IAC workers clash with police outside Hooda's residence, Kejriwal faces protest himself

New Delhi Supporters of Arvind Kejriwal clashed with police outside Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda’s Delhi residence on Sunday afternoon. The activists, who were protesting against the Hooda government’s alleged role in facilitating land deals between Robert Vadra and realty major DLF, said they had been “brutally beaten”, a charge that police denied.

Soon afterward, at a press conference called by Kejriwal to condemn the police action, the activist-politician was confronted dramatically by a 55-year-old woman who accused him of being corrupt, a liar, and of “doing politics”.

The woman who gave her name as Annie Kohli and said she was from Mumbai, claimed to be a former activist of Kejriwal’s India Against Corruption (IAC), but Kejriwal denied knowing her.

Around 12.30 pm, about 200 IAC supporters gathered at Gol Dak Khana and marched toward Hooda’s residence on Pandit Pant Marg. They breached a barricade, following which police turned water cannons on the protesters. No senior IAC leader was among the protesters.

IAC members alleged that over 70 activists had been injured in a police lathicharge. But Delhi Police PRO Rajan Bhagat said, “There was no lathi charge.”

A senior officer said the protesters had been warned against breaching the barricade. “When they turned violent, we resorted to mild force and water cannons,” the officer said. Two companies comprising around 140 personnel were deployed.

Police said four of their personnel and six protesters were administered first aid for minor injuries. Twenty-five protesters, including four women, were detained at Parliament Street police station, where a case of rioting and obstructing a public servant was registered against unknown persons.

At a press conference at his office in Kaushambi around 4 pm, Kejriwal presented four protesters who had had to be taken to Ram Manohar Lohia hospital to be treated for injuries. The protesters showed injuries allegedly caused by police beating.

“Police lathicharged IAC supporters who were holding a peaceful protest outside the Haryana CM’s residence. Several persons suffered injuries,” Kejriwal said. “Police atrocities against a peaceful protest is condemnable.”

Kejriwal accused the Congress and the Haryana government of “trying to save Vadra”. “The chief minister (Hooda) has transferred the officer who has ordered a probe into the incident. They are telling us corruption will go on and we will have to suffer. Our supporters had gone there to seek some answers from Hooda. But they were lathicharged,” Kejriwal said.

Minutes after Kejriwal had stopped speaking, he was accosted by Annie Kohli, a white-haired woman who was accompanied by around 35 other people, all of whom claimed to be former IAC volunteers. “When you can pose questions to others, why can’t they ask you?” she demanded.

Shaking a finger at Kejriwal, she said, “You speak with a lot of affection but you are doing politics. You are using this as a ladder for your politics. Revolutionaries never run away from suffering. But for you, when the time came, you ran away.”

Kohli accused Kejriwal of abandoning his original goal of the Janlokpal bill, and shifting between issues. “You were protesting with disabled people against Salman Khurshid. First you said you will sit there till you get results. But after four days, you left the place saying now you will go to Farrukhabad. You have support in Delhi. You want to become a leader,” she said.

To reporters, she said, “I asked him (Kejriwal) if he was a revolutionary or a politician? He replied that he was a revolutionary politician... He needs to take a stand. He should be clear whether he is a revolutionary or a politician.”

Kohli distributed a pamphlet that said, “The independence struggle had two streams of protests. One, the revolutionary path of Bhagat Singh and the other, that of Mahatma Gandhi. Which one do you follow? Once you answer this, I will raise another nine questions.”

When asked about Kohli, Kejriwal said, “I don’t know her. What kind of questions is she raising? Every agitation has its own strategy.”

The question that is never asked by Ramakrishnan on 22 Oct 2012

It is really unbelievable that even after Mr. Kejriwal announcing his political ambitions no one has sought clarity on matters other than corruption like his stand on Anti-India statements of his colleague Mr. Prashant Bhushan, stand on policy issues like river sharing arrnagements, reservation, terrorism related laws FDI on different sectors including retail and infrastructure, indulging in the avoidable and potential acts criminal miscoducts relating to defamation by himself and his team etc so that voters get some clarity for comparison.

It appears it is a preplanned attack to discredit Arvind Kejriwal. ofcourse if we look through history, we know hands of blood of Digvijay singh (2004 bophal issue and 2009 land scam issue) and salman krushid (stealing from disabled of all people). We just ignore and move on while ensuring securing of Arvind.

Kejriwal- a bull in the China shop. by K V Ravindran on 22 Oct 2012

Kejriwal has become a bull in the china shop, attacking everybody and everything in front of him. He still swears by Anna but his ways of agitation on the streets and statements are far removed from that of Anna. He has become a typical politician leading street processions and provoking the police to act.Who is he to challenge the Prime Minister of the nation for a public debate with him?. Probably he is under the wrong impression that one who can talk loudly and silence others is superior. Mr Kejriwal's role as a crusader against corruption has ended when he entered politics and started behaving like any low class street politician. One wonders what happened to other stalwarts of the original Anna Team?

kejriwal by Ram Lakhan on 22 Oct 2012

It is immoral to always attack others trying to uphold laws. Police are doing their job and he attacks them as if they are not from India. Behaving in such immoral ways cannot be justified its the tactics of blackmailers.

4) India is a democratic country. This is of the people, by the people, for the people. and IF kind of corruption came into limelight in last 2 years, It is country who is asking answer from PM. KEjriwal is just a representative and want to be sure that peopel will get answer. There were days when PM used to come and say about things happening in country. Atal bihari vajpai always used to come to press. But this idiot and silent monmohan dont have any courage to face media and that is the reason why kejriwal is asking for public debate. Didnt you watch debate between romney and obama. hahaha. 5) Kejriwal is not a crusader. He entered into politics to change the opinion of politics what we have. How we see politics now, as a dirty game. Now this one has to change. Politics can be done for good shake and I think thats y he is there.

1) He is not attacking everyone and everybody. He is attacking only those who is involved in corruption. He never said any word for many congress and BJP leader. Till now he has attacked only 15 leaders, against which he has documents of corruption. 2)The only difference between Anna's movement and Kejriwal's movement is Kejriwal is into politics and taking right on with all the stubborn and proudy leaders, who forgot that india is a democratic country. 3) There is a difference between typical politician who provoke public and use them for votes. what kejriwal is doing is just showing the real and dirty face of indian politics in front of us.

Lack of trust for Kejriwal by Bodan on 22 Oct 2012

Kejriwal, as some commentators correctly said, has lost total balance after Anna dissociated himself for correct reasons. He is abusing everyone and the media is just publishing everything what comes from the mouth of anyone. In that way media is acting very irresponsibly. For kejriwal, he will face more such protester like A Kohli in future questing Kejriwal's own credibility in association with liar activist like Damania. He himself has taken recourse to lies as has been observed from his statements that he does not recognize Kohli etc. He does not understand at all how the development and social work is done in India. He is good in only throwing mud.
