Back home after the 2-0 series defeat, Hayden spoke about, what he perceived, poor ground conditions and inordinate delays during the matches ‘that happen in Third World countries’.
Not to take it lying down, BCCI Finance Committee Chairman Rajiv Shukla lashed out at the Australian for his remarks.
"This was a completely uncalled for remark by him. A player of his stature should not have made the comment," an angry Shukla said.
"If slow-over rate is your habit, why blame India for that and call India Third World? We are a very prestigious nation and it was not a nice comment by him," Shukla said.
Hayden made a list of things which he felt resulted in Australia's slow over-rates in the series against India.
He alleged the Indian batsmen were reluctant to ‘face up’ quickly enough and there was constant movements around sightscreens.
"They (opposition batsmen) are very difficult to get to face up," Hayden said.
"Often we find ourselves with hands on hips waiting for someone to either face up or someone in the sightboard to move away; all the little frustrations that happen in Third World countries and the heat as well," he added.
Australia were nine overs or 40 minutes behind schedule onthe penultimate day of the fourth and final Test in Nagpur, which forced their skipper Ricky Ponting to use part-time spinners instead of pacers at a crucial juncture.
Ponting, who could have been banned for a Test for the slow over-rate, subsequently came under severe criticism for his tactics.
Hayden, however, admitted over-rates have always been a problem for Australia.
"We've had trouble with our over rates for a long time now. It's not just us in international cricket that seems to struggle with it for whatever reason," Hayden said.

India is a third world country but it is one of the fastest growing economies in the world.I have visited india twice and am really impressed with the people there. They are very friendly and they treat guest like god..I feel like i am living in the rudest country in the world. And hayden..why you wanna hurt 1 billion hearts?
If you were not an foreigner and were from India only, then nobody would have given you that much respect. Its because an Indians don't like Indians. Its complicated and this sick attitude cannot be explained here in few words.
India is third world and will forever be I was born in the EU and of Australian descent. India is one of the filthiest useless failed 4th world countries in the world. Indians cant take the facts that the Aussie cricket team is among the richest in the world and the best team it will forever be. India will be third world forever. Australia and the EU is 1000 years ahead of india. I agree a lot of Matthew Hayden hes got it in one! India has 80% of its population living under $2USD PPP a day.
there are no free lunches in 1st, 2nd or 3rd world. We have to earn our bread by working hard. So, these classifications don't really matter.
What Alex is saying is correct. Instead of understanding what he is trying to say, he are trying make a irrelevant point.
helo mr hayden........ u say that india is a third world country
So, we now know two things - posters here don't understand what 'racist' means or what "Third World" means. It's not racist to call India Third World. It's an economic term. Racism is related to race, not how economically developed a country is. Anyone from the developed world is shocked at the poverty, miserable infrastructure and desperate living circumstances of most Indians. Most Indians have never been on a airplane, let alone lived in developed country. Most Indians don't even know how bad India actually is. And how the Third World label fits like a glove.
So, how does it matter, if we are an underdeveloped, poor, third world country? I does not. What matters is, we SPANKED the aussie team. Heh heh heh. Let me spend a moment and savor the pleasure here, again. The aussies left the sub continent with their tail between their legs. Understandbly, its started wagging once they reached the safe havens of their home. By the way, if you want to be SPANKED yet again, by a third world country, come on over, we shall be only too happy to do it. For, third world or not, we are a better cricket playing nation. Heh heh heh !
Who said we are the first world, moron. But can say for sure australia is not 1st nor 2nd nor 3rd world but a backward world. Yes that is a new term .Well u wont understand as u are an idiot
Guys, the world thinks your thirld world. Get over it. Places that have to say they are exclusive for instance generally aren't. By behaving like morons over this you are making it worse for yourselves.
