* Heavy security deployed as body taken home, then to crematorium
Amid the public grief and anger across the country, the 23-year-old paramedical student who was gangraped and tortured in a moving bus in the capital was cremated in a private ceremony here early on Sunday morning, hours after her body was flown in from Singapore.
The Air India special flight (861 A) carrying the body of the rape victim, who died at a Singapore hospital early on Saturday, arrived at the IGI Airport (technical area) at about 3:20 am on Sunday. The victim’s family was received by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi, who reportedly arrived in a cavalcade that dispensed with the standard protocol for VVIP movement. Both Singh and Sonia are learnt to have placed wreaths on the coffin and expressed their regrets to the family.
At about 4:10 am, an ambulance carrying the body left the airport, escorted by over 20 companies of riot control personnel in buses and at least 15 more vehicles carrying senior Delhi Police officials. The body was taken to the victim’s Delhi home for over an hour, during which relatives and neighbours paid their last respects.
Despite the early hour, security personnel were deployed in huge numbers around the neighbourhood to ensure that no protests were carried out. The local MP, Mahabal Mishra, and Delhi BJP president Vijender Gupta, also arrived at the victim’s house.
At a little past 6 am, the victim’s father, two brothers and other relatives carried the body out to a waiting ambulance, for the final journey to a crematorium in Dwarka. It was still dark and the crematorium was barely visible due to the heavy fog.
At least 1,000 personnel of the Rapid Action Force were deployed at the crematorium, where the victim’s family waited for the first rays of the sun to perform the last rites, as advised by the priests. At around 7:30 am, the funeral pyre was lit by the victim’s father and two brothers.
Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, Minister of State for Home R P N Singh and senior BJP leader Jagdish Mukhi were among those who arrived for the cremation. Both Dikshit and Singh are reported to have assured justice to the family.
By 9 am, all the security personnel had left the cremation ground. Only some relatives and friends of the family remained, united in their grief.
DCP (South) Chhaya Sharma, who was present throughout the operation, said the decision to deploy so many security personnel was taken in order to avoid any untoward incident or protests.
“We have had policemen in plainclothes profiling the colony and residents since yesterday. While the security cover is indeed unprecedented, there were inputs about the possibility of outrage. The bereaved family has already suffered a lot, we did not want more trouble for them,” said Sharma.

as soon as the event happened the govt should wake up but when the demonstrations started by our beloved students/societymen, the govt.suddenly wokeup and started showing fake attachments to this event. it is shameful. Now it would be our responsibility to take care of such events which should not happen in future and also tobe care that to resist such people coming to power who cant listen to comman man.I pay homage to the deceased girl with deep sorrow. 0ne thing imust state that the youth of this unitedly can make change for our society/Nation and it has been revealed by them at the moment.
Why Sonia didn't do the same type of funeral for her Hubby and her Mother-in Law.Sorry Soniaji, you are also trapped by the political bitches, be BRAVE like your Mother in law OR GIVE CHANCE TO YOUR DAUGHTER,bette than your son
WHAT WAS THE REAON FOR THIS TREATMENT.WAS SHE A TERRORIST OR A BUTCHER OF INNOCENTS LIKE SADDAM HUSSEIN OR BIN LADEN?WHERE WE ARE AND WHAT WE ARE. WE ARE AFRAID EVEN OF OUR OWN SHADOWS.
Now the government is giving money to Amanat's parents. What the govt wants to show now? Is this mean the govt care for common man? No use giving money when it cannot bring the dead back.....
you have to walk alone a long long way..I may not be with you my friends!! but I may live in your thoughts .. I have shown you the path...fight for your own justice . Ye Aag kabhi..bhujna ne de.. Ye chirag..kabhi..bhujna na de... Damini
i will not allow to give the birth of girl baby to my wife . becoz i saw here in inda.whts happen with woman ...... i aslo ashamed to be born in this country specially aftere heard this insident . over mother, wife , sister arr not feeling safe in the capital of our country .its shame on us ... i request to the government to make the strong law againist rape cases there is need strong punishment .
Our revered India has completed 65 years of Independence, but where is the independence for common man like us, who always have to live with constant threat about our safety, Dignity & Life. The Independence is only for the Criminals/Rapists/Politicians/VIPs ... as they can live the way they want and not for people like us who are innocent and humble. This is a very pathetic situation we are facing. As a mother of a 10 year old girl, I really feel very insecured to send my daughter out to paly / tuition without escorting her, as I am a working woman , sometimes I have to let her go alone. But after this brutal incident in Delhi, I am very much horrified and peaceless and in constant fear about my daughter. She is studying about the pride of India in her Social Studies and asking me why MEN are so CRUEL to WOMEN? I don't have an answer to her. I Pray in this NEW YEAR 2013 onwards, GOVERNMENT should make necc amendment to law with punsihments to the culprits should be very CRUEL.
Why the hurry in cremation? One suspects whether she was, at all, alive even before she was flown away to a Singapore hospital. Perhaps, the government wanted all to believe that they did their best by giving her medical attention abroad. Of course at the government's expense to deny anyone the opportunity to accuse the government of doing nothing to save the girl.
we all have nothing to say about this incident that happened in delhi, but this is the time to act now.every time these kind of incident happened and all of us forget that after few months.the fact we don't want to accept. But the government should instead of consoling the family start the necessary step for the safety of the capital otherwise a day will come when parents don't want a female girl or will abort a female girl.Come on !lets make our capital as an ideal one...
