New Delhi The Delhi unit of BJP today demanded that the 23-year-old gangrape victim be honoured with the Ashoka Chakra, the country's highest civilian award for bravery, as her courage has "inspired the whole nation".

In letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, BJP state unit president Vijender Gupta made the demand to honour the girl posthumously during Republic Day.

"The courage and bravery she exhibited has inspired the whole nation and shaken our national consciousness," Gupta stated in the letter.

He cited the case of India's youngest recipient of the Ashoka Chakra, Neerja Bhanot, to emphasise the need to honour the young paramedical student, who died in a Singapore hospital after being brutally assaulted in a moving bus here on December 16.

Bhanot, who was a flight attendant with Pan Am airlines, died while saving passengers from terrorists on board the hijacked Pan Am Flight 73 on September 5, 1986.

"You were one of the few people who were present at the time her body returned from Singapore and I am confident that you will consider the feeling of the nation to honour her with the Ashoka Chakra," Gupta said in the letter.

Ashok Chakra for Rape Victim by Satya Singal on 02 Jan 2013

Not a good idea. The gang rape victim needs sympathy and not an incentive to other women to get raped.

Awards to gangrape victim ? by KM on 02 Jan 2013

whats going on? are people carried away too much losing their sense? What about other rape victims? Awards to every victim? Awards are to be given to people who fight-work for people and bring changes. In this incident, she is a victim. Victim alone - although it had an impact hugely, it was due to people taking it up (and media sensationalising it). My sympathy to victim. But being victim alone can be a pass to award - such things may be rooted my politicians to gain popularity.

ushering in 2013...what is instore for the women of india by eb subramaniam on 02 Jan 2013

with our hands full of the blood of the poor 23 year old girl who died after being brutalised by the six goons,WE HAVE TO WELCOME THE NEW YEAR WITH FULL OF SORROW AND TREPEDATION.......WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THIS? I am bothered about the ""indian male chauvinism""we men are the main accused when it comes to atrocities against women....from 3 or 4 year old children to grown ups, we look at them and see them with an ""animal instinct""... if we men do not control this animal behaviour, and use this basic biological need as a ""normal human being"" the atrocities against women and children will continue....for which we men are solely responsible.......

Shocking demand and play of politics by raj on 02 Jan 2013

It is shocking BJP is using a rape victim to win votes and minds of people. BJP has been good in doing that in Assam, Odisha, UP and Gujarat where the king of rapes live and have a good time. What about Rape victims who are dying every day all over the country. Why Ashok Chakra !!! Why not call parliament and pass bills to take care of the following: 1. Cleaning up of police 2. Cleaning up of Judiciary 3. pass Lok Pal bill 4. Pass very stringent laws, with funding and monitoring to fight rape nationally. 5. Also BJP should pass a bill that bans all sitting and contesting MLAS, MPS who have rape , murder, and other criminal charges against them. Can you do it BJP.

Ridiculous by Keshav on 02 Jan 2013

The politicians are after popularity. Even though, she has fought against the rapists, giving her 'Ashok Chakra' is simply stupid suggestion. Most of the women do fight against the rapists. Will you give this medal to everybody?

Ashok Chakra by dv1936 on 02 Jan 2013

Why not start a new chakra, RAPE CHAKRA. The Chief Minister and Chief of Police of Delhi should share it.

'SHAURYA CHAKRA' by KP PILLAI on 02 Jan 2013