It is interesting to read the arguments and counter arguments about India being a third world country. Remember this is based on the western definition. We can argue about this until cows come home. The fact of the matter is how dismissive and arrogantly Hyadon gave his excuse for failure. It is not worth to go down to his level. He is getting a lot of attention and as Indians we are throwing mud at each other. The magnanimity of Indian culture is to forgive the ignorant persons like Mat Haydon who is just another sportsman, who do not deserve such attention whether it is negative or not. When we do that we are playing into his hands. This is what exactly the colonoial rulers did to us in the past and we fell for it.
Its not racist to call india a third world country. And also there is no point referring to the australian heritage of thieves. More than half of Australia consists of migrants from the subcontinent, Asia, middle east and Europe. Is it not true your economy is stimulated by the use of cheap labor?. That, along with poor infrastructure are what many westerners would deem third world
OF COURSE IT IS RACIST TO CALL INDIA A THIRD WORLD WHEN IT ISN'T ONE AND THAT TOO BY PEOPLE IE THE AUSSIES WHO CRY FOUL OVER EVERY LITTLE THING. SO CALLING SOMEONE A MONKEY SHOULDN'T BE A RACIST SLUR EITTHER. DOUBLE STANDARDS!!
The fact that India is in the Third World also seems to means that Indians don't understand economics. Having a huge GDP is necessary when you have to share it among 1.3 billion people. GDP PER CAPITA is the universally recognised measure of economic development and India at the bottom, along with many parts of Africa and some parts of China. For those of us that have been to all these places it is obvious that India is Third Worldly. Along with the other accepted measures like annual income per person, infant mortality, education levels, health standards, airports, roads, etc India is invariably somewhere near the bottom. If you have a problem with these measures, go and take it up with the economic community, who all use it to measure progress. Blaming an old Australian cricketer shows how far India has to go to change it's internal perception and realize it's potential.
I agree all what you are saying, India is a underdeveloped country. Having 5-10% rich people in a country doesn't mean India is developing or developed country.
are u a NRI whose favourite pasttime is to throw stones at India though u might be living there as a second class citizen one can imagine from the nasty comments by the aussies people how acceptable the Indians who are living there are
It is not Hayden's fault that he thinks India is a Third world country. It is the fault of the size of the brain that he possesses, which is smaller than the size of a pea. It is due to this size, that his brain cannot process the information that not long ago, he has received US $350,000 for playing a handful of matches in the IPL, which he would not even dream of collectively receiving, even after playing every match for 3 to 4 years in the so called "first world countries" that he raves about. It's time for him to get on the internet or read newspapers to get a reality check about economic growth of India, so that the little brain of his could at least grow to the size of a pea.
It may be inappropriate for a visitor to call India a Third World country in public; but it is a fact that cannot be disputed. A Chandrayan or a Viswanathan Anand alone cannot elevate the status of the country to that of a developed one. Nor the fact that India has a few world's richest persons amongst them does not alter its status. Look at its position in Human Development Index-126 among the 170 nations in the world. Those who are below us are other South Asian and African countries which are also essentially Third World nations. That India can become a superpower- without providing basic necessities of life viz, clean water, electricity, toilets for all, quality education, healthcare, etc, is just wishful thinking of the elite who have got best out of the present system. A shining India applies to only for a few of its citizens, which also has been dimmed by the global financial crisis. It is time to give attention to providing basic necessities for all instead of pampering a few.
who said India is a superpower. But it is definitely a developing country .We are not dependent on UN for supply of food and clean water . Are u a NRI whose pasttime is to pelt stones at India alongwith people like hayden and pther aussies
Wikipedia designates Australia as a First World country and India as a Third World country (search: First World). By definition, if you go through history, India is a Third-World country- this should not be taken as an insult, but rather as a fact. To its credit, India has developed fast, and is one of the world's fastest growing Third World countries. Most Indians in Australia recognise the difference in the standards of living that will not be eliminated in the next 100 years. If Indians in India can not recognise this, then they are either stubborn, stupid, or oblivious to reality.
There was a comment written by an aussie obviously that there would be a civil war in australia and indians to move out from there. Should we inform our defence n your defence about it before hand so that our indian origin brothers and sisters are remain safe there Are u white aussies taking the ownership of australia which is made up of migrants. You should be going back from where your forefathers came from.
