India to wait and watch after Pak talks offer

New Delhi A day after Pakistan proposed foreign minister-level talks to resolve the heightened tension along the Line of Control (LoC) following the beheading of an Indian soldier, India Thursday adopted a wait-and-watch strategy, saying it would take a decision after observing Islamabad whether stuck to its promise to respect the ceasefire.

While Pakistani foreign minister Hina Rabbani Khar reached out late on Wednesday by offering a discussion on “all concerns related to the LoC”, a clear climbdown from the earlier position that called for UN intervention, her Indian counterpart Salman Khurshid made it clear that India would not take a hasty decision but would go by actions on the ground.

“Let us not rush into the matter. (We should) move step by step,” Khurshid said after a meeting of the cabinet on Thursday. The government also felt it could not respond to Khar’s offer, which came through the media.

Defence Minister A K Antony informed the cabinet that the ceasefire had held since Wednesday when the DGMOs of the two countries spoke and agreed not to escalate the matter. He is learnt to have said that there was a general reduction in tensions along the LoC, and shared the assessment of the Army that a close watch needed to be maintained.

The meeting is believed to have concluded with the agreement to adopt a wait-and-watch policy and observe actions on the LoC in the coming days.

Antony also informed the cabinet that passions have been running high among Indian troops after the beheading. The cabinet was also told that there was no indication that the threat of cross-border firing would spread from Mendhar that has seen the latest spate of violence.

Pak offer of talks by Kolsat on 18 Jan 2013

FM Khurshid's response to Pakistan FM Khar's offer of talks is the correct response. Pakistan knows that India will not drastic action because of fear of terrorist attacks by Indian mujahiddins. Only few days back FM Khar was calling India a war monger and maintaining no beheadings took place. Now the Pakistan army is asking its soldiers to show restraint which is a tacit acceptance that they did something without restraint. Congress should forget that Indian Muslims vote for them for once and show a tough face to Pakistan and take very strong measures which will put Pakistan under stress. India should also take strong military action when they cross LoC or start firing across it.

TIME INDIA GOT TOUGH by uma on 18 Jan 2013

The recent gruesome and dastardly act carried out by Pakistan is completely unacceptable.I hope the Indian Government is in tune with the mood of the nation.Every soldier's life is precious. And what does Khar want to talk about anyway? Her bags,shoes,make-up,jewellery?It is high time that India got tough with this non-stop aggression. Why this diplomatic talk, which, they don't understand anyway?Cut the social, cultural and sports contacts.Stop appeasing, for they do not deserve our hospitality.Time to say ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.

INDIA NEEDS TO SNUB PAKISTAN by HARJAP SINGH AUJLA on 18 Jan 2013

PAKISTAN considers India as a very soft spineless state. They know when to be aggressive and when to be diplomatic. At this stage India must snub Pakistan and not agree to any talks. They take India for granted.
