The court made this observation while holding Madhukar Kambari not guilty of abetment to suicide.
His wife Vandana had committed suicide by setting herself ablaze in November 1995. According to the prosecution, she killed herself after a quarrel with husband over bringing a hen home for meal. In May 1997, a sessions court acquitted the man of the charges of subjecting wife to cruelty and abetment to suicide.
However, the state government moved High Court, which rejected its appeal recently.
Justice P D Kode said, “The harassment contemplated under IPC section 498(A) is apparently of a persistent nature and is required to be in relation with property of a significant value.”