Kunal... My parents are both immigrant, I don't have any european blood in me. I am just providing some factual information. If you would like to disprove what I have written, I would happily hear your comments based on facts. India is a third world country- fact. I have no idea what the rest of your rambling means... "brothers sisters". Please rephrase that into something sensical.
A country itself is so great that anyone in this world cant make fun of it.Sir, if ur statements are hurting the feelings of people in some other country, then the only thing one should do is, apologize. i've been living in Australia for the past 5 years and respect this country and the countrymen. but, i have Indian blood in me. my parents belong to the same country. most of the people in India call it MUM. so u have no rights to make statements about someone's mother. well, as i mentioned earlier that i have been living here for the past 5 years, i don,t think there is something special about Australia that makes Her better than India. For ur kind information, i would like to tell u that India was the country where the first ever civilization was found. when people in Europe were living in caves, we had all the facilities in India. India told you people how to season ur food. As far as infrastructure is concerned, that in Australia is definitely different to the one in India. for instance, the roads, but do you people forget that ur countries are only infants when compared to India. we have all the latest technology in India that u have in your countries. and one more thing, as mentioned the difference in the standards in India and Australia, i would like to tell u something about the same difference. here in Australia, when u go to a hospital, sometimes u have to wait several hours before getting attended by a nurse or a doctor. it has happened to me and has happened to me four times. this changed my thinking so much that i dont go to a doctor anymore irrespective of the fact how sick I am. If the people in India are happy with the way it is, then leave it to them, whether they want to call it a THIRD WORLD or not. thank u very much sir. and one more thing, we have a saying in the oldest language which comes from India that translates something like," the ones that have a big heart, to them, the whole world is like a family."i have a lot more to tell u. i can send you a personal email regarding this, if u want and let u know what India is. no offenses.
Some facts.1> India's GDP is much bigger than Australia's.2> Australia cannot even compare to India in terms of defence, science and technology.3>Australians are descendants of criminals4> Australian PM is a descendant of an UNDERWEAR thief.5> Australia's so called development (which is restricted to maintaining clean streets) is also restricted to a few cities not all over Australia.
Nikhil, yes India's GDP is bigger than Australia- but that's because of the population! Check the GDP/capita and let me know the difference between Australia and India. Russia has a greater military capability than Lichtenstein. Yet, Russia is a Second World country, that doesn't change. Important factors in this debate is quality of life issues- health care, welfare system, life expectancy etc. Utilising insults as part of your argument ("Australian are descendants of criminals") fails to address anything. Crime rate in Australia is amongst the top 10 lowest in the world, whilst India ranked in the bottom 50. There's no point in you raising point 5 in your argument. Much of India is in a pitiful state of development if we wish to discuss "rural" cities, so it's best for your argument if you don't. I am not trying to condone Hayden's remarks. Just make a point that by definition (check Wikipedia), there was nothing factually wrong with what he said- India is a third world country by definition! You need to recognise this and move forward. India has much to be proud of for how far it has come so far, but there is leaps and bounds before it catches up to the western world. I wish it all the best in luck.
all indians must go back home to inida or there will be a civil war to get you out of our counrty.
INDIA is clearly NOT a THIRD WORLD COUNTRY.Population, corruption, pollution is not what makes a country a Third World nation.GDP(PPP)i.e.purchasing power parity is the general living standard index. With GDP(PPP)of $M 3,092,126 India is ranked 4th in the world.
(PPP)i.e.purchasing power parity.With GDP(PPP)of $M 3,092,126 India is ranked 4th in the world.
Where does that leave Africa? Do agree we have problems related roads, water supply, electricity etc especially in the rural regions. Can you compare it to that of Africas. The conditions in developing countries like India and China are not same as Africa.
I am not sure which era some of you belong to. Times have changed . India has progressed and improved although not completely . Most important factors which pulls down India from being a complete developed country is population explosion and corrupt politicans. But India cannot be called a 3 rd world in anyway It is definitely a developing country. The country which can be called third world in real sense is Africa. What is the difference between some of you and hyden??
