Akshara Theatre’s new production The Revised Kama Sutra is a contemporary, comical take on a young boy’s search for love, sex and spirituality. Based on Indian-American Richard Crasta’s hilarious novel of the same name, the play graphs the protagonist’s journey from Mangalore to Washington DC. The performance includes song and dance numbers by various artistes — including Nisa Shetty, who also acts in the play, American dancer Michelle Agresti and Akshara’s dancers Mahima Saigal and Sachin Sikri.

“The play deals with a different level of discovery — it’s Vijay Prabhu’s (the protagonist’s) search for love. While he has grown up in a small world, his ambitions are bigger. This takes him to Washington, and yet, he comes full circle when he returns to India,” says the play’s director, Anasuya Vaidya. “The Revised Kama Sutra is a fairly serious play in its theme, but we’ve added a touch of humour to it with song and dance sequences. The idea was to make it provocative, but, of course, it is all in good fun,” she adds.

The first adaptation of Richard Crasta’s novel was done three years ago by Vaidya herself, as a dramatic reading. It was then adapted for stage by her mother, Jalabala Vaidya. “This is a full-scale production and our first official performance. Theatre veteran Sunit Tandon is part of our play, along with several talented young actors from Akshara,” says Vaidya.

The play will be staged at Akshara Theatre in English on Dec 21-24. For adults only
