Chandigarh The Haryana Police on Wednesday arrested two residents of Nimbri village in Panipat district for the murder of village sarpanch Rajbir Malik, whose body was found abandoned on October 6. Those arrested have been identified as Praveen and Monu.

Around 15 years ago, Praveen’s sister was raped and subsequently murdered allegedly by Malik’s relatives. Praveen and Monu, during interrogation, have told the police that Rajbir (35) used to tease them saying that they would never be able to harm him, despite knowing what happened with their sister.

“On October 5, Praveen and Monu waylaid Rajbir and strangled him. Later, they threw him on the road. Rajbir’s head hit the road barrier and he died. The accused took Rajbir’s body and threw it in a canal,” said a police officer.

The police had recovered Rajbir’s body on October 8 from West Yamuna Canal in Panipat. The highly decomposed body was brought to local civil hospital for postmortem but was referred to Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences in Rohtak.

Malik had gone missing on the night of October 5 and a complaint was lodged with police. The next day, his motorcycle, with blood strains, was found abandoned in the bushes near Vikas Nagar. Rajbir was elected as village sarpanch in a bypoll held in December 2011, following the murder of sarpanch Rakesh Kumar.
