Being the Olympic qualification round, the officials of the Indian Weightlifting Federation (IWF) were expecting at least one of the seven women lifters to clinch an Olympic berth.
The best was Monika Devi (69kg), Melbourne Commonwealth Games medallist, finishing a respectable 11th in women’s 69kg category.
Other Indians were down the ladder. With Elumalai G. (69kg) finishing in 39th place in the men’s group.
Sarabjit Singh’s new national record in jerk in the 105kg plus category was the only face-saving performance. He lifted 206kg, which was better than his own national record of 204kg. Sarabjit finished 18th overall in his group with a total lift of 371kg.

Inurani Chanu (63kg) 25th —-total 196kg (86kg, 110kg) Monika Devi (69kg) 11th-total 219 (99kg, 120kg). Sumati Devi (75kg) 17th-total 212 (92kg, 120kg). Geeta Rani (+105kg) 20th -total 232 (100kg, 132kg).
MEN: Elumalai G (69kg) 39th-total 285 (125kg, 160kg). Sarabjit Singh (+105kg) 18th-total 371 (165kg, 206).
