A girl kidnapped from Ahmednagar on January 3 and rescued from a brothel in Shirpur in Dhule on January 5 has told Pune police that the Ahmednagar police not only refused to register her complaint but a senior police officer, believed to be additional superintendent of police (SP) Sanjay Barkund, hit her and her fiance with a belt claiming they were trying to register a fake case.

Barkund allegedly used abusive language at a constable from Koregaon Park police station who accompanied the two to Ahmednagar with the case papers on Wednesday, January 9. Ahmednagar police finally registered a case on Thursday. The statements of the girl, her fiance and the constable were registered at Koregaon Park police station on Thursday late evening.

The girl was on Friday admitted to Sassoon Hospital for treatment.

Barkund denied the allegations and told the media that the girl was injured when she was beaten in the Dhule brothel.

The 18-year-old girl from Uttar Pradesh was going to Shirdi temple in a four-wheeler along with her fiance living in Pune on January 3, when they halted at Ahmednagar. The girl was allegedly kidnapped by four unidentified persons including a woman, when her fiance had gone to the washroom around 6.30 pm.

The girl was allegedly dumped at a prostitution den in Dhule and beaten by brothel-keepers when she refused to sleep with customers.

She reportedly sought help from a brothel customer who called up her fiance and informed him about her on January 4. The fiance contacted Pune police through local activists. Pune police informed the Dhule police and the girl was reportedly rescued on January 5.

Shirpur police, however, took no action against the brothel where the girl was allegedly dumped and beaten. On returning to Pune, she filed a complaint with the social security cell against the four alleged kidnappers. The case was registered at Koregaon Park police station on January 8. The case was to be transferred to Ahmednagar police as the kidnapping took place in their jurisdiction.

The girl, her fiance and a constable reached Tofkhana police station in Ahmednagar with the case papers on January 9 but the Ahmednagar police did not register a case. As per their statements, Barkund instead beat the girl and her fiance with a belt and abused the constable.

“Ahmednagar police finally registered a case at Tofkhana police station on January 10. We have taken the statements of the girl, her fiance and the constable and are trying to understand why there was a delay in lodging the complaint. Medical tests of the girl confirmed injuries to her hands. The statements have been sent to the superintendent of Ahmednagar police through our deputy commissioner of police,” said senior inspector Shivaji Kamble of Koregaon Park police station. R D Shinde, SP, Ahmednagar said, “An inquiry has been initiated. We will take action against those found guilty.”

Ahmednagar cops’ Doubts in the case

Ahmednagar police said after the girl was kidnapped from a spot near Big Bazaar, known to be a crowded area, her fiance stayed back at a local lodge without even informing relatives and friends. Police say the girl had given vague statements, raising doubts. But the girl’s fiance says he got extortion calls on his cell phone from the kidnappers. “The kidnappers threatened to harm the girl if he informed anyone. Hoping to get information about the girl, he stayed back in Ahmednagar. The numbers from which the extortion calls were received have been given to police for investigation,” said the fiance’s brother.

Brothel found locked

The brothel in Shirpur, Dhule, where the girl was allegedly dumped after she was kidnapped, was on Friday found locked by local residents. A resident of Shirpur, on the condition of anonymity, said the brothel had been operating for over 20 years but on Friday, a day after Ahmednagar police registered a case, the building was found locked.

CRIMINALS IN UNIFORM, EVERY WHERE IN INDIA, THAT IS WHY WE NEED POLICE REFORMS IMMEDIATELY!!! by Khairnar on 12 Jan 2013

Indian Police to be trained for good behaviors or else, people will have no other option to boycott all police men in uniform as their language, behavior and arrogance, brutality are very famous in India. Baton charges, illegal detention, firings and heinous tortures in custody and in public are the common perception India sees from the Police Forces in India and that is why police men and the people in uniform are getting distanced from the citizen of this country. The training they are getting from the training period is not for protecting the lives and properties of the people and keeping law of the land, but they are getting training on how to beat and torture public and spits bad languages which are uncultured and can not be talked in public or in family. It seems police men have no family or respects for family life and they once get appointment, feels that they are the people above the law. If this attitude is not changing, we don't need this type of police force because under these force, crimes cannot decrease, but increase and police force is here to create more criminals. In short, present Police system is for creating criminals and not aimed at to minimize the crime. That is why, we need Police Reforms immediately and corrupted, criminals who are doing duties in police force should be immediately dismissed and action to be taken against them.

Kidnapped Girl says Ahmad Nagar police hit her by Srinivasan D A on 12 Jan 2013

The Police everywhere in India act high handedly.Assaulting a complainant is a way to escape their responsibility to investigate a crime. They adopt 3rd degree methodes routinely to extract confession from accused. They have not so far been booked for their high handedness be it abusive behaviour, be it assulting common man or foisting false cases. They cease to be public searvents but merceneries of politicians in power. It is high time the police reforms are insisted upon by the general public .In the present case of the victim [who was taken for prostitution] it is highly probable that the police officer is hand in glove with the prostitution racket. This complaint needs a thorough investigation by a high level team.
