Kamal Haasan threatens India with self-exile over Vishwaroopam row

Kamal Haasan threatens India with self-exile. (Bollywood Hungama)

New Delhi Kamal Haasan addressed the media today in his own house, made a stirring case for free speech and expressed his sorrow at the treatment he is being accorded in India - his controversial Tamil movie Vishwaroopam has sparked Muslim protests leading to many states authorising a ban on its screening.

Stating his anguish at having to put his emotions on display in this manner, Kamal said, "I don't know why I am being surrounded by a political conspiracy and by whom. I am not going to even hazard a guess - it is a fact, and my history proves it, I have been leaning neither towards right nor left. I have maintained my position. I have become an instrument in a political game. This has ruined me, drained me totally and threatens to destroy me."

An emotional Haasan said that he has 'hocked' his house and that he and his brothers are losing crores on the venture due to the protests and the subsequent ban. Stating all these attacks are unjustified as the Censor Board had cleared the film - "what is the point of the Censor Board".

"My home will be taken over by the moneylender if the loan is not returned by a particular date. I have a lot of fond memories over the years tied up with this place and I thought with Vishwaroopam I would add one more. But as things stand, I don't see that happening. My brother Chandrahaasan who has a business interest in the film is equally affected," says Kamal - movie reportedly cost over Rs 100 cr.

Getting increasingly upset during the press meet, he threatened self-exile, "If I cannot find a secular place in India, then I will find it in some other country." He said that he would emulate iconic artist M F Husain (who died in exile as he faced attacks from right wing organisations in India especially the Bal Thackeray-led Shiv Sena) and flee to another country, get a new passport and refuse to come back to India.

"M F Husain did it, now Haasan will do it. I will seek a living in India or abroad," he added.

"When I have nothing to lose, I might as well choose. I will look for a place to stay from Kashmir to Kanyakumari, but not Tamil Nadu... Tamil Nadu wants me out. if I can't find it here, I will look for it abroad. Nothing will change the fact that I am a Tamil and an Indian, only my passport will change."

Unwilling to say anything to get into further trouble as the case is sub judice, Kamal says, "Let me not blame anyone, I am too small a man. We all know who is responsible for this reprehensible state of affairs."

On the violence that has happened and is held up as a threat for the future, he said, "I know my fans will keep the peace - a lot of my fans are Muslims. They have not found anything wrong with the film and have been supportive throughout. I have promised my Muslim brothers that I will not do anything wrong."

"I fail to realise how a film based in Afghanistan can be derogatory or otherwise insulting for Muslims in India. India has been known as a secular state, but what is happening is not right for its people, for its future".

While concluding the meet, he said, "I may not retain this house, but I am sure I will still have homes to feed me. Now, I shall wait for the new judgment."

@Saju - Are you that DUMB? by Vivek on 05 Feb 2013

Dude, what on earth is wrong with you? There are thousands of movies that has action plots against terrorists and these movies portray different types of terrorists. They show Russians/Chinese(buddhist)/Arabs/Europeans/cubans etc. as terrorists. For human-beings sake Kamal Hassan himself portrayed an American (christain) as a terrorist. Did anybody give a damn about all that? Haven't you ever seen any Vijaykanth movies? 80% of his movies are about MUSLIMS as terrorists. Why didn't you voice up then? Weren't muslims your brothers then? On a seperate note, are muslims living ONLY in TamilNadu? Most muslims India live in the North and they themselves can't wait till the movie is released. SO WHY ON EARTH DO THESE GUYS WANNA MAKE A FUSS? DON'T TELL ME ITS BECAUSE IT'S A TAMIL MOVIE BECAUSE IT HAS BEEN MADE IN HINDI TOO! Simple answer would be - POLITICS! Trust me, we all consider each other brothers and sisters (individuals may have hate between each other but as a group we all love each other). Everybody knows and loves at least one muslim, hindu, christian, buddhist etc. So don't come in here saying that you are the only one on earth who has feelings for other religions. Look at people as human beings and not as religions. P.S. Vishwaroopam shows terrorists as muslims and not the other way around.

