Delhi Lieutenant Governor Tejendra Khanna

New Delhi Delhi Lieutenant Governor Tejendra Khanna has advised private gun owners to set aside time everyday and use their weapons to prevent crimes against women in the capital.

In a speech on National Voter’s Day, Khanna suggested that gun licence holders do their bit. “I receive several requests for gun licences every week and I have advised them to put this to some good use. Such gun owners with licences must roam their neighbourhoods or lonely spots like bus stands each night and if they spot someone harassing a woman, they should use their weapon to stop the crime and take the perpetrators to the police,” he said.

“I recently told a group of people who had applied for gun licences to put their weapons to some ‘social service’. They can spend at least an hour or so everyday with their friends in public areas after nightfall and if they witness women in distress, then they can scare away such miscreants,” Khanna said.

The opposition BJP in Delhi called Khanna’s remarks “careless”. “Citizens should not be advised to take law into their own hands in any situation. People should carefully weigh the pros and cons of making such statements,” said V K Malhotra, leader of the opposition.