Many on this board are proving that India IS a 3rd wld country, demonstrated by the hysteronics being displayed here (let alone normal economic indicators such as infant mortality, PP GDP etc). The overreaction to Haydos’ innocuous statement is telling. I am reminded of the embarrassing mock-indignation displayed following Haydos’ “obnoxious little weed” comment about Bajji – his character was illustrated by his disgraceful behavior when he slapped Sree! admittedly I’m a huge Sree fan ?You guys need to settle down. Hayden mentioned in the same interview that the Aussies had always had an over rate problem, as do others. The 3rd wld comment was suggesting contributing factors as the rate was extra slowI hope India can grow up as a nation the petty nationalism
There was debate over whether India is Third World country or not. Obviously India is. But to use this term for a wrong reason or to malign us has problem. Do you understand now?
India IS a Third World country. All the relevant measures show that - income per capita, infant mortality, adult literacy, infrastructure development, etc etc. Denying this is ludicrous. No-one who understands the modern, developed world considers India anything but a Third World country; 75% of Indians live on less than $5 a day! That said, India has a better cricket team than Australia and has fantastic economic potential. But in 2008, India is definitely positioned the Third World.
Australia IS a NATION OF CONVICTS. Whatever you say and whatever you do, you will always be known as the descendants of convicts. Each and every one of you including you mister thief who wrote this comment. Try denying it. I'll send you to jail where all your ancestors belonged. How about that. India thrashed you again. That is true. That you are a nation of convicts and will stay so for the rest of eternity is also a universal truth. We all know how shitty you feel being Australian. Poor freaks.
I think you need counselling Otherwise i will give you a free ticket to Africa to get a first hand experience of poverty at its worst so you compare the situation to that of India's. Also if i read your comments, you sound like be some NRI who migrated from living in slums to some phoren land and whose pastime hobby is to throw stones at India from a distance.Just becos you managed to have a car and roof over your head in some phoren land doing dirty dishes ot driving some cabs or doing jobs which none else wants to do , doesn't make you less Indian and more of a phirangi. Also Indians living overseas live in a world of pretence that they are like the rest when infact they are being treated like second class citizens. Stop making anti indian comments we know how deep you are in the sand there. You go and get some relaity check by visiting a psychitric.
To me,Hayden is the best player in the world cricket next to sachin and lara, and i didnt expect this from the person who is the all time great, particularly in INDIA,where he averages more than his career average
There is no doubt that India is a third world country,we are Indians we talk like Indians we behave like Indians and there is nothing wrong with that.If Hayden expect us to behave like Europeans how can it be possible when the Indians go to Aust. they don't expect the Aussis to behave like Indians,India and Indians go about in their life at their own pace,Hayden has been here too many times to know that and if he does'nt accept that ,then he shold not tour India as they say no body has a rope around his neck.
If you are still referring to India as a third world country and aggreeing to what that redneck country bumpkin has said , then you are equally moron like him. If u referring to third world conditions existing in India such as filty streets as though that is the only criteria for judging the country's economy. Take up some part time education , so u know where India stands in terms of its growth . If u find the streets dirty or roads not in proper condition, then organise mass protests against the authorities to improve them. Also become a member of some groups such as Lions club, Jaycees ( not usre if they still exist) , or whatever and start cleaning campaigns. Actually Australia has nothing else besides clean streets.
Hayden may known as good bats man in future, but never ever as a good person,he is a No:1 Racist in the world
Actually he is not the only one , all the aussies are the same and thinks the same. I hope u agree!!!!
Hayden is an opening batsman and also the number one Nuisance to his country..... His comments wont effect the person who he targeting.... but it will cause to loss the respect others had towards the country.......any way we Indians know what class of country we are in.... We still respectt Australia, due to their donation to world.... but having a person like hayden in Australia ,will cause to loss that respect....
Hayden needs counselling as he is not able to accept the defeat at the hands of so called third world country. f.. him