Its been 16 days since the incident happened and the culprits were found. What else the government is waiting for? Don't the government see how terrific the incident was? When the people who just know the incident are this angry just think of the girl and her parents and family members. Shame on this country and the politicians and also the citizens of this country. Can't imagine this is a country where the women are treated as godess. Leave the 6 culprits for just 2 mins for the people of India and there won't be a mark of them existing on earth. When the laws made for the people are not helping the people at all why those laws? How many days the government will take to take action on those people?
politicians should resign, we dont want impotent people or law to be our representatves, for what they are taking monthly salary ? when they cant even extend parliament sessions when whole country is burning with desire..but they can sleep well under z sequrity, all those are real rapists of india who are raping all of us indirectly our country,,, when my india will be perfect ??????????????
Hypocrisy. Why She could not be cremated on India Gate Lawns when Bal Thakrey was cremated at Shiva Ji Park in Mumbai. It is not only youth of the country at grief but all sections of society feel that the victim was a part of their family. Govt had no right to deprive us from paying homage to the Daughter Of India. It is no democracy that cremation of an individual is to be performed under Police security that too in the dead hours of chilly winter.
very shamefulll......!!!!
SHAME ON INDIA AND INDIAN POLITICIANS. NOW U ALL C HOW CONGRESS WILL PLAN TO GET BENEFITED FROM THE ISSUE OF THE PUNISHMENT FOR THE RAPIST AND NOT DOUBT THE SAME GOVERNMENT WILL COME IN TO CENTER AGAIN IN COMING ELECTIONS. THIS ALL IS HELL POLITICS AND BLOODY POLITICIANS. JUST GUESS IF THE SAME INCIDENT MIGHT HAVE HAPPENED WITH ANY HIGH PROFILE GIRL FROM POLITICAL BACKGROUND.

it is 100% govt failure where they are not able to support women and in a secret manner they took the body to singapore and brought dead and completed the creamation in an hurry way before sunrise. atleast we youth shd think in future while electing our people tht whether they are able to show the min. concern to the people or worried abt other vested interests for their self or families. very very shameful to be an indian women with a lot of grief and sorrow
I am ashamed to be born in this country, espacially after this incident. When a girl is brutally killed, people of this lovely city gets wokenup, protests takes places and just fearing law and order situation, she is hurriedly cremated. No one except the govt and here close relative knows her, she becomes a law and order problem. Well let me ask this elected govt, did we voted this party to power to get girls raped like this and bruttaly thrown to streets? if this can happen in Delhi, we all know what can happen at other places. So next time some SG, RG, MMS dies, they will hurriedly be cremated without informing the people, how and when ?.....
The parasites are running scared of the dead victim. Her funeral pyre may go cold in hours, but the country's anger will burn, those who betrayed her and thousands more like her every year.
It clearly shows govt. is in fear, matter is ot to change the law of india it's matter of action from the authority what happen a strict law is drafted without action on culprit, police are reluctance to lodge FIR in most of the common man cases, they treat as nothing happen, system become insensetive/ruthless it's a complete anrachy
Just to escape punishment, I think she is behaving like a psycho. If proved medically that she is not a psycho, award her with a death sentence.
//NAMOSKAR// YES, WILFULLY TAKEN THE PATIENT AND FLOWN TO SINGAPORE (THOUGH OUR COUNTRY HAS ALL FACILITIES IN RELEVANT HOSPITAL) AND BROUGHT BACK DEAD BODY OF RAPED VICTIM / 23 OLD DELHI MEDICAL STUDENT GIRL CREMATED EARLY MORNING SECRETLY, INDEED IT RAISES EYE BROWS OF COMMON MAN (HINDUSTANIS) AND HOPING IT SHOULD NOT BE RECALLED ONE MORE INCIDENT TAKEN PLACE TO OUR FORMER P.M. SHRI LAL BAHADUR SHASTRI%u2019S DEMISE AT TASHKANT (USSR) INDO-PAK AGREEMENT%u2026.?
"The bereaved family has already suffered a lot, we did not want more trouble for them,%u201D said Sharma." Yes. we are sure that this is what you are always worried about. That's why all the crimes are going on, with no sufficient policing, but for any VIP duty there are always enough. For any protests, it is a moments work to shutdown the entire city. Water cannons are readily available to ensure no one reaches close to Ms Dixit's house. Imagine the horror if she has to suffer the indignity of people protesting in front of her house. Not one politician is ready to reduce his/her security cover to release more security for common citizens. Every year the cover goes up. Why? How many terrorist attacks have our politicians suffered? Contrast this with crimes against citizens. We are suffering due to stupidity, selfishness and vanity of our political class, and we still revere them. Even God cannot help us!
The cremation was done in Delhi to enable Mrs.Sonia Gandhi to shed crocodile tears.
JINHE NAAZ HAI HIND PAR WOH KAHAN HAIN??????
It was the Fear factor of the authorities in power which lead to this "Stealth Operation". It had nothing to do on the 'privacy of the family'. After the girl is dead and the whole village know about this, then what is the privacy you are talking about? The government feared their seats. If the body is brought to the public, emotions will flow high, protest will sky rocket and it will surely corner the government and will force them to take actions which they are reluctant till now. Any concrete measures taken on the rapist in general can have the possibility of the authorities losing its seats. I am sure the Broadcast Editors' Association 'directive' to the media not to cover the funeral is also a part of the governments tactics. This is India, if you are in power you can do anything. You can make the cat a tiger or a tiger a cat, if you use the words properly. In this case the Government achieved it. And to the family, it will be only assurances and grief.