Outcry by Saju on 01 Feb 2013

I Dont feel sorry for what happened with Kamal Hasan , Why should he make a movie which shows explicit deterioration of Muslim caste , now people would negotiate claiming there is nothing wrong shown in the movie pertinent with Muslims faith. My question is why a religious blasphemer , or a particular religion is focused in the movie? I reckon it is this kind of people who are creating hatred for Muslims across n the globe through such movies and cheap gimmicks, and now Dont say that your trying to show up what is the truth and trying to make others know what is really happening? Then why only the worse part of a caste shown. Say me one movie in recent time which have shown the upside of Muslim. Have any movie maker or any one across in our country got erection in Penis to shown up a blasphemer for any other religion. Do any one ? it they .do so then they shall feel the heat .. I am not a muslim , i am a Christian by faith but yet it bring pain in heart seeing my brothers getting insulted .

vishwaroopram crisis by arulraj on 31 Jan 2013

I as an indian and as a Tamilan i ashamed the ban against Vishwaroopam by the TN Govt. Its purely political play by JEYA to cover the the Muslims Votes. She will never sucseed. The tamil peoples(including the Actors in India) will support to KAMALJI

mr by anonymous on 31 Jan 2013

This movie is NOT A FICTION. It's the truth - what is happening in some parts of the world and we all know it from newspapers, tv and radio. This movie does not show anything new. So why people are getting so sensitive or afraid to watch or let people watch this? I do not understand the reason for the ban or the excuses given for the ban by the top brass in the judiciary or the govt. I watched the movie and I sincerely hope my friends and families in India will get an opportunity to watch it too.

Irrerelavant BAN! by Vivek on 31 Jan 2013

This is the first time tamils don't get to watch a tamil movie while other countries and states get to watch it. This is a very small issue if you look at it as a whole. Actors have made movies like this before but in a snall scale. For example: in the late 90s and early 2000s there were so many TAMIL ACTION movies based on terrorism like vijaykanth's movies that DIRECTLY uses muslim names and people as terrorists. Recently we had a movie called "payanam" which portrayed terrorists as muslims. There are many more like that. Why was there NO ban for that but a ban for a movie that doesn't potray muslims as terrorists? By the way @ritter - get your facts right mate. As far as I know, Kamal Hassan is an Atheist. He himself took a movie called Dasavatharam potraying cholars as bad people. Did tamils say anything? Did politicians say anything? No! They were ENTERTAINED by the movie. Just because he wanted a veshti man as a prime minister. Whatever happened to freedom of speech.

Contribute to great man, can't see him in tears. please open some channels for funding him for the losses he incurred. we will support him!!!!!!!!

Vengeance by Shadows on 31 Jan 2013

Cho, with some inside knowledge, mentioned intelligence reports as reason behind the ban! It's the same f* law and order issue that needs to be protected by the govt. idiots. Jayalalitha can't be a censor for freedom of speech. Public anger is something she has seen, and I am really surprised to see that she has not learnt from the past... Both from the anger against the family owned DMK, and her own past... of greed, vengeance and ego.

Against ban of viswaroopam by Mohankumar on 31 Jan 2013

Tamil nadu government making this issue to get more votes from muslim community. Ok its great idea, but? to get the muslims support she is going against all kamal fans. I am openly opposing tamil nadu government act towards kamal. I once support tamil nadu government now standing against them. If this continues all kamal fans will start opposing tamil nadu government. We are now against tn govt for their injustice against kamal for their selfishness. Kamal fans please join ur hands.

Don't leave over stupid politicians by Priyanka on 31 Jan 2013

Article 19 of Indian constitution gives freedom of expression to every citizen. Why politician don't let people decide if any movie is bad for them or not? Atleast we are more educated than them. This looks like politically motivated ban. They just don't want to deal with real issues in politics hence wasting our n their energy into such issues. TN is facing severe power crisis. please work on that instead of harassing ppl. Kamal Hassan is respected actor. lets support him and hope that ban will be lifted soon. Well on positive note I had not heard of movie until controversy. Now will definitely watch it!

he is foolish acts by ritter on 31 Jan 2013

he has uttered his own words for the fame, he has showed his color just for the money, what makes him invest so much 100 crores the crap movie, which hurts the sentiments of such film, the movies banned is the right decision, will you accept screening such against hinduism??? the governments have done good job else whole india would have burn the theatres & movies

Bad Investor! by A Haasan Fan on 31 Jan 2013

Looks like he put all his eggs in one basket. He may be a good actor, but he is a bad investor.

