take you girl and go away. This Bombay. All this things happens here! This news report came in Indian Express many years ago one day. There was no mention of it again.
The city folks call themselves modern, literate, scientific but lead their lives in the most dumb and slavish manner. Nobody is realizing that the information gathered in our mind through our sense perceptions, affect our thought process which is the key which leads an individual's actions. Due to the unfortunate conspiracy of media be it print, electronic, T.V, VULGARITY is being promoted through it, to promote individual animal like impulsive behavior. People are not using their mind that the specie human being is superior only if it uses its brains in the right way, if you think that impulsive behavior is what makes human beings most superior among all living beings think again ? If one observes carefully the MNCs worldwide are conspiring to break the institution of family culture by promoting wrong notion of individuality, which is nothing but promoting mental corruption, so that the individual is misguided and becomes a regular addict of their commodities. Just carefully pay attention as to what an individual gets to learn from vulgar movies/shows ? These movie stars or any individual promoting vulgarity tend to lead you towards sense slavery. Those who realize this bitter truth sooner and also enlighten others around them are lucky. As we all know that peace can never come by building weapons, it can only come by every individual practicing non-violence, similarly keeping the mind with healthy thoughts will lead to a good family, a good society, a good country and in turn a good global community. "Truth does not pays homage to any society ancient or modern, it is the society that has to pay homage to truth or else become extinct... " - Swami Vivekananda.
Really unfortunate for India who echoes big big words for women empowerment and security. If a so called Judiciary is there then the girl should get justice soon as this will treat as an example for the rapists for near future. It is not the first case indeed Delhi has witnessed many such brutal cases but justice is given to countable only.So leaders should expedite the total matter and the criminals who are doing such deeds should hang till death and should treat as an animal.
It reflects the inability of Congress to rule. Shiela should resign at once, owning responsibility to provide security. It is high time she resigns and take with her ,the Italian lady. Both are thoroughlly useless.
I would hold parents, teachers and the society responsible for such incidents. Improper upbringing, irresponsible parenting and lackadaisical attitude of the society towards shaping the character of the growing children are bound to bring forth such unsocial elements. Religions also are responsible because it has been unable to take care of the morals of its followers. I am sure that these men were brought forth into this world as unwanted children. The parents created them while indulging in sex only for the sake of pleasure. The parents might have hated them since birth. They grew up hating their own existence. They hated their own mothers. This hatred is now manifesting in the hatred for other women. They are pouring this hatred out of their homes by raping other women. Does anyone think cc cameras can take care of this tendency? We need a great social reform to put the society on a right track. If we continue we sleep over the problem, then women in the society will never be safe.
It is important to address what you did. We always punish the wrongdoers and not the worngdoings. Something internal can prevent these tendencies and for that we need the top IIians, doctors, engineers, actorsa nd public figures to say it ALOUD. Common men like you and me are barely heard in a crowd. I am glad you see that there is a bigger issue than just RAPE here. You made the most sense.

All the state governments other than Delhi should issue a warning to the public not to travel/go to delhi as it belongs only to politicians/ looters.Shame shame
This is one of the most brutal crimes in recent times. Its hurts to read this news. I am not sure that things are going to change in Delhi (and for that matter, in other parts of India) as we are living in an age of corruption in all walks of life. Its a shame to our Indian society collectively and we need to "fix" people who say that women have to be considerate about what they wear and they somehow "invite" lewd comments and rapes. There should be a death penalty or chopping of limbs atleast for rape to instill some fear in these inhuman cowards, however it still will be too little a consolation for the victims.
The culprit should be hang publicly. They are no less then a terrorist
This is so brutal and sad. It is a shame for the entire country and its leaders. The true rise of India is not about money but safe and secure living for its citizens. I am happy I left this city and the country and will never consider going back to India for the simple fact that human dignity and life is simply worthless out there. Geeta
Geeta, Country is not bad but because of our Politicians these things are happening. If Politicians would have been good , they would have given Death sentence to such kind of rapists.
I totally agree with you. A chill runs down my spine imagining myself living in Delhi. I feel far more secure away from the country I was born in.
I know it a shame for us, because of some morons all india's image is affected .... but blaming and abusing our own country ,thats exaclty our problem insteat of solving out we always says some bad word and get our self aside, after all its our country our home , clean it dont blame it ,,and people like you who leave there own country and abuse it says bad about your own country ,i think its totally wrong .
Selfish and timid public does not come to the aid of victims and does not even come foward as witness, neither the school principal nor the parents can reprimand the children for good social behaviour as any such action will be a criminal act police for political reason has been demoralised to take tough action against even proclaimed goondas esp after what happened to their overzealous friends in punjab and gujrat and protection to even death sentence awarded criminals by the govt Under the circumstances keep your mobiles in use never board a bus or taxi without giving its number to any of your friends , avoid late hours except in groups , get taxi from recognised source or van from your call centre or known radiotaxi , think twce if you cannot afford one . get paid taxi fro terminal or bus stands , HELP a person in distress and donot be a mute spectator to crime let people be more aggressive not passive onlookers , Frequently announced prizes to brave who come for help
i thk that every gal or guy should go out with something to protect urself.i hope ,police soon catch these four gunda.if not catch its really shame.n u,how can u say like, its her fault.she is with one guy also fite with four .its happen to ur family n somebody say like this how u felt.thik like that.whtver u say or do first thik if its happen to u;how u felt.if ur human..
India is a failed state. Laws do not work here. Courts have no clue what is going on in the society. Police move only with bribes. Parents just produce children like rats and do not provide value education. Welcome to reality.
i just pity that poor girl...and what about that culprit....in worse to worse condition what will happen..would be asked to pay some amount and stay in station for 1 or 2 nights and them he'll be back to his life. And we, have got a news to discus over after 2-3 days we'll also forget the case, the pain, the sympathy, the anger and the culprit. And dear Mango People try and understand this heinous act does not have any caste, creed, party or any language. It happened when there was is BJP, and it happening now also...so please stop blaming the government in action. We need a strong action and a permanent one...and to be implemented as soon as possible. And that culprit should be castrated to death...should be an example.
This is being surely understood that the government should show no mercy on culprits.Public should come forward for the identification. It becomes a moral responsibility of citizens of Delhi to come forward with all the courage and to fight against this.
