This is the first time a state unit of the Jamaat-e-Islami is venturing into visual media. Incidentally, Jamaat mouthpiece Madhayamam itself does not publish film advertisements, a policy it has followed since its launch 25 years ago.
The channel would be floated by the Kozhikode-based Madhyamam Broadcasting Corporation. A tie-up has already been worked out with Al Jazeera.
Jamaat’s ‘assistant amir (Kerala)’ Sheikh Mohammed Karakunnu, an Islamic scholar, said Mediaone would follow the same principles practised by Madhyamam. “Like the daily, the TV channel will give due space to issues of minorities, Dalits and the marginalised. The TV channel will also have regulations on accepting advertisements, (and on) content of the programmes,” he said.
Karakunnu confirmed that Mediaone would also produce its own films apart from sourcing films from outside. “Work on a film has begun,” he said.
Mediaone group editor O Abdurahiman said their aim was to give voice to the voiceless. “We want to develop an alternative media culture as our daily has done. Mediaone TV has entered into a tie-up with Arab broadcaster Al Jazeera, mainly for sharing content on world affairs. The channel would be hived into news and entertainment after six months.”
Noting that the bar on film advertisement in Madhyamam had no link with Mediaone airing films, Abdurahiman pointed out that the Jamaat mouthpiece didn’t skirt film news either. “Our daily gives film reviews and covers film festivals exhaustively,” he said.
Among the film proposals the channel is considering, Abdurahiman said, was one based on the life of Kunhali Marakkar, a local king’s naval chief who had fought against Portuguese invaders after Vasco da Gama’s arrival on the Malabar Coast in the 15th century. The story falls neatly in line with Jamaat’s pet campaign: anti-imperialism.
Writer and social critic Prof N M Karassery said that as it strives for more space in the mainstream, it was but natural for the Jamaat-e-Islami to turn to new media. Films, which could be used for ideological campaigning, were an obvious choice. “The Jamaat is not a mere religious outfit, but a political one in disguise,” he noted.
Karassery, however, added that the move could also backfire on the Jamaat. “I do not think that the channel would make that organisation more liberal, but may expose their anti-women approach and their capitalistic intentions,’’ he said.
Prof Hameed Chendamangaloor, who studies Muslim organisations, too isn’t surprised by the Jamaat’s foray into TV media as it wants to wield more political clout and foster Islamic politics. “No Muslim organisation can stick on to the days when watching TV or enjoying music was taboo. Even if the ideology is for conservatism, political motives would spur the Jamaat and other organisations to embrace changes, he said.
It is not an easy task, it includes lot of efforts and Hard work. And we are very much confident that Media one will come up with flying colors and will prove to be a channel for Truth. In this world of lies, false news and dirty serials let us have a channel which will focus on the truth and reality.
I believe JIH's step in producing films and serials is to educate the people and uphold the values of humanity which contemporary Indian visual media has failed to give. Hope JIH follows the same policy of "Madhyamam" in its "MediaOne" contents. Unless they are airing informative, social education programs (It Could be serials & Short films) there won't be a backfire in Jamaal itself. We wish success for the new channel and anticipating the same channel in Tamil and Hindi!!!!

Well said kassim Bhai. Yes it will be a better option of having Live streaming services.
Change is inevitable in this fast growing technological world. You have to adopt new technologies, ideas to stay with the rest of the world. The line is drawn on how ethically and morally they use these all that will distinguish from others. Some Muslims may be against that this is against of Islam and haram. They should understand this is not only for Muslims but also for non-Muslims and it is going to counter the currently biased Cinemas and media. You cannot deny the fact that Muslims are the biggest targets of the current Hindi cinemas which aims to do business in Pakistan, Bangladesh also. At last, no one will forget the effect of %u2018The Messenger%u2019 Hollywood film taken decades ago it did particularly among non-Muslims. So I hope this timely taken decision by Jamath will give new angle to the media and both Muslims and Non-Muslims benefit from that.
With this new venture, i am sure that Mediaone will remove the stains from the film industry by producing films without vulgar/violence subject. Beleive it or not, currenty style of Indian films has played an important role for this increased cultural disasters and sexual harrassments.
Go ahead Mediaone TV. People of the oppressed and suppressed communities always behing you
Maasaa Allah. Best of luck to media one which will raise the voice of the voiceless. We pray Almighty that just like madyamam daily, media one channel will also grow fast and steady and will win the hearts of each and every citizen of india where the religion or Organisation will be a barrier. We are very keen and confident that jamath will never compromise with Islamic as well as its own principle.
Watching, Making movies is Haraam! Even listening to Music. In the name of Islam this organisation is fooling people. Wondering to what extend this unit will go on.....
It is a good idea. But not an easy task.It requires meticulous planning and hard work as the film , mostly short film has to be in line with islamic principle without stirring up other islamic organisation and clearing the doubts of brothers of other relegion. Any way we wish JIH good luck.
as given in the article, madhyamam is not the jamaat mouthpiece, but 'prabhodanam' is the jamaat mouth piece.
Yes, Prabhodanam is the jama-ete-islami's mouth piece. I think author made a mistake on it.
masha allah... this is an excellent idea. may allah accept your work and help you to succeed in all your matters.
There is a factual error in this report. Madhyamam Daily is a popular newspaper run by a trust controlled by Jamat e Islami. Their Mouthpiece is 'Prabodhanam' Weekly not Madhyamam Daily.
All the best wishes, awaiting the broadcasting of such a real family channel.
Muslims need to reach all those areas, which are deviating the Ummah from the right-track in the name of entertainment. By the Grace of Allah, this is an excellent alternative to the main cause of deviation; T.V. May Allah shower his blessings and make this step of theirs a great success in this world and the hereafter.
Most of the main stream Malayalam T.V.channels are biased and promoting negative attitudes of human nature. They influence the people to go with their agenda. So there is an alternative space for visual media .We hope that "media one " can deliver unbiased and alternative viewpoint ,different information and interpretations of the word that are missing in our Malayalam Channels.
This is very good news, we need a channel which a family could sit together and watch to learn to develop our way of life is very much in need . God bless guide and bless the channel to reach the masses and be benefited to the mankind.
Technology can be used selfishly or to benefit the society. Intention of the ones in control decides this. It is obvious that the maintstream media is being controlled by various vested interest groups. Hopefully we can expect Mediaone to be an exception if they follow the footsteps of the Madyamam daily which is being sought by one and all for honest reporting. Just to mention a few examples of the benefit received from their investigative jounalism, the adivasis land grabbing for industrial purpose was nullified by Madyamam's timely action and the reporting of the sheep farm scam saved many investors being cheated by their selfish promoters.
This matter is very happiest one. We must welcome this initiative effort.
Jamaat proved its ethical approach in print media. Madhyamam do not accept film ads and provocative phohos. Happy to note their entry into visual media. We hope and wish them for success. It is a relief to the charecter based families to see the Television with dignity. It is a need of the hour.
Congrats to Jama ath leaders for their virtuos attempt because, they already have proven it thru Madhyamam. I guess Karasseri and Hameed are jealous of this organization as it is not wild.
It doesnt matter if Jamaat-e-Islami/Hind/Sikh/Jain/Budhhism/Christianity or any other faith enter the Broadcasting Industry as long as their future actions remain in accord to their submitted Statement of Purpose for acquiring the license and permission. It should be the Civilised society who should be able to voice their concern and influence the policies which affect the quality of life in our country. Hope respect each other's diverse ways of life on this beautiful land.
