India for expanding industrial relations with Syria

New Delhi, January 18: India has expressed interest in expanding its industrial engagements in Syria in the form of investments and joint ventures.

The government has also taken up with the Syria government cause of public-sector Computer Maintenance Corporation facing difficulties in finalisation of contracts for the automation of railways in that country, a Commerce Ministry release stated in New Delhi on Friday.

These issues were discussed during the first session of India Syria Joint Commission on trade held in New Delhi during January 15-17, where Commerce and Industry Minister Kamal Nath and Syrian Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs Abdullah Dardari were present.

During the meeting, Nath mentioned the prospects of Indian investments in rock phosphates and fertilisers, cement, power sector, IT, education, agro-industries in Syria.

Bilateral trade between India and Syria grew 78.86 per cent in 2006-07 to USD 487.94 million from USD 272.8 million in the previous year.