Dont Leave the Country by cpnair on 30 Jan 2013

Kamal, your sentiments are well understood and respected. If things are hot in Tamil nadu, just cross western ghat and come to Kerala. The malayalis are very fond of you; they will take care of you. Vishwaroopam is being shown there in theatres in full house. Not that there are no extremists there, but the well- entrenched Left and its feeder organizations can handle them well.

vishwaroopam by ravi on 31 Jan 2013

now Kamal faces his own music. he has put thousands of investors in lurch on his venture on Marudhanayakam and more. Every film he puts every one in an issue. I know many producers like Kalaipuli Dhanu going to hiding for a film which did not do well _ just because of his arrogance. Not one film goes without a controversy. he used to instigate negative propaganda and that his hitting him hard _ no pity

Viswaroopam tangle by Dr.T.Rajendran on 30 Jan 2013

It is not fair on the part of the Govt. to go for an appeal in this case, as the relief granted is after through examination of the case by a learned judge. The apprehension that the film may provoke law and order problem is totally unfounded. On the contrary, law and order problem may be worsened because of the second stay due to the clash between fans and vested interests, which is not a vindication of government's stand. The 144 ban is too technical that it must be used only in a deserving circumstance and using that for this issue is totally unjustified even from legal point of view. Even a Government is not to be allowed to misuse this provision illegally under the guise of protecting law and order of a country. Law department of the state government has to advise concerned authorities properly. When a government misuses its brutal authority, the legislature, judiciary and sections of executives must advise it suitably. Democracy cannot be replaced by mobocracy, as Bernard shaw said

Kamal U are a WORLD CITIZEN. by aruloli on 30 Jan 2013

Being an artist of world acclaim Kamal Hasan need not hesitate to vacate Tamilnadu if the TN rulers willfully target him for petty political reasons. You are a world citizen Mr Kamal Hasan so You can be loved wherever you go. So You need not hesitate to go out of Tamilnadu. Your self exile from Tamilnadu will definitely exert pressure on its rulers as the state will then be viewed as an insecure place for artists and a place that curtails even basic human rights--freedom of speech. The Tamilnadu rulers need such shock to mend their ways. Henceforth they should not poke their nose in to unnecessary issues. So millions of your fans like me understand ur feeling. An artist of your caliber should not doomed by petty politicians. Take this as a chance to widen your Kingdom of art. GO. EXPLORE. YOU HAVE NEW ARCHES OF GLORIES WATING to WELCOME YOU OUTSIDE.

India is secular only in records but not in System! by Sandesh Mysore on 30 Jan 2013

Mr.Ullaganayagan, this is highly ridiculous to know that you are facing problem in our own country where you have huge fan followers! There are politicians to safeguard M.F.Hussain and send him to other country with full security but when we hear that none of the politicians is not even uttering a single word this shows the weakness of our country. Screw the vote bank politics .!..

Kamal - Please understand Ummah by Ganesan on 30 Jan 2013

There is no point in asking why Muslims born in India are offended by portrayal of Muslims in Afghanistan. Muslims think of Ummah. Ummah is not nation centric. So, the thinking is "Muslims" and not "Muslims in Afghanistan". Understanding Ummah helps understanding the behaviour. Muslims should also protest against the burning of thousand year old library containing ancient manuscripts in Timbuktoo in Mali on 1/29 by Al-Qaeda backed militants.

Kamal Bhai by suresh kumar on 30 Jan 2013

Feel sorry for the guy but there are lots of people making films that hurt the sentiments of large populations. These are made to create debate and thus profit from it. If Kamal Haasan looses his house so be it he knew what he was doing.
